About Me

I've been gaming since before I got my NES on Apple II's and an old IBM 8088. Never had an Atari or Odyssey. I got an NES for Christmas in the 80s and have been a gaming nut ever since. I love Nintendo's IPs and because of this I've bought every systemm to date (including VB). In addition to every Nintendo system (-Wii), I've also own a Dreamcast, XBOX, 360, and PS3.

A PSWii Owner's Thoughts on His Newly Acquired 360
bhive01 | 12:20 PM on 12.29.2007 29 comments

Well, thanks to Butmac I now have a 360 to go with my PSWii. I guess that puts me into the PSWii60 owners club. The first time ever in my life that I've been able to actually get all of the consoles of whatever generation. I had the NES but not the master system, the SNES but not the Genesis, the N64 and not PS1, the Dreamcast, gamecube and xbox and not the PS2. But now I have them all. The only problem is the time to actually play them. My job is becoming increasingly demanding and there has been a deluge of games to play this fall/winter. I counted them up this morning. I've got about 7 new games now on my shelf that I would like to play and finish as well as at least 4 others that I don't feel I'm finished playing. What a mess. A happy mess, but a mess nonetheless.

Well, I got my refurbed RROD'd 360 from Butmac as you might have read yesterday at about 5 pm. The first thing I noticed was the massive power brick. This thing is actually larger than a standard masonry brick. I can't see how MS could say that this thing is really "smaller" than the PS3 overall. That brick is huge. The PS3 has a built in power supply and it's a little larger because of it.

After I read the directions on how to sync the controller I did that and it just worked. The process is similar on the PS3. It's a little more sketchy to actually sync a Wiimote in my opinion. They just take longer and sometimes they just don't quite sync correctly.

This is when the fun really started... And by fun I mean 2 hours of complete torture. In preparation of receiving my 360 I went ahead and reserved my XBL gamertag (bhive01) on Xbox.com. I was told this was a smart thing to do. Not that I really expected anyone to steal my gamertag, but I supposed it was possible nonetheless. In order to actually use your gamertag that hasn't been used before you have to recover it to your console. This wouldn't have been a problem under normal circumstances but the XBL signup servers were being obliterated last night. I tried for 2 hours straight. Each time typing out all the info required and getting further and further each time. Around 8 pm I finally got it to go.

This brings up a HUGE problem I have with the 360 controller. Many others have spoken of this before. The D-pad on the 360 controller is complete shit. I was having to hit it really hard to get it to move around the onscreen keyboard. I made many mistakes because of it. If the process of typing out the names, email, and passwords had been less difficult this would have been less tedious. As it was, it was an awful experience. Once it went though things were great.

Another HUGE problem I had that I don't have on my PS3 or Wii is that my router doesn't like my 360. If I plug in 360 via ethernet (don't have wireless adapter), it fails to get an IP address. This is despite the fact that I can log into my router (Linksys WRT54GL v1.1 w/ DD-WRT v23 SP1) and watch it give the 360 an IP address. Makes absolutely no sense. I did get it to work by plugging the 360 directly into my cable modem. I'll be updating my firmware shortly to see if that makes any difference. I hope it does. I'd hate to have to buy a new router just because my 360 doesn't like my old one... then again gigabit ethernet would be nice.

UPDATE: I updated my firmware to DD-WRT v24 RC6 and it started working. I DMZ'd the IP of the 360 and everything came up roses.

This isn't just a bitchfest though. I'm sorry if it's turned into one. The router/signup server problem was a big S.N.A.F.U. that MS should really look into. If the PS3 and Wii can connect through my router there is no excuse for the 360 to fail at getting an IP address that my router already assigned it. And, having the signup server problem the week after Christmas is inexcusable in my eyes. A lot of people got 360's for Christmas. MS should have been prepared for the onslaught of signups.

To the good stuff? Other than the controller sync being quick and painless as soon as I got past the signup server issues I got signed in and next thing I know Snaileb sent me a message. I then replied. Then we chatted. Easy as hell and super seamless. I was extremely impressed at how easy this whole thing was. I got a 48 h XBL Gold Trial from D our resident Amazon Deal Guy, and it credited my account. I logged out and back in and I was good to go. I bought Bomberman for FNF 22 and poured myself a beer (or 2). It was all easy and seamless.

I then played the initial training mission of CoD4 and by the time I got to the second level I got a Bomberman invite from Snaileb and DVDDesign. I clicked accept and it quit my game of CoD4 and loaded Bomberman. There was one issue though, it didn't load me directly into the game because it had to update Bomberman first. Once it reloaded it didn't take me to the match, and I didn't know where to look for them so I had to message to get another invite. That worked seemlessly too. All around, I think the dashboard and the chatting and IM'ing are excellent. They just work. This is the functionality that the PS3 is missing. The Wii just plain has shitty online. I can see why 360 people complain so much about the online services of PS3 and Wii. They really have it good with XBL.

I have one more complaint. Noise. You guys were right. When this 360 gets going on a game the fans kick in. When I was just in the dashboard I thought to myself, "Wow, this thing is so quiet, I don't know what everyone was complaining about." I soon found out after 3 rounds of Bomberman. The fan kicked in and I roasted some marshmallows and blew dry my hair between rounds. It's truly loud. The PS3 fan isn't exactly quiet, but it doesn't get much louder than it is when you turn it on. The Wii is the same.

So, in summary.

Pros:
Lots of games
Lots of people to play with (Drunken Bomberman was great, but I ran out of beer)
Easy setup (if the signup server is working)
In game Dashboard/communications
Easy invites and game joins even from other games

Cons:
Loud when running games.

Catastrophic Failures:
Router problems really hurt
Signup Server issues were really bad
Horrible D-pad

nice read. dont touch your 360 fan as if you do get the red they wont help since you modified the fan.

I love my 360 and all (especially since I've had it for two years and not once has it failed one me), but I hate the fact that you have to pay to get a wireless connection going but also have to pay to play online.

I have all three consoles as well, I just bought my PS3 about a month ago. I'm mostly playing single player games one it, I put in Uncharted and Sigma almost everyday, but when it comes to multi player I still stick with my 360.

Live is definitely why I love my 360 more than my PS3 and Wii, like you said it just works. The PSN is improving though, and it's a great service considering it's free. Sony seems to add new features to it every month, I like the fact that they does small updates frequently instead of a huge system shattering seasonal update.

Also, Bombershots was great last night, but I only had 3 beers in my fridge so I was basically the sober guy beating up all the drunk kids.

Cool! I just got one, too!

Honestly, my biggest complaint is trying to type things. I have the feeling I come off as an idiot when screwing around with the headset, so I like to write stuff. Makes me wish there was a motion control pointer. Oh wait...

Other than that, I love this system. Really great.

the dpad sucks but you get used to it. I barely notice it anymore. you also get used to voice messaging. if its really killing you get the text pad, it's only like $20?

I should just get Live just for CoD 4, but UT 3 is pretty much tiding me over in the multi-player department.

@brainderailment: I play a lot a my friends house and we get bad quality voice but then again the PS3 isnt much better and ive heard some horrible PC voice comms, mite just be our current connections cant handle that much info ontop of the game data.

Voice chat is what it is on XBL.

It's far better than the shit from the original Xbox. It's more than acceptable to me on the 360, and I do use it for communication more frequently than I do the phone.

It takes far too long to send text messages on 360 if you don't have the keypad, so just use your headset and send voice messages.

The only thing I miss from the ex-box was the group chat.

From time to time we'd use it for voice chat on games that didn't have it. Mario Kart DS and the like.

Now with the 360 we have to use GRAW2 or H3 for a chat lobby.

I'm trying to find an excuse to have all my consoles on at once.

Congrats on your purchase! Well, so much for more PS3 owners on FNF, I guess. But you’ll still join us for WNW sometimes, right? Assuming I’m not still hung over next Wednesday from Monday night’s festivities, I’ll host a 24-player game of madness in the Fortress’ death pit...

Voice messages, eh? Bah, that’s another thing you can’t do on the PS3. However, balth and I tried out the video (okay, video/audio, technically) chat a while back. He had recently picked up a PlayStation Eye for The Eye of Judgment, while I was only on my Bluetooth headset. The chat worked very, very well, and even though the bitrates dipped when his friend joined in, everything still worked fine. I mean, the audio quality was nothing fantastic, but it wasn’t exactly awful, either — basically, it sounded like we were on the phone.

Re: typing with the controller...at school, I just plug my USB keyboard into the PS3 and use that. I presume you can do the same thing with the 360...or can’t you? Also, you don’t have to buy the ridiculously overpriced MS-branded wireless adapter, right? I was under the impression that you could just use any old USB wireless adapter. I mean, obviously, if you have neither a USB keyboard nor a USB wireless adapter sitting around, you don’t have those options, but I was just curious about the 360’s functionality.

P.S. It’s “lots”, not “lot’s”.

No idea why I typed Lots that way.

Anyway, WNW is still on for sure. Any game that is PS3 exclusive and multiplayer will likely be bought by me. I bought Ass Creed for PS3 as well. After playing around with the 360 controller I'd say I prefer the Dualshock3. I'm inundated with games right now though. I need to dig up for air.

Aw, but doesn’t AC run significantly better on 360? Or did you buy it for PS3 before you got a 360?

I'm inundated with games right now though. I need to dig up for air.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I own 7 PS3 games in all, and if you don’t count Warhawk (because it’s not a game that you can “beat”), I’ve only beaten one out of the remaining six games that I have.

@BrOnXbOmBr21 I dont think any USB wireless adaptor will work but there are some solution like the one for the original Xbox that uses the ethernet port.

Sucks live was fritzy when you signed on I think its being quirky now or at least was for me an hr ago friends list worked in games but dashboard looked like I was signed out something may be going on in MS Land.

I actually had no network issues with my 360 with my old dlink router but had all kinds of issues when I bought an SRX one took lots of tweaking to get open nat with my router. My Wii had all kinds of connectivity issues with the store appears from what research I did the Wii likes to be on a specific channels it maybe router related but once I changed it I had no issues. I really had no issues with the PS3 via wifi had a few via eithernet but never bothered with it, it was probably a bad cable.

Hmm so many thoughts here. Live is awesome. I think the voice chat quality is totally kick ass for being VOiP - like DVD I use it to talk to a friend in Japan and it's amazing.

The power brick is inexcusably large. The wireless adapter is an absolute sham for $100 but I do like mine nonetheless. I've never gotten used to the shitty shitty shitty shitty d-pad. The chatpad is worth getting. Like I said before, if you keep your room below 70 degrees it will help with the fan, atleast it does for me.

I hide the brick behind everything so it doesn'T bother me too much. I'm anal retentive about my wiring, I have to know what everything is and where it's going.

I'll add you in a sec. Guh I really can't wait to get home after break, so I can get up in some WNW again. Between portfolio review and break it's just been impossible.
