FUCK YES. YES YES YES YES YES.
Peter Berg, actor and director of Friday Night Lights, The Rundown, and The Kingdom, confirmed yesterday that as of this moment, he is in preproduction for the greatest sci-fi story of all time, Dune. Words cannot express how fucking excited I am for this. I just finished the first trilogy last night (Children of Dune has a fantastic ending :D) and the epicness of the books made me realize how shortchanged they have been in the film adaptation department. The 1984 David Lynch version was terrible. The 2000 Sci-Fi Channel version was good, but way too low-budget. The 2003 sequel miniseries was better, but still lacked a real sense of wonder and awe that a series of Dune's caliber should have. If Lord of the Rings can take three massive books and abridge them enough to make three mind-blowing movies, surely someone can make Dune the way it's supposed to be.
When asked about the scale of the new verison, all that Berg would say was "big, big, big." It's about time that a sci-fi universe as intelligent, brilliant, and epic as Dune came to the big screen. I don't want to sit through another
Transformers. D:
Anyway...
God damn, I am so excited about this. This is going to be
awesome.
THE GUY WHO DID THE KINGDOM IS DOING DUNE
OH MY GOD
FUCK YESSSSSSSSSS!!
hopefully itll revive the game series as well, but if I get some tripe movie tie in bullshit from it I'll kill a bitch.
do want. dune rules.
I really hope and pray he has nothing to do with this movie, for it will bear his taint.
A legit, big-budget, well-written adaptation of Dune would be the shit though.
For anyone who hasn't read them, at the very least pick up the first three books. The last three books by Frank Herbert are also great, although unless you're really into the universe I'd say definitely skip the prequel stories by Brian Herbert & Kevin J. Anderson. Hunters of Dune and Sandworms of Dune are a maybe simply because they conclude the story based on Frank Herbert's notes, but nowhere near as good as the originals. Probably best to just read the synopsis on Wikipedia instead. SPOILERS: Fucking everyone gets cloned.
I love the visual design and surrealness of Lynch's version, but dislike it as an adaptation of Dune. The miniseries versions do a better job with the story, but still lack a lot in other areas.
Other great stuff from Frank Herbert include The White Plague and the three stories set in the ConSentiency universe.
And you're right, they've never nailed the ages in the adaptations. Paul is 15, Leto and Ghanima are 9, and Wensicia is YOUNGER than Irulan, dammit!
Dune the Movie..?
Most likely Dung The Movie.
