About Me
++Good Games is newspeak for 'games worthy of merit and discussion.'

We are a group of gamers that range in age from 25 years to 50 years old that have grown tired of being told that Madden is worth playing or that multiplayer needs to be added to every game in order to justify its existence.

If you like classic games like M.U.L.E., Archon, Jet Set Radio, Ico, Panzer Dragoon Orta, Shadow of the Colossus and the like, ++Good Games may be right up your alley.

Are PSN, XBLA and VC not satisfying our want for a real retro gaming experience
bauhouse | 3:20 PM on 11.22.2009 17 comments

This week, Nintendo announced that Super Mario Kart will be hitting the VC this Monday (tomorrow) for 800 Wii points (yikes). On top of that announcement, the VC should be getting both SSB64 and the SNES version of Pilotwings before the end of the year.

Anyone else feeling like being in one of the finest restaurants in town and getting this as your meal.

For 800 points? Balderdash! I will be taking my business to the local pizza place, my good man!

So, I honestly ask, what here is worthy of being excited about? Sure, not every gamer still has their SNES or N64 and, even if you did, spending 800 points saves a bit of headache when trying to find two controllers, and RF adapter and a power cord. But, all that said, there isn't really much to go bananas over here.

Why? Because we shouldn't be excited until EVERY game that ever was, on every console throughout the history of gaming becomes available.

Sure PSN, I loved Tekken 2, but I'd rather be playing Poy Poy or X-Com UFO Defense.

I know XBLA, that I should love seeing that Sonic 2 is dropping in price this month. Unfortunately, I'd rather be playing Star Control or Return Fire.

VC, I know you are three years late to the party with some of these games, but I'd still rather play Yoshi's Island or Ouf of this World.

While I like the mainstream memories of games like Mario Kart, there are so many other games being swept under the wake of time.

Oh well, maybe Apple will sign a deal with Backbone Entertainment for them to emulate every game that we really want to play because the three major console companies don't seem to get it :(

The problem is that I think you may overestimate the number of people interested in playing retro games that don't already have the original games/consoles. The monetary incentive may not be there for bringing lesser known retro games to current consoles.

Virtual Console's been doing fine for me lately.

I agree with Elsa. The big three console makers only want to bring games that make money for them. But Nintendo, with the VC, has brought many more obscure games to gamers today than one could have ever expected and still suffers form the "no games" moniker.

I've bought my fair-share of retro titles, all ones that I had yet to play or own. At the same time though, there are many great new titles being released that are being overlooked. Critter Crunch, Shatter, Super Acrobatic Rocket-Powered Battle Cars...just to name a few. While it's great that some of the older, more obscure titles are getting a second chance, some of these developers today deserves some attention too.

Also, $8 for Mario Kart is a fair deal. I would be against an updated online version either.

*I wouldn't be against an online version. Big difference there haha.

I hate backbone. They need to learn how to fit things to a 4:3 screen properly.

The only cure for retro gaming is buying the retro games themselves.

Much like CDs and MP3s versus vinyl there's just no real substitute for the old way to play the old goodies.

Well, I'd be very excited if it was all available right from the word "go" on these download services. But, I guess they've got to jerk it about with some strange business model they've set up.

I've been pretty satisfied with VC offerings, save for the lack of online additions. If I could play these games with multiplayer, even if its just "friend to friend", that would be incredibly exciting!

But, 5 bucks to have Super (F**KING!) Dodgeball (!) at a whim, on an actual TV? Yes Please, and Thank You!

To be honest with you, I don't buy retro games. I only have a PS3 and there are very little retro games on PSN, but even if there was, I would much rather prefer an original DLC IP or a remake of a retro game (ie. Bionic Commando). Lets say I did have a Wii, I really dont know what retro games I would want to buy. I never had an interest in Nintendo games and I still have a working Sega genesis with Sonic 2 and Xmen 2, those are the only retro games I can comeback too time to time. You know what I want to see come to PSN. A great top-down airplane shooter, like Raptor. Oh god! I would love it if they remade Raptor for PSN. I would die! God that game was fantastic!

I could say a lot about this topic. I completely agree, of course. I'll admit I've bought a few games on VC (our Wii probably has about a dozen in all), but having emulated these games - having the entire library of NES, SNES, Genesis, whatever - has "jaded" me, I guess?

My main problem isn't the lack of games so much as the prices. I remember buying many an NES game for $2 at yard sales and flea markets, and you get a physical copy that actually has value to me - some wear and tear, maybe a price sticker, maybe it doesn't work that well, but at least you have the pleasure of using it on a genuine console. With VC, I don't even know where my money's going - is Nintendo reaping 70% of the profit? Is the publisher which they arranged a deal with giving the money to the people who actually created these old games, is it fueling future franchise entries? or is it just money in Activision's pocket?

Don't get me wrong, I feel good about having paid for the majority of the MP3s on my computer. I would love to pay money for games to emulate (if I knew who it was going to), but I want it to be done right and at a more reasonable price.

Eight bucks for an SNES ROM, gimme a break!

I don't see why a general-purpose emulator couldn't be made, and games licensed from there. Strikes me as really odd, considering that the games themselves usually take up less than a meg for the really old games.

Fun fact - Ridge Racer 1 on PS1 was 2Mb. :)

I think that with time the digital downloads will sort of figure themselves out. They can't charge too little or they won't be worth the trouble of updating for these modern networks. But they can't charge too much just based on nostalgia either. And with the cost of modern AAA titles, do they really want to throw a bunch of money into niche games that may or may not sell well enough to make back the investment?

I dunno, I haven't been that bothered by what's been offered thus far, but I also own most of those old games I want on their original consoles anyway.

I bought a shit tons of VC, because I no longer own a SNES, and N64, but I still wanted to play the games. I'm satisfied, they brought everything I ever wanted. It's a small price to me.

For PSN, I play ps1 classics on my psp, not my ps3, they looks HORRIBLE on my tv. Scale down the screen, and it's fabulous. I'm patient with the releases. And 6$ for RE2 is win.

For xbla, Banjo *drools*. There's a lot of offering.

@themizarkshow:
I think they'll sort themselves out in time, too, but what exactly does Nintendo have to do to "update" these games? I could understand if they added an interface for network play, or ANYTHING AT ALL, but as far as I can tell they're just ROMs. Just emulated ROMs. They don't have to do squat, just secure licenses for them.

>> "And god forbid you use an emulator on your compy. "
@ brainderailment:
What's the big deal? Using a Playstation 3 controller to emulate games is bad-fucking-ass. :D

Truthfully, I'd just like to see a massive compilation disc released for $60 that has the full library of jams from particular franchises.

Fatal Fury Battle Archives 1 & 2 on the same DVD, with Mark Of The Wolves, thank you very fucking much. That, I'd buy.

All of the previous Street Fighter titles on one disc. Now.

All of the old Mario Games on one disc for the Wii.

All of the old Final Fantasy games (1-6) on a disc. Now.

See, it makes sense already.
