The other day at the local EB games where I work we had someone return Skyrim. I asked the customer if he liked the game or not and his reply was that he beat it already, mind you that he purchased it from me 2 days ago and when I asked him how many side quests did he do his reply was none. None are you fucking kidding me, who the hell buys an Elder Scrolls game and only does the main quest line. And he only got to level 18, fuck when I was level 18 I had only done the first couple quests of the main questline, enough so I could use dragon shouts. So no he didn't join the Stormcloaks or the Empire to fight in the civil war, nor did he join the Champions and become a warewolf and no he didn't get drunk in a bar in Whiterun and wake up on the other side of the map in the shrine of Talos.
The Average Dude Bro Gamer
But no this wasn't the worst thing, the worst thing is that he traided it in for MW3. Now I would have understood if he traided it in for something like Mass Effect where the main quest is longer than a few hours or even for GTA or Saints Row, but for fucking CoD. When I was handing him his copy of the game I told him that I'll be seeing him in 4 hours, his reply was " Na mate it's got multiplayer". I took every ounce of strength in my body not to beat the ever loving crap out of him.
Because of fuck heads like this who arent happy with a massive open world RPG with hundreds of quests but will happily pay for the same game year after year, running around the same small and shitty maps day after day screaming "NOOOOOB" into their headsets; that perfectly fine if not brilliant games like BioShock and Dead Space have rescources taken away from their excellent campaign and instead put towards making some shitty multiplayer for the sequel and inturn make publishers like EA and THQ use online passes because they think that the only thing gamers care about any more is shitty tacked on multiplayer that no one will be on in a few months time because they'll be playing a new game with shitty tacked on multiplayer.
So fuck you dude bro gamers you have ruined this industry.
What do you care if he traded Skyrim from CoD? "Dude Bro" gamers have NOT "ruined this industry". In fact, they have saved it by pouring millions of dollars into games per year and allowing the rest of the industry to thrive so that other developers can have a go at making video games.
I hate this backward, elitist attitude a hell of a lot more than I hate "bro gamers", personally.
I think he's more upset that a person traded in an open world side-quest oriented game, never did any of the side-quest oriented stuff, and traded it in for a super linear set piece title.
tl;dr - "You're doing it wrong"
When I worked there it was out of the ordinary that I would get to talk to someone who wasn't an idiot.
For the strategies that these corporations use to be effective, it relies on the majority of your consumer base to essentially have little value in their money and no common sense to ignore the part of their brain that just wants to constantly indulge in pornography.
A good example is CoD. I hate on a lot of my friends who buy the game every year and are day 1 purchasers of DLC, not because I feel my personal dislike for CoD should be the norm, but because they could get SOOO MUCH MORE out of a CoD if they stopped rewarding companies for essentially selling you fractions of a game you already bought in order to get a more complete experience.
The best quote I've heard from a CoD fan " Theres not too many maps but I'll just wait for the DLC".
But alas we are too far gone now. It's become much easier to put hate on those that oppose these strategies as it's come to the point where they are what's to be expected.
Feel free to check out the Jimquisition about Skyrim proving the industry wrong, as a lot of my feelings are expressed in that.
Also, I rather have to agree that if they guy actually bought the game, and then also bought MW3 new... then he's doing more to support the industry than many other gamers.
Dude, come on! Different tastes! Let's all respect each other.
You should calm down a wee bit.
It's people like you who are ruining this industry, complaining about your fellow gamers and perpetuating the stereotype of selfish assholes who think they're better than other people because they play Game A and Game B sucks.
I would also wager a bet that if you were to take a swing at that guy, he'd kick your ass up and down that shitty store you work in.
It's my first month working there.
And to everyone else it's not that I don't like CoD because I actually do enjoy it or that he didn't like Skyrim. It's more about that he felt that CoD was the better game because it had multiplayer and that this mindset is the reason why so many games have tacked on multiplayer.
THIS IS AN OUTRAGE.
I like both
What a bastard.
But RPG's, single or multi, i just frickin' LOVE!
For a game like Skyrim, it will find a better home with a different gamer.
Turns out some people buy games purely on hype alone, which was probably the case with your so-called dudebro gamer.
People buy games for different reasons overall. Its not about any one thing these days and people certainly don't have to like what you like to have a good time. There are even people that play games for a purely linear story and that it, on to the next game. They won't do the side things.
They won't catch birds in Skyward Sword, won't find all the places people went insane in Portal and may never even look at Modern Warfare 3's single player campaign.
Deal with it.
