We all get into a game, play it about 70% through and then for some reason.. just stop and never end up finishing. This has only happened to me twice but I am bewildered as to why it's happened in the first place.
So the games in question are
Dark Chronicle (ie Dark Cloud 2) and
Final Fantasy III (DS). Two good games worthy of completion! What went wrong?
Dark Chronicle was getting really good. I had finished all the map's and now I was having to go back to them and find the extra levels hidden under. This just so happened that I got accepted onto the scholarship program for High School in Japan. Not only was I desperately trying to finish the game before I left for the year but also to organise life issues, end a relationship with a guy I truly loved, resolve some old problems, earn some more money from my job and pass my A-Level Exams all at the same time! I never got time to finish DC and I jetted off to Japan for 5 months of confusing TV and social LOL's!
When I got back from Japan however, I was a free lady. No job, no college, nothing to worry about. Perfect gaming time, right? Ideally I wanted to get a job, save up and move out and/or go to university. The latter never happened however when I sat down and got ready to finish off Dark Chronicle it never happened... Well, it started to. I got through 2 levels and then stopped. Obviously I had to update everyone on my arrival back in the UK and I can play DC any time! It just so happened.. I couldn't get back into the game that I had abandoned for so long. Is it only me? I want to complete the game, oh hell I do. However as soon as I turn it on, I just think I could be playing something better! When did my enthusiasm for this game vanish!?
Same story with
Final Fantasy III, I pre-ordered the north American copy! Ensuring I would not have to wait a year until it's arrival in the UK. First time I really got into my DS and I was only playing one other game on it,
Kira Kira Music Hour... a girly pink music rhythm game based on the Pinky Street series. My friend Mike had lent it me and for some reason I wanted to collect all of those cute clothes. So time for FF3 was split in two. I spent a good 13 hour session one time on FF3, my hand was killing!
Then I went to do a gaming event, I took my DS but working 13 hour days makes you just want to drink & sleep after. Also during the event most people just pop onto pictochat and draw penis'. After returning back home I found out I was to move out of my place and find a new one. I had also received my American copy of FF12 so that went number one priority as I don't have an American PS2 but my room mate did. FF3 was put in a box with my DS and then moved off to my new place. Soon after moving in I got my 360 and pretty much left my DS to dust until Pokeman Pearl was unleashed onto the interwebbs!
I am flying to America in the next 2 months so maybe I'll play it on the plane but I really haven't had the energy or passion to get back into the game. But I really don't understand why with two games I have enjoyed from the start, I suddenly can't get back into! Maybe the arrival of social gaming with xbox live has destroyed my ability to get back into older 1 player games. I am playing through Tomb Raider Anniversary now though... I can't explain it!
So what games have you abandoned but wanted to complete?
Im terrible for starting games, and then never finishing them :/
THE END
I never finished Lost Planet. Yucky game.
Prince of Persia: Warrior Within (got lost when I ran to find secret teddy bear weapon)
Alien Hominid
Final Fantasy IV(GBA, lost it but just found it)
Spartan: Total Warrior (got stuck at a tough spot)
Resident Evil X: Code Veronica
Maybe a few more...
And I never got around to finish Time Splitters 3. After the 10th or so death at the endboss, I just said "Aw, screw that!"
Also got a ton of 8 and 16-bit games on a emulator, which I never bothered to finish.
As for games I never got back to; what comes to mind for me is Persona 2 and, ironically enough, Dark Cloud 2.
Persona 2 because this boss was impossible to defeat unless you earned a certain persona, which if I wanted to get would involve me backtracking through the entire dungeon on foot, play for an hour or so to earn the persona, play for another hour or so to level the persona high enough to get the skills you need, and going all the way through the dungeon again. A tad bit a pain in the ass if you ask me.
Dark Cloud 2 because school and other games came around.
There was a period from 2002-2005 where I would buy used games all the time. Atleast one every 2 weeks. I never finished 2/3 of them.
But most notable of the games I quit is probably Metroid Prime. I remember something about backtracking to find keys, and that killed it for me.
I was still trying to figure out how to get to the boss of the Snow Village dungeon. Gay.
i do this all the time, b/c i get a game when i'm almost done with the one i'm playin, and jump ship. i do this with almost every game.
most recent offenses:
gears of war: i'm up to RAAM but never bothered beating him.
okami: i'm really far, really really far (over 85%), but i just never picked it back up.
resident evil 4: always awsome, but alwayas get sidetracked.
legend of zelda. twilight princess: not too far, takes too damn long to get anything done.
I know I know, you don't have to say it. Just go ahead and start throwing the stones.
Overall, I finish every game that I buy at least once even if it's just on "easy", unless it never ends or it's too difficult to get to the end. There are some NES games I never finished, but it wasn't from lack of trying. Battletoads I'm looking at you!
Second one was Golden Sun 2: The Lost Age, thought i've recently played through the first again and started an awesome link game on GS: TLA. My handheld project to finish over the summer before i go back to:
Pokemon Pearl which is the fourth and latest game that i havn't finished. I did all the main story but filling the National Pokedex got tedious so i'm taking a break and will finish that during the summer when GS: TLA is finished and i have my DS hooked up to the interwebz for trade evolutions etc.
The third game i've left unfinished is Twilight Princess. I got upto the Palace of Twilight and then hit January exams so i stopped. Since then i havn't had the energy to go back to it.
Will likely finish it fairly quickly this summer though.
Good example of a game that kept my interest when I was losing it: God of War. Blade of Artemis FTW.
Of the myriad of games I own, from day one in the NES system, i can list maybe 10 that I've actually finished. Among these: God of War 1 & 2 (PS2) Little Mermaid (NES) Super Mario Bros (NES) Super Mario World (SNES) Resident Evil 2 (PS1) ... wait, I can't think of any others.
Dammit.
james bond agent under fire got kinda boring
eternal darkness...that goddamned boss kept beating me. i beat the boss, and lost interest after that.
legend of zelda: twilight princess. yeahh, dunno. i'll finish it. but probably not today. or tomorrow.
I'm with imbeta on this one.
How many games have you finished?
Finished About 40 of the hundreds of games i own, started but not finished about 50 or so games and have bought but never played the other hundred or so games.
Such a waste, so little time.
-Okay promise not to laugh-
Promise...
Donkey Kong on Nintendo 64 was the first game I could never finish. I got to the end part where you had to get 2 gold coin thingies to unlock the end. The second one was in the classic Donkey Kong arcade machine. (the one where your mario and donkey kong flings barrels at you)
No matter how hard I tried I never beat that game EVER! and it still haunts me to this very day.
Sometimes I wish every single developer on that game was shot in the head for putting that in the game 0_o
Yes I know violence won't solve my problems but C'on FFS I hate that game (*bitter tone)
It was weird. I got probably through %85 of RE4 and just randomly stopped one day. Since then my 2nd game disc has disappeared, promptly extinguishing my dreams of conquering one of my favorite games of all time.
Oh well, happens to the best of us, right?
Chrono Trigger. This one i regret alot. I've only ever been able to play it on emulators. I'm hoping it comes out for Virtual Console soon. although, on my Dell Axim x51 i got to the future town and then the big ass boss at the top of the building thing. Got stuck there. The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening. Honestly, I regret not finishing ANY zelda game, so i usually beat all of em even if it means me ending up hating it because i didnt wanna play it and i made myself. I'm actually playing through this game now though, I still have my gameboy color so i picked up a copy. Yeah, I leave alot of games unfinished. when I beat one though i know i'll play the game through at least 7 times :P I'll probably beat ff12 sometime. dont know if it will be soon though :D
What were you playing it on? PS2? PC? Gamecube?
I played it on PC and using the mouse aim cursor mod.
I found it to be one of the best games I've ever played but completing it once was enough for me. I might go back and play it sometime...
1. Halo - The Library was BORING. It was really mindnumbingly dull. Aside from the fact that playing those levels on heroic and legendary are nigh impossible and damn annoying, there are also loads of ways that you can just die randomly; you can fall through the floor, get in the way of those stupid flying lasers, be blown up by those walking bombs (or just run forward, run backward, all the goddamn time), or if you lose your shield, you'll die instantly from those things latching onto your head. I didn't give up; i did eventually complete it, i think i had just lost my patience by the end of that level.
2. Warrior Within - Hard to really say why I stopped playing this, but still more obvious than most games where i simply just stopped playing (Red Faction 1 & 2, XIII, King Kong, Time Splitters 2, Rogue Agent (hey, most of these are on the GC... coninsidence or trend?), Killer 7, Viewtiful Joe and so on). I stopped playing WW after the boss fight with that woman in red, i was about 45% into the game as far as it remember. I think it was taking up to much space on my hard drive, and as much as i wanted to finish it, I could say anything right now and it wouldn't make any difference because no-one's going to read this so to hell with the formula, I like corn sympa-thesis.
I should be answering games I HAVE finished. That's limited to Full Throttle, Halo, Halo 2, One of the Monkey Island games, Gears of War, Unreal 2, Pokemon Blue, Splinter Cell... thats all I can think of for now.
I guess I'm on the road to recovery.
There's no reason to finish Warrior Within. Just play Sands of Time again and pretend it's the sequel.
You keep your corn sympa-thesis away from me.
With Phantasy Stay IV, I was able to play it through the Sega Channel. To my dismay, after a month of playing the game almost non-stop, the God damn channel switched the game roster around, thus ending my quest for completion.
I was so heartbroken over this, it pains me to this day to try and restart a file using a rom.
With Shining Force II, I got over-excted for the new Toejam and Earl, and ended up trading it in along with WWF Raw and High Seas Havoc.
the reason I never finished dark cloud 2 was spheda... spheda ftw.
first game never finished: Night Stalker on the ancient, weird-brown machine called Intellivision (oh how i miss you, 8bit)
More recently i've come to the mystifying problem of never starting games... like the add on for Act of War, i loved AoW, i figure i'll love the expansion.. but i just can't bring myself to install the bugger! (especially since i have c&c 3 freshly unwrapped!)
those racing games that run on endlessly.. need for speed most wanted, i'm looking at you buddy.
gta3 was so much fun wiht things hacked that i couldn't bring myself to finish it, i just wanted to ram 30,000lb taxis into pursuing police and watch them fly!
