With all the drama that ensues after nearly every Destructoid review comes a lot of finger-pointing and insults. One of the things I'm starting to see, and I'm sure I'm not the only one, is an "us vs. them" mentality where Dtoiders are accusing those who dare to disagree with said reviews of being sheep, and saying things like "Kotaku is that-a-way", lulz.
Now, this particular discussion is not about the reviews themselves. Instead, I'd like to focus on the question, "who are the real sheep here?" Who are the real sheep, when every time you see a negative comment toward a writer, an opinion, or a review, a dozen Dtoiders flock to the scene of the crime to defend their Toid-brother like a mother bear fiercely protecting her cubs? Why is it that anything and everything is fair game to be mocked or disagreed with...other than Destructoid itself? Suddenly, the cynicism and sense of humor goes out the window when someone has the AUDACITY to criticize something written on the front page. The behavior here recently in comments sections reminds me of the discourse here in the U.S. when the Iraq war was going full steam. For every one or two people who wanted to disagree or maybe voice their opinion a little, there were three or four rednecks ready to say, "You don't like it, commie? MOVE SOMEWHERE ELSE!" In a sense, "Kotaku is that way ->" and "Go to CNet then" has become our "Move to France if you don't like it!" And that saddens me. It is no better to blindly agree with everything a Dtoid writer or editor says than it is to blindly follow anyone. Similarly, someone doesn't need to "GTFO" of Dtoid simply because they don't like a review or article here. Dtoid is special in part because the writers are really just like us. They are gamers like us, they interact with us, they visit our blogs (well, YOUR blogs...heh), and essentially are no better than us...and that's a good thing. Let's not ruin that by putting the writers on a pedestal and being afraid to disagree with anything they say. Also, like it or not, this site is growing. Niero and company WANT it to grow. So should you. The folks who work their asses off to provide us with entertainment and lulz should be rewarded for that effort. The only way that's going to happen is to continue to have new folks check out what Dtoid is all about. And shockingly enough, the mob mentality that has taken over much of the Dtoid flock will be foreign to them. They may just go as far as to criticize or disagree with something related to the site or its writers. And (say it with me), that's okay. Dtoid is all about saying what you think, whether people agree with it or not. So let's take it easy with the ass-kissing, people. The writers don't need it and Dtoid isn't better for it.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!

I completely agree, and I'm a huge Dtoid fanboy. Yeah I'll admit it. If an editor writes something I disagree with, then I comment that I disagree.
But if a bunch of people hop into the site with new accounts to insult an editor's intelligence, sexual prefrences, etc. just because he dissed their new favorite game... OF COURSE Im going to tell them to GTFO my Dtoids.
It wouldnt be a king3vbo comment without some sort of stupid picture:
Am I doin it right? Also, I have to agree with 3vbo. I'm a 'toid fanboy yes, but if someone with their happy "newb" avatar comes on a bashes only on front page articles, they can kindly GTFO mah interwebs.
Of course! Sometimes trolls do say things like, "this site sucks" or make other generally insulting statements about the site as a whole. To that, the only rational response is, "then why the hell are you here, fucker? Get out!"
@ Gamegoblin-
Ice cream sounds good. I probably didn't need to write this post, but I felt like saying it at the time. Now that I have said it, I'm kind of sick of the whole thing. I almost wish Dtoid would do away with reviews altogether, because the bitching about reviews and subsequent bitching *about* bitching is equally annoying and pretty much takes over the site for awhile.
This works right? I don't know why this issue is still being talked about anyways. These things happen everywhere on the interwebs and I believe we all know that the best thing to do is just forget about said things.
@akathatoneguy
I noticed you have a Cubs logo in your xbox360 gamer tag thing. Life must be rough for you *snicker*
I know it's only the internet. I posted a sensible, calmly written opinion on what I see happening here. What exactly is your point?
Glad someone else has a clear head.
Like my mon use to say FUCK'EM
Actually things are pretty good. They made the playoffs last year and many of us think they will again this year. It could be worse. Now the White Sox...they might have a tough year.
Not all who agree with a given point are following anyone else's lead.
>You have encountered an Internet Fight. Command?
agree
>You have become a sheep. The fight is still occurring.
disagree
>You have become a different sheep. The fight is still occurring.
C:\offer nuanced opinion
>tl;dr. The fight is still occurring.

>You have encountered lemonparty.

Overall, reviews are garbage and the only true review is one you can make on your own after playing the game because it is so hard to review a game that you might not be any good at or don't like. Per example saying something is bad because it's hard is not fair and allowing personal opinion into a review is danderious stuff. But in the big picture it is the internet after all, and a Blog must be prepared to be hammered with moronic responses to posts. The real D-Toiders will take the review for what it's worth and the loser dregs will bash it insensitively for no good reason.
I'm guessing the "Kotaku is that way ->" came to be thanks to people complaining about the score only by comparing it to another's site score.
I don't think we all follow mindlessly, I've seen quite a few dtoiders debate about different reviews, the problem comes with people that argue about the score and only the score.
@king3vbo
Loved that image.
Also, it was well written at least so kudos to you.
Its been my observation that the community has put the editors up on a pedestal, they hang on every word, every column, every blog, every goddamn thing they say so when someone dares to question them these select members become angry and spout the crap you discussed.
Yes its the internet, but this is still a forum to post your opinions, having them ignored in favor of idiotic replies telling you to go somewhere else is quite insulting, and this community is not very friendly to new people.
I think think its an insult to tone that he's trying to get a serious discussion started and stupidity is spreading across the posts like wildfire, there's plenty of other blogs for that but they pick this one.
Course I am under the assumption that 90% of the community on this site is worth a damn when clearly they are not, there's so few people here that contribute in great and awesome ways, its nice to see them getting the attention they deserve but its sad to see idiots getting a reputation because they're idiots, you know who you are, no need to name names.
Still, this will keep happening, D-toid is to big, its barely policed and the people that should read this blog won't and will continue to defend their editor of choice like a mother protecting their children.
This isn't to say that new people shouldn't be welcomed, but mindless trolling shouldn't be tolerated, especially here.
Also I don't think the problem is disagreeing with the editors. In fact I completely disagreed with Jim's review of Patapon, for example, but his review was well-written and had good points. I agree to disagree.
The problem is all the people that basically told him he sucked for his points, and there is a nicer way to say that.
"...have new folks check out what Dtoid is all about."
If they check out what it's all about, then they'll know better than to type some stupid shit like "ZOMG JIM U R BRITSH AND GAY AND FATS! FCK YOU! LULZ" and that kind of shit happens all the time. When it does, that's when the destructoid defense force shows up!
The problem is that this behavior has done more damage than good. I used to love the hell out of this place, and then I noticed one day that D-Toid had become just like every other gaming community on the net. It has become a mere shadow of its former glory, having been overrun by trolls and fuck-wit fan-boys, who hide behind the anonymity of the internet and snipe at people just to make themselves feel a little better about themselves. It's sort of depressing.
I expressed this opinion recently in another C-Blog, and was textually raped by several people for it. Granted I didn't exactly elaborate on what my problem with this place was, having simply warned a new member that the community in its current state can eat away at a person if he is caught unawares, but honestly, it was a throw-away comment, borne from the frustration I feel from seeing something I enjoy being innundated by the sort of stupid shit that I came here to escape in the first place. I didn't think I had to elaborate on it. And besides, rather than ask me to do that, they just assumed the worse of me, and incidentally, ended up validating what they thought I was saying in the process. Moreover, they illustrated that you're not allowed to have an opinion, unless it's totally supportive of D-Toid and the community. That's more than a bit fucked up.
One guy decided to give me the benefit of the doubt. I discussed it with him, and he seems to hold an opinion very similar to the one expressed by akathatoneguy, along with everyone who expressed their distaste for this nonsense over the course of the Eternity's Child debacle. It's refreshing to see that not everyone here has his head up his ass. And hey, if enough people draw attention to this problem, then there's hope for the future yet.
