I downloaded the demo for Uncharted: Drake last night and I must say I'm impressed with many things about this game and a little disappointed in others. Perhaps it's because it's a demo and not the full game there is just some things missing.
The game starts off with you and some lady travelling in a plane towards an "Uncharted" island in the Pacific Ocean that supposedly houses the gold of Eldorado. The assumption is that this gold is an immense fortune there for the taking. Then the sky lights up with AA fire and your plane is taken down.
This was excellently done. The cinematics were all done in-engine (as is the norm anymore really), and they were very well done. The facial responses to speaking and emotion were very close to those in Heavenly Sword, which is quite possibly the best facial features in a game I've ever seen. The negative was teeth. Every time there was a close up of the characters, the teeth just stood out. They were super white and seemingly large. They just stood out as weird to me.
Now to gameplay. Excellent again. The character motions are fluid and life-like IMO. The animations for jumping over things and hiding behind things to avoid gunfire are excellent and fluid. The controls are also very responsive. It is obvious that a lot of time went into this aspect of the game. I've not played Gears of War, but the taking cover system is what I imagine Gears having, and the Naughty Dog may have just completely borrowed this system from Gears. The main character can also use his fists. And, similar to the Heavenly Swords super moves, the game kind of slows down and isolates you from the rest of the world as you kick the bad guys's ass with your hands. Very cool.
The camera system was well tuned as well. When you hid behind a rock you could see just where you needed to. You can flip shoulders when shooting to get a better perspective, and once I figured out how to flip the vertical axis I was very comfortable with the game.
There were a few really cool things about the game that immediately shot out at me. When you turn corners or look at things at a certain angle, the focus of the game changes. Literally like camera focus. Things far away seem out of focus compared to things closer to you. And, a few times in the game where you look further away, the focus of the foreground goes out. I don't know if anyone else noticed this (maybe I'm crazy), but that was a cool effect. Another effect that is really awesome is also your health bar. As you take on hits the screen goes from full vibrant color to black and white. If you take cover, you slowly recover and then you can go blazing with the guns again.
One effect I think was sorely missing, though, was water interaction with the character. He seemed to move through water like it was a gas. There was no hindrence to him as he moved through it, nor was there any movement of the water in response to him. This is really nitpicky though. It didn't really hurt the gameplay at all, but it stood out in my mind.
I have to admit that some of the platforming elements were a bit frustrating. In one case, I was jumping up and the the main character got stuck in limbo. I got a loop of the jumping sound and the guy was just flipping out in mid-air. It was like the game couldn't decide which animation to play so it got stuck. The game wasn't frozen though. I just paused and said go back to last checkpoint, and went right past the place it got stuck on.
I am so getting this game. It was a lot of fun. It felt like an Indiana Jones movie. This demo was extremely effective. It left me wanting more.
I hope there is a little more story thrown in there somewhere along the way to explain why they want you so bad. And, hopefully even explain why they shot you down.
To me, the game feels like Gears of War meets Tomb Raider. The cover system is a little looser than Gears, but that's not a bad thing. Gunplay is smooth and quick, but I had to adjust the sensitivity because my crosshairs were all over the place. I was kinda annoyed with some of the hit detection because I was damn sure I popped a guy in the face, but it was more like a neck hit and he was still coming after me.
As for the platforming parts, I really liked how they felt. I liked being able to jump at angles to grab onto things, you never had to be straight-on with them. With low obstacles, in most games it's real mechanical how your character will vault over them, this isn't the case here. You can get a nice running jump towards a small platform and Nathan will just land his foot on the edge and pop himself up, it's a nice, fluid touch and captures the way action plays out.
Can't wait to get this on the 19th, it's definitely worth the $60.
I was impressed by it as well. But the thing that impressed me most was just how awkward they made the main character. They really gave it a feel of the average Joe being put into a shitty situation. You can tell the most of this by the way he acted in the cut-scene and by the way he seems to randomly flail his arms about when trying to use his melee moves.
Bhive this was an excellent write up! I didn't really know much about this title to be honest, but the way you described the battle system and cinematics seems like my kind of game.
AAA Title?
I think this is a true must buy to me. All these...
(Drake's : Uncharted, Kane & Lynch, & Ass'Creed)
Check this if you don't believe me.
- damn did the bad guys keep coming!
- i ran out of bullets on more than 1 occasion (which was sorta cool, more "real life")
- when i went under the waterfall, my clothes got wet (now THAT'S next-gen baby)
I agree with absolutely everything you said, except the part about the teeth and the water, that made no sense to me. But yeah, the game is extremely fluid in animation, it plays just like a movie, and the amount of expression on the character's face is amazing. The opening cutscene also had some great voice acting and humorous dialogue. I also love the way he interacts with the enviroment, with the jumping on stuff, it's great.
Now I'm at a crossroads of which game to get, Assasin's Creed or this. I'm probably gonna get this, the story intrigues me, the gameplay is great and becasue Naught Dog f-ing rocks.
Now I can't tell if thats sarcasm, but i noticed that with the waterfall too. When I went into the water, Nate's pants would get wet and when I went into the waterfall, the clothes would get darker. I think thats cool, it's the little things that count.
I want Nathan Drake to be my uncle, and not in the crreepy way.
Yes, I noticed the wet clothes too. It's just a shame that A) the water didn't slow him down at all and C) he didn't make a splash when treading through it.
Also, creepy teeth are creepy.
Graphically, the game looks absolutely beautiful...sunlight streams through the leaves, creating really cool shadows and patches of light; the water looks amazing; and the environments are lush, just as they should be. I also was a bit annoyed with the hit detection...you can take damage while you’re in animations, but your enemies don’t seem to, and the damage isn’t location-specific except if you hit ’em in the face. I tried shooting a guy in the knee, gut, and arm, and I got a small variety of canned animations. Basically, if you hit them anywhere except for the head, it takes three shots to take them down.
I’m almost positive I’m going to pick this up, along with Assassin’s Creed. I just wish I had the time and money for CoD 4: MW as well.
