Outside Views & Girl Gamers - a rant
atheistium | 7:38 PM on 02.29.2008 65 comments

So check out this video, yeah it's Aktrez. Now before I go into my rant I just want to say, yeah I agree with a lot of what she says. However it's not as easy as "hey enougth of that". Check it out, I know it's long but some good points are raised. This is just a rant, don't take it too seriously, it's very random and badly written.

While some of the video goes off of topic, the majority sits with the topic of "How the outside World Views the gamer community" and what we can do to really encourage more gamers. While not everyone experiences abuse and problems within the gamer community, I sure have and I've delt some. 'It's just the way things are'. So do gamers will want this community, this 'internet hate machine' which makes or breaks people?

Destructoid is a great example of how gamer communities work and why I love it here. We don't take crap from idiots (unless they are funny) and we tend to widdle out those who just wouldn't suit Destructoid. We've all gone into intro threads and told them to not suck and proceed to spam said thread until they leave. Even I attack most females who feel the need to be a fucking whore on Destructoid and I am sure people are annoyed with how I act.

So I'll explain myself - all the decent regular female users we have on dtoid today haven't had hassle from me. Why? Because we all can tell who's going to be a whore and who's not. Who's going to be fucking useless and who's going to post shit we wanna read. I don't want Destructoid going back to the "hey guys i took a nap today" phase and it turn into a 7 page topic of guys masturbating over the fact some girl slept! I want Destructoid's female user base to be GAMERS! To love gaming! To be fucking intelligent and know what they are on about. I want male gamers to respect female gamers which is something that is still not happening on the grand scale, though is happening here.

A lot of female gamers I know ask how I got 'respect' from the gaming community. Which is weird... I don't really have the 'respectz' people seem to think, I don't get billions of pms and emails a day telling me how cool I am (sad face) but you know what... who cares!? I don't need that. Which is why *most* people don't think I'm an idiot. Also because I'm a bitch. Yes, I am a bitch. I just fucking say how I feel which sometimes is good and sometimes is not. I think every now and then "man.. i shouldn't of said that" because I would probably be more in touch with a lot of other female gamers & male gamers as I am sure many feel threatened by the way I am. I also feel bad that I've driven people away from Destructoid but you know... sometimes people don't belong. Sometimes you gotta say some shit and sometimes they just gotta gtfo.

While Aktrez brings up a good point about how slandering and such destroys peoples love of the game, it happens in all different types of communities. Like say football. I am not a fan of football. However a good 90% of England are OBSESSED with football. When people ask me what team do I support (a very every day question here) and my reply is "I'm not really into football", I get cast out of plenty of conversations. Coming online for the first time I am very sure many don't know the rules of the internet but we all as veteran users expect them too and ridicule those who don't. Fashion magazines making girls like me feel like shit and other girls starve themselves for that size zero. So many different examples, it's just we see it as gamers in our community. While I enjoy smack talk every now and then, being screamed at by idiots 13 year olds isn't fun. (thank you COD4 quick mute button).

One thing I really doesn't agree with however is her point about 'if a girl posts pictures of herself naked with controllers, it doesn't effect girl gamers as a whole' - it does. Sadly. While normal female gamers are online playing their games, attention whores spend their days telling us about the games they like instead of playing them, posting photos of themselves constantly, the naked controller one is just another sad thing we have to deal with. Sure lots of guys like it, but this isn't a male dominated hobby any more. So why are there not hundreds of MEN posing half naked with controllers.

BECAUSE ITS NOT ABOUT THAT! There are communities for it, and I don't want to be part of a community where people feel the need to post whore pictures of themselves. Because of these girls, guys thing girls don't game as much as they state they do and ends up with the age old "girls suck". You know what? Maybe those girls would be better if they fucking actually played the game more then 10 mins! I get better challenges from guys not because guys are better but because more guys dedicate their time to the game rather than girls who just talk about it. We gas too much and that is why we are 'not as good'. People who play with me in COD4 know I'm not the best, but I am an asset to any team I join as I know I don't suck.

"Who cares about someone who's never picked a game up before. That doesn't make them not a gamer" - urm... yes it does? Sorry Aktrez, I like you and all but I did lol ;-)

So yeah, uhh I should really stfu now but all that said, will trash talk end? I donno, lul. Agree or disagree with my points, try to keep the comments a little under control ;-)

I freaking adore you and absolutely agree with your entire rant. It's hard for genuine girl gamers to get respect because for every 1 there are 5 whores who overshadow you. I hate the term girl gamer anyhow, everyones a gamer despite gender.

It's really stupid about the whole "girl gamerz don't exist or suck" thing, it's a whole new level of status quo.

Also, you're right on complaining about the whole bitch-thing-posting-like-if-it-was-LJ thing.

That, and the person who introduced me to gaming was a girl, haha!

I usually equate the "pfft, girls can't play games" males with the "tee hee, I deserve attention because I have boobies and like, totally love Pac-man!" females. They're both examples of retards I choose to ignore. I'm also certain you could kick my ass in COD4.

Lauren ftw. Everything you said was true; Like, when I played COD with you I didnt feel the need to be all 'LOL MY HUGE E-PEEN' because you're just another person playing the game. Nothing special, and you realize that. I cant play around people that i dont know; makes me uncomfortable. When I'm playing with DToid though I'm fine.

TL;DR

I sucked Laurens cock on COD4.

Perhaps "Girl gamers," Black gamers," Gay gamers," and the ever popular "Casual gamers" could all get together and march down the street in Selma, Alabama to earn the right to be just regular people enjoying a hobby that doesn't at all need to include racial or gender monikers for inclusion.

That plan sounds a lot easier than ignoring the petty arguments life produces and simply doing the things you like to do. Just a thought.

In any community great personalities tower over the mediocre. Which is why I'm here reading this post and watching this video.

Question though, how far is this gamers need to game nicer deal going to go? My mind is a bit hazy at times, but isn't GEN the place where about a month ago one of the editors posted some risque pictures of herself ala some guitar hero motif, and when not so mean but standard questioning of the relevance got added as comments from "girl gamers" those comments were removed, leaving only the standard, "gee you're hot!" jazz?

I could be wrong, let me know...

About a week ago, most of the women going for the G4 contest were fighting with each other and some of it got nasty. Last week Jessica from All Games and I had a discussion about what was going on. My theory is that because tech, gaming, and other geeky pursuits tend to be male dominated, some females take the position or idea that "there can be only one". I see this mostly in the tech field (because I work in IT) and gaming. The idea is to be "one known female gamer", or the "one known female gaming clan", or "one female gaming site", and to me that is complete bullshit.

Yes, I run a website that is geared towards showcasing what female gamers think about games. But I also visit other gaming sites like Destructoid and encourage people to check out other voices in gaming, like N'Gai or Leigh.

My day job is at a Cancer Research Inst. Watching people get treated for an awful disease puts shit into perspective. Basically it all comes down to what atheistium stated. Just play. Gender, race, location, all these things add to an interesting perspective on games but isolated, they don't make anyone more or less special.

But yeah, this is a good argument. All gamers deserve a certain amount of respect, and should give respect online. It's always much more satisfying hearing "good game good game"(why I love Lone Wolves in Halo 3) then having screaming bitches squeaking & swearing at you for whatever reason.

Also, Abracadabra.

Here's the problem I have: people immediately identifying themselves as a girl first, and secondly as a gamer. That's not the way it works here, I don't give a shit what you have below the belt, I care about what you've got on top of your shoulders, I want to know if you're an intelligent person who can contribute to the gaming community, not whether you're an innie or an outie.

Gender identity should be a secondary concern on a medium which I would like to think of as purely intellectual, why yell "I'M A GIRL!!!!!!11" or "I'M A DUDE YEAH!!!!!!" when you can just let it come up normally in the course of conversation?

I mean, do you really want your Gender to be taken into consideration for everything you say? I don't.
We're people.
We're gamers.

I was really surprised by the amount of women who are geniunely gamers that were on the site when I signed up, and I'm more and more impressed with their awesomeness every day. Seeing your posts, and hearing Collette on RFGO, and seeing the shit that VG built all made me super jealous of your amazing talents, and then struck me with a great feeling of respect for you guys. It just that I know that because you were born a girl you've had to deal with that whole "I'm a nerd, you have boobs, let's have sex" thing that happens a lot when you get a large amount of gamers together on the internet. And at the very least that has got to be annoying.

So, it is with much respect and adoration that I say thank you for not sucking. Great Yob!

damn.. how did you know about my fetish?... *fap*fap*fap*

Anyways, it's true. The thing about girl gamers... not my fetish...

The intarwebz can be a terrible place. Mob rule, Anonymity, a lack of caring, all of these and more cause people to do stupid shit on the internet and feel good about it. Not to mention the instant a person mentions they're female on a game, a million internet dongs covered in nerd-dirt stand at attention. Fortunately in this day and age, it's becoming much more common to meet gamers that are female, and fortunately there are people who think rationally (*gasp*) and understand that just because a girl plays a video game doesn't mean she's going to jump your bones when she sees your epic gear... seriously, no innuendo intended on that last one.

I've met girls that can whup me in CoD, mario kart, smash brothers, and nearly every game I've ever played. The most emasculating thing is to get beaten at MvC 2 by a cute asian girl half your size who giggles after giving you a proper ass ramming, but that's cool, I'm happy to be a part of a place where anyone can play, and anyone can enjoy themselves, because seriously, isn't that what games are... supposed to be about...?

Anyways, great rant, I can definitely see where you are coming from, and agree with pretty much everything here... it just makes sense.

This is a huge problem I have. It makes the rest of us look bad. They don't come off as intelligent or even genuine gamers (even if they are). It only makes them look like attention whores.

I commend Destructoid for being one of the better communities in terms of maturity and being welcoming for others. This is also one of the few places on where the women have strong opinions and have intelligent things to say.

I've met Aktrez a few times and I know how passionate she about this whole thing, but I think she's being a little idealistic. Not because I think her ideas are bad but they won't necessarily work in practice, for the exact quote above. Does that make sense? I'm kind of tired.

I really really really wish girl gamers were more like yourself Lauren. They actually play the games instead of just talking about how they "like videogames."

I really think it's the title of gamer just being given out too casually. One must really earn that title. Most of these "girl gamers" out there are shams and quite frankly can't even walk a straight line in Halo.

Honestly I really think I would marry the first girl that could beat me in Smash Bros Brawl.

Also, "We gas too much and that is why we are 'not as good'."

@EternalDarkWing OH DANG :O! I wrote that badz!

@J4RMZ I did say it was a random rant :p Girl gamers is the only thing I can understand seeing as I'm female. I don't want to go on a gay gamer rant because I wouldn't understand how it all works as I am not gay.

@doc love Regarding that post on GEN, I wasn't a fan. I help out tech wise with that site so I don't get input on posts. I wasn't a fan however and still am not of that person in question. However I've never talked to her so maybe she's nice. *shrugs*

@gamingangel And that competition set off a lot of things. Girls will be bitchy, it's in our nature. Some girls aren't, some girls are. Most of the girls in the comp were. OH well xD

@Dan CiTi You shouldn't walk a straight line or you will get sniped D:<

@Techno Mage Agreed. I have personally stated out my gender because dtoid people ask for a fucking biography when you join and when I entered ventrillo it became very clear ahah. However there is no need to stick a photo of your tits in that bio posts too you know :-) I am glad you just want GAMERS male or female or trans or whatever :D /hi5

@SourGr8pes While I am also not a fan of segregation, girl centred websites usually have a men allowed policy. I recently got access to XBOX's official gamerchiX forums and the posts in there are very normal posts about things. I am sure girls just feel more relaxed around other girls and visa versa. Personally growing up I was surrounded by computer geeks (ie men) but right now my best friend is a girl and even though she is a bit tom boyish we can still talk about vagina's and boobies! Sometimes it's hard to do that with men, which is why girls go to the toilets together LOL

@The Incredible Edible Egg GTFO

@naia-the-gamer while I have only met Aktrez once, I speak to her pretty frequently via email. She's a lovely girl and certainly not hardcore but she games and she knows a lot of stuff. She's in the public eye because she is that type of person. She likes attention but isn't too much of a whore about it if you get what I mean. It's classy. She want to do TV and Acting so that is where it draws from.

@Tino /hi5, gas = talking. Sorry much be a British thing.

@RavaOni I did state I was a bitch twice and that this post was ranting. Why would i need to mention crash of the 80's! lol

I remember being stupefied when you mentioned that people killed themselves for you in CoD 4 just because you were a girl. I’m not stupid. I know not everyone will change. That being said, if I can start a flow of positive thinking and get people really taking a good look at how they act, even if it’s only one or two, then I have done something good.

If you shoot for the highest goals, you'll at least land somewhere better than where you are now. That's my goal with this! Just get people talking and thinking. I think I've begun to accomplish the first.

Wish there was an edit button.

Let me also elaborate on my feelings about girls posing with controllers since I apparently infuriated Tiff.

Honestly, girls who pose naked really don't affect us at all. That's like saying girls who pose in Playboy make it harder to be a girl every day. It's stupid people who believe that ALL girl gamers must act like that are the issue and that really isn't the majority of people. MOST people realize we all have our own lives and choices. So, if a girl chooses to show her body off for attention or because she is proud.. it doesn't affect me. I might not, personally, like it but, it's not really my place to judge. If someone asks me to do it, or expects that of me... I just politely tell them that's not my bag. End of story.

We can't judge people for their choices. That's my point. We are all individual PEOPLE... regardless of the hobby we choose to participate in. We don't tell people what to do, how to market themselves or hold them to this "representation of gender" standard in real life. Why do it in gaming?

Again, just my opinion on things and hoping to open up peoples minds to a different outlook on things. That's all.

@Aktrez,

Whilst we are all individuals, a human habit is to group people together, hence why female gamers are refered to with the term "Girl Gamers" so if one person does something demeaning to that particular group, it affects the entire group in some way.

It happens in all walks of life, people see "Pop Princesses" as cheap sluts who are likely to go off the rails because of people like Britney Spears etc etc

Yes it is wrong, but its human nature and I don't think anything is going to change that, its not just a problem that exists in the gaming community, its a problem that exists within society as a whole.

OH, just re-reading a couple of comments here.

@DocLov. That was one of our first "controversial" posts that one of our writers put up. It was A) labelled wrong and B)put up without being looked at first. That being said, once it was placed in the right category, it negated the issue. That was not a video game post... it was a cosplay of Raychul in her character for Guitar Hero. Putting under Video Games was not appropriate and I agree out of place.

The comments that were thrown back and forth were not seen by everyone. They apparently did get very nasty very quick and were deleted by Raychul herself. Although none of us saw this altercation (I was on a flight to FL) I trust Raychul's judgment on this.

All being said, don't judge an entire site by how you view one writer or post. :)

@ RivaOni But you don't hear anyone else upset about it aside from girls in this community. It makes us look so bad that there are constantly girls posting blogs about attention whores and how we hate them so and then girls who post pictures fighting back that they aren't.

At the end of the day - WHO CARES!? I'm sick of seeing rants about how much we hate this and hate that. I mean.. honestly that's really my point. Why can't we, as an upcoming community, rise above all of that and be one of the first to make a change. Why settle for "it's the way it is.. deal" and why not at least attempt to change for the better?

Sorry, it's late and I"m on a sugar high from a candy apple right now.

I'm not saying that I disagree with you, something does need to change but nothing is going to change within a community thats not exactly respected in the wider scale of things, we're the geeks, the cast-offs, the ones that don't fit into what society deems normal and we never have done, even before videogames geeks were down-trodden and are still like that, look at the Sitcom "The Big Bang Theory", I know people like that, so I laugh because I see them, but you're average person would laugh in a tone more resembling "lol, nerds are sad".

We are also seen as immature as is the medium that we love, and I personally feel that that is something that needs to be tackled before we can even make a dent on how people see women in games.

The problem also is that we have a society heavily influenced by peoples looks, the girl gamers posing with their breats covered by a joypad (my fiance says she'd need 2 PS3's to cover hers if she was that way inclined, but shes not) do bring a certain type of attention to female gamers, look at what happens when a female gamer goes on line, my missus has had people kick her out of games of PGR before because shes female, whilst others have let her win, both of which really annoyed her.

Obviously a majority do have a problem with this kind of thing, otherwise you wouldn't see so many blogs posted by female and male gamers or entire websites of female gamers complaining about it as they feel it does detract from their and they're communities respectability.

Also, forgot to add this, she's been asked for pics to be taken whilst on Live using the Vision camera so yes, whilst there are women out their posing in various manners, usually trying to get attention off of geeks, it does cause a problem for other women.

@RivaOni regarding your other half, I've been in those situations as well. Playing COD4 and people killing themselves so I can have their gun when I just prestiged. Men asking for pics of me :/ Men kicking me out of games because im a girl etc. Which is why I moan about it :/ because I just want a fucking decent game. Although I have only myself to blame because I talk and that's a give away that im female... I just like using tactics you know :/

This is ridiculous. I've never read so much and got so little. The Aktrez girl and you are doing nothing more than reinforcing the negative stereotype plastered on female gamers.

"So I'll explain myself - all the decent regular female users we have on dtoid today haven't had hassle from me. Why? Because we all can tell who's going to be a whore and who's not. Who's going to be fucking useless and who's going to post shit we wanna read." Are you kidding? What makes women any different so that you have to judge them before they're accepted into the community? I have chlamydia, does that mean every time someone with chlamydia makes an account and starts posting I have to start filtering their posts to make sure they don't suck?

You are a girl, congratulations. Is that point enough to warrant plastering it in everything you say and do? Is it enough to create these pseudo internet wars based on the fact?

Women who game, pay attention to the latter more than the first. Sure, they're women, and yes, they get different responses from men when they use voicecom in TF2 or COD4. But they don't try and make a persona out of it. They play the games, they partake in communities, and most of the time don't even mention their sex. That's the difference between "Girl Gamers", and "Women who game." Jade Raymond and Kim Swift are Women who game. Aktrez is the latter. Which do you want to be?

I think "Gamer Girls" and the whole silly lifestyle are counter-productive and hopelessly ironic. They are the same as men, except you have a vagina. It does not warrant spawning a movement because of it.

Lauren, if you're not careful, you're going to end up like the girl taking pictures of herself with NES controllers on her tits. Pay attention to things that matter- the games, the community, and the industry. The stupid woman drama that comes with "Girl Gaming" is not worth your, or our time.
