On the 23rd of February I was invited to some farm in the middle of Northampton by Ubisoft and those crazy men from Warfighters.eu. Why? To demo Rainbow Six Vegas 2 of course.
While my time with RSV2 was limited to
multiplayer the game looks and feels fantastic. I honestly was not a huge fan of the previous game but it was nice to know that the controls have not dramatically changed so everyone was comfortable and playing around with the variety of new weapons and armour available in the game.
One big change was the interface and the fact they had adopted a rather favourable style of ranking. Most FPS games with a levelling system tend to limit it to the lobby and score board. RSV2 has taken this one step further and included an experience bar to the bottom of your screen. Though something small, I was rather impressed and it saves you so much time having check how much longer you have till your next level.
Maps were beautiful and some capture the flag really showed us how dynamic the areas are and what you can do with them. Everything was so much more tactical than what I was used to and it was a nice change of pace. The character renders were great, though the beta build did not include all the faces and outfitting. I was upset to see the female soldiers had become even uglier than before. I mean, it's not hard to get some pretty ladies in a game right?!
Apart from the game itself we also got to play around with the wonderful people from Warfighters.eu. For those who don't know - Warfighters is a Live-Action gaming event where you experience combat like GRAW and Rainbow Six in ... well.. real life. Kind of like paint balling/air soft but more tactical.
Warfighters is about playing missions, not just skirmishing. Missions present challenges that can change the outcome of nearly every game you take part in. You will have to work as a team in order to overcome each mission objective. This commands solid tactics and slick weapons usage to master. We also mix in some mindless team killing to make the day even more enjoyable.
We had a bit of target practise and then entered the 'Kill House' which is was a little scary. The guys gave us some great advice which I actually started using in game since yesterday and .. well.. it worked well and reminded me of delicious cake. While we couldn't get any photos of inside the kill house,
you can check some from their official site.
I would love to organise a destructoid event at warfighters maybe next year. Stay tuned for that.
