@PREACHER747 Both Alyx & Lara are role models to me. They both bring something very different. Lara is more about the "girls can do it too" shit however :-)
To me, Lara is a hangover from the Girl Power mid-90's. I mean, there's been no progression from that status because Eidos didn't really want anybody to mess with a cash cow.
Lara was as marketable as The Spice Girls; a fun bit of fauz-feminisim that ultimately just wanted to sell something. But this isn't the 90's anymore and people want more. Of course, the irony is that Eidos actually marketed Urban Chaos solely around the strength of it's female protagonist, Darci Stern. But nobody bought the game because nobody took an interest in a character with a personality beyond making her grunt if she hit the wall.
Gamers stunted the growth of decent female protagonists. It's our fault in the end and we only really want them now because of the sucessful games like Half Life 2.
WE SHOULD ALL BE ASHAMED. Then play ping-pong.

Great video, and it was nice to see you not fangirl out... too much. ;)
tbh I somewhat like Lara. She is smart, tough, can most definitely take care of herself and really knows her shit. My only beef with her is that she's a massive douche. I know a lot of male characters are as well, but they're not being called role models.
I do see one's point however in an industry where there are few female role models (and arguably few male ones...), that it's acceptable to look up to one with really only one real flaw... as big as it may be. Although I've never played the first few Tomb Raiders, and iirc she's actually not a douche at all until AoD/Legend so this whole point may be moot.
I still think people should look up to Cate Archer more, if at least because she's an amazing character and her games are criminally under appreciated.

@bluexy: It's not that I don't understand the value of exaggeration for the sake of making a point, but the idea that female characters MUST be role models is a pervasive idea that always bothers me. Whether you intended it or not, that's what it sounded like.
I think a lot of men don't like Lara because she's threatening-- it's like she's rubbing her "I don't need a man" attitude in everyone's face. Women tend not to interpret her that way.

Sort of late to the party. >_>
@Preacher747
I think the gap is what Elsa was talking about. Even most guys trying to defend and promote female role models approach the subject from an exclusively male perspective.
Guys tend to automatically assume that women being sexy degrades them because when they see sexy women they think guilty thoughts. What they want from the sexy woman is something they don't respect or understand. Personally I think that sort of perspective degrades women more by implying women can only be respected by earning that respect within guidelines that make men feel unthreatened by female sexual power.
