About Me
Anything PS3, PS2, Old-school Mac (Dark Castle FTW).

My name is Mark, and I work in finance.

I am a nerdcore individual, and have done pretty much everything I've ever wanted to do in life. I've owned a comic shop, written for GamePro (one article w00t), traveled the world, played a couple CCGs professionally (and actually made money at it), owned 3 other businesses, romanced the most beautiful women and done it all with friends.

I have a blog over at http://www.gamersledge.com/wordpress where all the friends I pick up over the years like Katamari Damarcy hang out and we discuss nerdgasm things. Always looking for interesting people to join us.

There's a bit left on the old to-do list, but I'm pretty happy at my current job because I'm helping people.

I'd call myself a hardcore gamer; I started with el pong, although I was pretty young when it came out. From there I got a 'tennis' game (i don't think they actually had another name), my folks got me an Intellivision for Christmas and that was it; it was all over. I knew I could never get enough. (I get bonus points from all my friends because I still carry a He-Man intellivision keypad cover given to me by a great friend, in my wallet. The cover, not the friend.)

From there, my folks moved to the Ozarks, in the middle of BFE and Nowhere. I learned about the NES and eventually started stealing games from Wal Mart and Toys R Us, back before they had learned. Eventually I got caught stealing em at a video store, and I never did it again. But I bought a SNES from Wal-Mart my sophomore year in high school. Final Fantasy II made me an addict to RPGs. I returned my SNES to wal-mart in its original box and styrofoam my junior year of college. Because I had the receipt, original box and all styrofoam/equip, they gave me full price LOLz. I used that to buy a PSOne. It was that system that really drew me in and Final Fantasy VII and VIII and the original Persona destroyed any chance of me ever losing the RPG bug. I had a friend from Brazil while I was in college, and he was independently wealthy. Every week we would go and buy a SNES game or computer game and play it together and beat it. We were both great at fighters as well, so in my sophomore year I started doing the competitive circuit around KC, and always walked away with money. I've given up fighters mostly now; Tekken, VF, SC, SNK vs. Capcom2.. I play them for fun now; I don't have the time/energy to try to always win anymore... I won't forget the first time I walked into a Japanese arcade... I got 20-hit juggled with Cervantes. I cleaned up on SNK v. Capcom tho, and Virtua Fighter. I fared on tekken as I did on SC LOL.

Anyways, after college I started travelling for work, and was bringing in big bucks as I was gone all week/every week. I got a DC and every game/peripheral made for the system, in fours. I had a projector that I used for work, and when I was home 1-2 days a week, I'd throw parties like Mario Party as a drinking game, or Bushido Blade while drunk. It was great stuff. I picked up 5 ps2s on launch day, and let my friends buy them from me for cost. I got 2 ps3s on launch day, but 1 got cancelled, so the friend I had promised the other two let me get it. I was afraid I was going to be shot/mugged on the way out to the car with it. But it was awesome.

I am a Rhymes with Bony fanboi through and through, but that doesn't mean I can't appreciate Xbox or Nintendo.

I did a 50-episode podcast on videogame news/reviews at my website http://www.gamersledge.com/rssfeed.xml

I think it was hellafun and good, but scheduling conflicts with my partner and I led to its ultimate demise.

I produced that podcast, and was putting like 4-5 hours a day into it. It was too much with work; I'm beginning to think that a roundtable format with no sfx is a much better idea LOL.

Anyways, my gamertag on the PS3 is balth feel free to add me if you want to play some warhawk or super puzzle fighter hd turbo remix alpha hyper king kamehameha spirit bomb genshiryoku shin reppu shao koken II.

The only thing that really sucks about having moved back to the 'Zarks is that there are not really any educated nerdcore type people here. I have no friends my age here, so online gaming is pretty important to me.

RPGs; Persona 3, Every Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest VIII, Chrono Trigger, Chrono Cross, Elder Scrolls Oblivion, R:FOM, Warhawk, White Knight Story when it comes out.

LBP Delay is Complete and Utter B|_|115417
balth | 3:11 PM on 10.17.2008 30 comments

Elsewhere on the site, you'll find a very nice and well-thought post on why we shouldn't be upset about the LBP release.

That's not what you're going to get here.

You're going to get angry typing, from someone who was affected.

No snippy your mom jokes today, no cute pictures.

Simply unadulterated bile.

There's three parts to my problem: one personal, one theological and one methodical.

First one: Personal.

I took vacation for the launch date once it was solidified. A friend in the Air Force, who is about to deploy, did the same. We coordinated so we could play together. Now, neither of us have a game, nor can play together. Fuck you, Sony. You're 'we're sorry if anyone was inconvenienced' doesn't cut it.

Most of my anger comes from WHY it was delayed, number Two: Theological.

Sony reports that the game was delayed due to words in the Quran being sung in one of the background tracks. Sony is pulling the entire game to not offend anyone.

Resistance: Fall of Man sure as hell wasn't pulled.

Did anyone else notice that the first DLC for LBP (a preorder from GameStop) is to promote a game about KILLING GODS and RELIGIONS?

Does noone else see the hypocracy? I'm not saying it's any one religion's fault, and I'm not saying people can't be offended. What I'm saying is that

Third: Methodical

Sony, you have shown for the umpteenth millionth time what jackasses you truly are. I don't know WHO in their right mind makes your decisions, but they must be batshit crazy.

So let me get this straight. The physical copies are in the stores already. The patch to remove the song or turn it on/off is already done, so instead of releasing the game (which has garnered worldwide attention and is going to make you a shitton of money), you decide to delay it and recall it and attempt to reship it to stores within a week.

What.

The.

Fuck.

Institute a return policy, where anyone who DOESN'T have online can return the disc and get it swapped for the new 'sans song disc' with your heartfelt apologies if they were offended.

DO NOT FUCK YOUR USERBASE.

God, what does it take to get you people to make fucking decisions that make fucking sense?

MORONS.

that is not all, but it's all I'm putting for now before I get a stroke.

By the way, the nice post can be found here.

I do recommend reading it, as well. Even tho I disagree about remaining uncaring.

Also, y0j1mb0 correct me if I'm wrong, but I think Sony is 2 for 2 now, yes?

Nice, no really unlike QWERTY'S blog, your language was thought out, and directed at the sources it needs to be directed at, this is sony's fault, no one elses

Really? The Church of England wasn't offended they used a Cathedral? Sony did NOT pull all copies of Resistance, nor even make a patch to remove the level/church!

How exactly is it different? A religious group got offended, yet Sony did nothing.

Remo, are you implying that noone takes them seriously because the Church of England doesn't bomb/suicide bomb anyone? Perhaps that's part of what I'm angry about.

What most irritating is that what has even been deemed by Muslims to be an extremist minority have dictated the results to the majority.

If this is how Sony is going to start reacting, I'm starting to wish that I got an XB360 instead.

This isn't the same as offending the Church of England. I live in Middlesex County NJ, and we've got one of the highest muslim populations in America. These people go nuts when you offend their religion. Hell, they're still trying to ban dressing up for Halloween over here.

Some of them are reasonable people, but many are not.

I begining to think that the whole church of england thing is the reason behind the delay. Sony wanted to avoid another hassle like they got with the COE and decided to try to simply nib the problem in the bud. Unfortunately they did so in a confusing and unnecessarily complicated way, which seems to be their way of handling things these days.

Glad you avoided being racist, though you have a typo with "Quran" :)

Keep being not-racist.

Yeah this makes no sense to me. All the whining is just making non-Muslims have even less respect for Islam. If you're going to be offended by everything don't move to a country with freedom of speech.

And even if sony wanted to cave in they could have just followed the original guys suggestion and just patched the game. I don't think MS would have handled it any better though, companies are getting pretty spineless nowadays.

I've been trying to find somewhere selling it early before it gets pulled. I've checked all the stores like K-mart with employees that don't read good around here but no luck yet.

This is the part I don't get. WHY would they do this to their fanbase (recalling) instead of what I proposed above... makes so much more sense than what they are doing, regardless if their Batshit crazy, EDS, or not. They get the apology IN ADVANCE before the game release, along with a way to redeem for a non-offending version for those that are sensitive.

If we lived in a place where freedom of religion wasn't a choice, I'd totally understand this. But we do. If you don't like something, don't play it/watch it/listen to it/read it.

It's minority dictating to majority.

And I call bullshit!

You actually took vacation to play LBP. Seriously? Are you really complaining about how Sony "inconvenienced" all those people out there like yourself who decided to take vacation to play this game.

I think you need to go into moe detail on this one to explain why it is you felt you had to take vacation to play this game until waiting till you got off work to play it. Was the game really worth taking vacation.

Silverdragon:

Perhaps you didn't fully read what I had wrote. A very good friend of mine who is in the air force and about to deploy to Iraq *and I* coordinated to both take our vacations when LBP released, so we could play it together/unlock everything before he deployed.

I am not saying other people are in my boat, I'm saying no one, including myself should even be in *a* boat. Sony's response is ridiculous. And I'm also saying that them telling us 'Sorry to those we've inconvenienced' is the wrong tack. They should be saying 'We've identified a problem, and could understand if someone was offended. So here's our exchange program, and we apologize for the inconvenience.

Not 'Hey, let's completely dehype our game, inconvenience ALL of our retail outlets and annoy all our consumers.'

You're absolutely right, none of us have *any* reason to be upset. [/endsarcasm]

And FYI, I was in the beta, the game really is worth taking vacation.

I'd hate to say "fucking cry about it, sissy" but yeah, "fucking cry about it, sissy."

Did you really think your point would be taken much more seriously if you include "fuck fuckity fuck fuck" as pronouns to everything? And likewise, as if your small little dimple of the world matters worth a shit? More than likely not. Allow to to elaborate on what you are a twat.

1. Coordinating vacations and timeoff before deployment around a game release? It's a game, things happen, cry about it, bitch boy.

2. Church of England fiasco was pointed towards two things. The first was it was an M Rated game. Meaning only a percentage of the population could play it and hopefully the group that's intelligent although (as proof of the controversy) that isn't always the case. The other issue is CoE was demanding MONEY. Amazing how quickly you can dismiss someone's outrage when they start the conversation with "I am outraged... gimme money."

3. This is an E game... for everyone. Media Molecule and Sony are both trying to push family friendly aspect of it. Given that information, where exactly is background music that cheerfully sings "All in this world will perish" family friendly? As an E rated game, this stuff has to be taken seriously.

4. Agreed, the recall in general was a bad move when Sony could just as easily shipped info stickers to put on the case. But you act like this was a move just to piss off a bunch of gamers. Here's a clue, LBP is going after more than hardcore gamers and it was CONSUMERS in this country that alerted them of the outrage. This was a group of Muslim gamers who found it and sent an email of concern.

But whatever, fuck them towelheads for ruining your gaming night, right?

TBH I honestly think the SOny publicity machine is loving this free attention.

The handling of the BETA keys exploded conversation on the net and got people interested in the game who otherwise would not be.

Now this will affect main stream news outlets giving even more free publicity over the game.

Also by pushing back the release date the shops will have more copies and a world wide simultanus release which is sure to make it enter the guiness book of records for the huge sales it will generate in a single day.

This is going to have more hype than Halo 3 by the end of it all.

The reason why they're not doing it the way you want it is because the Muslims don't just not want the Muslim phrases in their copies, they don't want it in any copies. Otherwise, it's the same as if they just didn't buy the games, but other people bought them freely and were exposed to the content that they are condemning.

I'm not going to say whether that's right or wrong, and I'm certainly not happy with the delay, but I have pointed out all day that the translated lyrics don't fit with the game at all (something about inescapable death), so they shouldn't have been there in the first place.

why should they be able to tell me what to do in my country and when I am not even a muslim?

Do they listen to what offends me about them? off course not, they dont give a toss about us.

BTW I am oon about the crazy hard lined muslims that are offended and complaining simply because they think they can enforce and dictate there views upon the rest of the world and get away with it.

There are plenty of muslims none offended and who integrate in to other cultures and societies with no problem... this is not aimed at them.

These hard line muslims in there home country telling me thousands of miles away in my own country that I can not listen to a certain freely available song whilst playing LBP.

Does that not sound mad to anyone?

If I told them that they could not burn an american flag or burn the bible than would they listen or care? Of course not as it is them same ones that do it causing crap like this to stir unrest.

If they carry on pissing the world off like this they will get nuked within even my life time.

Then we can all go back to normality and stop pouring millions of pounds/dollars in to there region.
