"But your a girl..."
atheistium | 4:05 AM on 11.18.2007 36 comments

The title is actually quoted from a large woman who walked into my store yesterday purchasing 'Cooking Mama' and some Pony or Puppy game for her daughter.

Basically I was talking to James about COD4 and it's epic awesomeness online, he was have problems getting online and generally sorting out a fix.
Pinkie (as I've named this lady) asked what kind of games I play online. I replied with 'shooting games, fighting games etc' and she looked at me blankly and said "But your a girl..."
Oh Gawd, for some reason I didn't really take too much offence. This is the woman who prides herself in spending over £300 each on her spoilt children and stated that I should be into lots of "pink and ribbons" (oh yeah she said that).
However she was the perfect target to get rid of those god awful Girls Guide to Gaming books (those things radiate pink) and I tried to sell it to her.
And that was my random rant :p

Lob a copy of Girls Guide to Gaming into her soccer mum face. That might undo the outrage of such an idiotic and self-inflicting statement.

Oh Gawd, I saw those books while picking up Assassins Creed on Friday, told the dude I normally talk to in Gamestation to bin it ;)

My fiance plays alsorts of games, from Cooking Mama (which shes currently loving) through to Rainbow Six, and I know of many other girls/women who don't result to the stereotype. In fact the only girl I know who fits into the old stereotype of girl gaming is probably my niece, who admittedly only wanted a DS for Nintendogs as the house my sister rents the owners say they can't have a real dog...

Yeah, people usually give me weird looks when I mention that I play video games. It doesn’t even matter that I’m a guy in college — apparently, gaming isn’t a pursuit that’s worthy of my time. Morons.

Getting someone to 'buy girls guide' to gaming is wicked revenge, so did she buy it?

I wonder how opinions will be twenty years from now.

According to everyone I know, I'm too old (31) for videogames.

I just tell them to piss off.

I honestly have a feeling many will still be of the same opinion in 20 years. You have to realize that gaming, while making great strides with females, is still generally a male hobby, specifically young males. Things are slowly but surely changing, but don't expect the overall attitude to change in the next 20 years. After all, my parents will only be 70, meaning that a lot of people in their age range will still be around, telling us games ruin shit and whatnot. It's sad, but that's life. Also, don't hate on the woman, she doesn't know any better. Besides, she sounds like a decent lady, spoiling her kids or whatever. At least she'll buy the games, as I have a few family members that refuse to allow games for their kids or buy anything game related for their nieces or nephews on Bdays or Xmas. So she really ain't that bad, just old fashioned.

Man, I hope you conned that dumb bitch into getting a book with such a stupid premise. I bet she doesn't even let her daughters play with Tonka toys...poor gals.

Btw...I believe that in your title and quote you were meaning to say "you're" (the contraction of you and are) instead of "your". Sorry to go grammar-police on you...but it's a peeve of mine.

Honestly, why all the hate when it comes to old fashioned people? Look at it from their perspective and consider how they were raised, the world they lived in when they were young. I don't get pissed off when people tell me videogames are for kids, I just ignore them. It's their own opinion, so leave them be. Although, I love telling Grandpa "I told you so". He said I would grow out of games by the time I reached 18. He was wrong, god bless him, great man that he is.

Anyway, the woman did no harm really, and you can't blame her for being surprised. Like I said earlier, while many girls are gamers, the industry is still dominated by men, both by physically playing games and in the minds of non-gamers. After all, walk into a GameStop and notice the myriad of shooters and the like, and how can you expect an old man or woman to think girls actually play such things? You're talking about people who still believe a woman belongs in the kitchen and nowhere else. So let's be nice to old people. They're pretty nice themselves. Usually.

You love the pink and the ribbons

and the pink ribbons.

You, you, GIRL you! ;)

I still struggle to believe that people like this exist until I meet them myself. We had a catchphrase that we used to use at work for a long time because we had heard it from so many people in one way or another.

"Do you do dem games, do ya? For that there GameBox?"

*sigh*

Pink and ribbons are nice. But I don't know any moms that are really like that, though some would dismiss gamer girls as nerds.

The problem was not that this lady was stupid or old fashioned (she was buying her kids DS after all) it was the general disbelief that girls cannot play action games or survive with wearing pink ribbons in their pig-tails.
My own mother, who is much older, who I would call old-fashioned would not have made that remark. For all her traditional family values, she is not ignorant.
Which is why people get frustrated at such comments. Ignorance.

Unless you've been locked in a cupboard for the last century there is no excuse why people could still be so ignorant.
