Awesome blog! Really got me in the mood for some Rayman. I remember checking the first rayman out at a friends house and it kind of reminded me of Magical quest starring Mickey Mouse for the SNES, which is a great thing. I never got far in the game since it wasn't very well suited for the spontaneous gaming that we had going when I visited him, but I think I would love it now. The 3DS Rayman felt pretty weak so I'm happy that Origings seems to be returning the game towards it's roots. I'll be picking this up and playing it with my brother! Thanks xD
man oh man I checked out the demo and it was so solid. I might try and pick this up from Gamestop on Black Friday but I am poor and there are TOO MANY GAEMZ
Glad to see devs / publishers not afraid to go back to some classic 2D gameplay (I mean other than indie devs). I'd kill for a colorful 2D mario game with personality, unlike the black "new" Super Mario Bros. series.
I had Rayman for the Sega Saturn, as well as Rayman 2 on the N64. The second was good, but you're right, it is completely different tonally from the original.
Unfortunately, my oldest brother sold our Saturn years and years ago. We owned Panzer Dragoon Saga and NiGHts also.

I love Rayman 2 just as much as the original so I'd change 'better' to 'different' but even so, great blog! I really do need to pick up Origins... It looks great!
I've never played any Rayman games, but Origins looks so damn good! It's funny how developers are always trying to push realism in their art direction and end up making some meh-looking stuff, and then the 2-D stuff always looks gorgeous.
Yesssss yes yes you rule hard for writing this. I love reading about this game, and I love that you have the same fond memories of all the same parts of Rayman that I have from when I was a kid. My copy arrives next month, and I can't wait.
I think part of the reason the original looked so good is the decision not to have arms and legs. It allowed them to move the extremities very fluidly without requiring sprites for the limbs. Perhaps it was a technical decision at some point that evolved into an artistic one? It worked very well for them on all fronts, I must say.

@Kaggen: Thanks, Kaggen! I bet you probably would really enjoy the original Rayman today. I played it again about a month before Origins came out, and I'd say it still holds up really well today. Have fun playing Origins with your brother :)
@Primo: Yeah, the demo was fantastic! And I can understand the money issues. Ubisoft may have chosen an unfortunate release date, but I hope it won't affect the sales TOO much in the long run (although it probably will, sadly). Hopefully you'll pick it up someday, though!
@caraleo: Thanks! Hope you have fun with it over the holidays :)
@DimmuJed: Indeed, I would love to see more games like this. An actual new 2D Mario game could be amazing!
@Intercept: I missed out on the Saturn. I actually didn't even know they made Rayman for the Saturn as well. Sorry to hear your brother sold it :/
@LsTr Of SmG: That's a good point. "Different" is a good word to describe Rayman 2. Whether you like it more or not is totally up to you. It's a good game, it's just very different from the original.
@HandsomeBeast: Origins would be a great introduction to the Rayman series, in my opinion. And I completely agree with your thoughts on realism. Oftentimes I'm underwhelmed by realistic graphics, because there's usually something "off" about them, which sort of ruins the realism for me. With 2D or other unrealistic graphics, you're pretty much free to do whatever you want and it usually looks great, and any unnatural things can be written off as stylistic choices.
@knutaf: Oh, very good observation! I never really thought about the effects of Rayman not having limbs, but I totally buy that theory. It also helps to set him apart from other game mascots, as there aren't a whole lot of limbless characters out there.

Having limited lives in the original Rayman kind of ruined it for me. Fuck that game was hard! If I don't score origins for Black Friday I'll definitely get it later in the year.
Also, I challenge your title with Rayman 2. :)

Good blog, I think I'm gonna go out and check out the original Rayman now, and definitely Origins too. I played Rayman 2, and thought it was fun. I really did not like Rayman 3 though.
