[Editor's note: Zulu takes on Mega Man 9 for his Feel the Hatred Monthly Musing piece. -- CTZ]
Mega Man 9 kicked my ass, took my lunch money, and gave me a swirly. Not since Ikaruga, has any other modern game stepped in to beat me down and strip me of my pride. Mega Man 9 however, has taken the pleasure of breaking up this gap for me. Don’t get me wrong, subjecting myself to 8 bit beatings is nothing new in my book. I tend to be very masochistic as is when it comes to playing older games. I seem to believe that I take on this pain inflicting attitude simply because my expectations for difficulty generally gravitate pretty high for the games of yesterday.
In comparison to the majority of games today, older games tend to be the equivalent of eating nails. Mega Man 9, as a modern day game, is an exception. I went in expecting the difficulty to be somewhat lackluster and watered down because of it’s date, but I was wrong. Dead wrong. This game not only looks and plays like the original titles, but it hits just as hard.
Disappearing blocks, one hit kills, and near impossible maneuvers, these are all staples of the Mega Man series. Capcom clearly did not feel any guilt liberally throwing plenty of these obstacles into their latest installment. Mega Man 9, much like the previous titles, is all about luck, skill, trial, error, and memorization. This is not your boys games; this is not Twilight Princess. You will actually bare witness to the game over screen. You may even go as far as breaking a controller or shedding a tear or two. In the words of Ivan Drago, this game will “break you“.
I’ve played through all six of the original NES Mega Man games, but it has been quite some time since my last endeavor. I have forgotten what it was like to be totally in the dark with a new Mega Man game. I didn’t spoil this game for myself when content leaked out to the press. I went into this game almost as blind as Stevie Wonder. I wouldn't be totally blind though, I would still have my past Mega Man experiences there to guide me.

You've motivated me to turn that into a poster, and that was a great article. It made me want to go play Mega Man 9.
God, it has been quite a while since I last played number muncher. Glad to see I'm not the only one who remembers that game.
Oh and thanks, I'm glad the article didn't come across as a wall of whining. That's really the last thing I wanted. It's hard, but gratifying.
@Bwark-Kupo
Make that game your bitch.
I had a similar experience with the game on day one. Every boss level and every boss owned me at least twice before I got the hang of what I was supposed to do. Then I just had to do it.
Really good write-up. This is my very first Mega Man game (and I'm 32!), and I love everything about this game. Especially the music and the difficulty.
It's perfect just the way it is. It's a Mega Man game, it's supposed to be challenging.
And yes, I am one of those people who complain about the game's difficulty. It just doesn't appeal to me anymore. I've grown out of games needing to be incredibly hard. I don't have time for it.
You nailed it perfectly and this is what I wish I could say when people ask me why I play a brutally difficult game. It doesn't make me want to quit either. I makes me want to own it.
yea this game is freaking hard but i'm loving every moment
It's almost as sweet as kicking Splash Women's ass.
The common man's experience with Mega Man 9. The pain of defeat, the desire to win.
Truly worthy of the front page.
And forget Heretic, your Fei-Yen avatar is amazing.
other than that its not super difficult... but the challenges and ability to purchas a not-helmet will change that
That's exactly where I'm at. I just got to Wily tonight, about 20 minutes ago . . . and I really need to get to bed :(
But, not the worst thing ever. The stages are pretty funny to repeat once you feel like you've got the rhythm down. At least none of the bosses make you use exactly the right amount of any given weapon . . . Nah, I'm not bitter about the third wily boss in Mega Man 2 . . . damn that crafty bastard . . .
I mean something like MM is all about pattern recognition and the like, what if you play the absolute best of your ability but keep losing because the computer is a bastard, what then? Should you keep at it despite the anger or just give up?
You analyze the screen you enter in, by reading all the traps and enemies, and it's basically trial and error if you don't get it right the first time.
But yeah, the game's a bitch still.
Oh, and Mega Man 9 ain't that hard in the grand scheme of things. It's tough, and I got at least 10 game overs before beating it (especially on that 3rd Wily boss). But, I mean, all those old NES games are tough. We're really all just that out of shape.
Almost nothing is harder then Ikaruga. Stages 4 and 5 are near impossible to complete with the defaulted credits.
@The-Excel
Hmmm....I've thought about this since I started playing Mega Man 9. I'm not sure if I like it better then Mega Man 2 yet. I'll have to finish it first. So far it's a great contender. I will say that I like it better then the original and Mega Man 3 though.
@Tristero
Old age hurts. My fingers don't move as fast as they used to and my coordination is all shot to hell.
I think Ikaruga is much harder than MM9 though. If you play MM2 a lot, it is not as hard due to their similarities. You just need to pay attention constantly, which is something many modern games do not demand of you.
When I was a kid I rented ever megaman game from the local video store about a hundred times. I got so that I could beat the first one (the only one I actually owned, and therefore could grind whenever I wanted) without continuing, some of the levels without dying, some of them without taking a hit.
Now I'm older and modern games have ruined my skills, so it's really fun to play a classic-style game and see about getting them back.
Now I'm older and modern games have ruined my skills
i remember beaingt ninja gaiden as a kid, but now i cant even get to half the game....
want my skills back =[
Nice.
I'm trying to beat the NES games again before I download this. So far, I haven't really had a problem. I'm chalking it up to experience and I hope MM9 is a worthy adversary. :D
This game is awesome and terrible.
Glad to see that Megaman 9 is the former.
