Watchmen: The End is Nigh dropped today, and being the Watchmen fan I am, I excitedly downloaded it. Here are some quick impressions.
-This game is absolutely fucking gorgeous. Easily the best looking arcade game ever. The street glimmers, the blood is beautiful, and every environment is gritty and dark, encapsulating the novel's graphic tone. I spent about 2-3 minutes simply walking around as Rorschach; his stance and strut is exactly the same as the novel, and being such a huge fan, it feels awesomely cool to just be Rorschach. If you ever aim the camera at his face, you can see his mask slowly changing shapes, and little details like this make the game feel like you are living the novel.
-The gameplay is seamless, and incredibly satisfying. Each animation looks smooth, and Kovac and Owl fight exactly how you would imagine them to; Rorschach is rough, brutal, and filled with rage. He plays like a serious psycho, which is fitting. His attacks are brutal, sloppy, yet absolutely neccessary. Performing his finishing moves feels great, and just makes you say "Ouch. That was awesome." Night Owl fights in a much more calm, collected manner, using high kicks, and graceful, smooth moves to take down his opponents. Each character learns new moves as the game progresses, whether it's throwing an enemy into a wall to watch him go splat in all of his ragdoll glory, or a bull rage, where Ror runs head first into an enemy, slamming them hard. You can pick up weapons for new moves, and there are different special moves for each character to learn and perform.
-A lot of reviews have claimed that it's repetitive, and I get that. But isn't every brawler? The fun of playing beat em ups comes from the fun of just that, beating fools up. The gameplay is ridiculously fun, and the superb presentation makes smashing heads in just. plain. fun.
-The game features many nods to the novel, so fans of the original will surely smirk at some moments.
-Yes, the game is short. Were you really expecting a 10-12 hour experience from an XBLA beat em up? The game is great while it lasts, and is great for whenever you need to kill stuff for a while. Plus, if you play through as Rorschach the first time, you can beat the game as Night Owl, who uses a different fighting style, and feels like a new character. Clones with different skins, they are not.
-No online co-op. This sucks.
-The price. Yep, 20 bucks is a LOT of money, I know. This game is far from perfect, but it's ridiculously fun. It doesn't overstay it's welcome, and the splitscreen co-op makes for some good times. The first Penny Arcade game was 1600, and didn't a ton of people buy that? It was a great game, don't get me wrong. W:TEIN is really just a retail game that's ridiculously short. Would I pay 60 bucks for this? Fuck no. But 20 dollars will get you a beautiful, polished beat em up that is just a fun title to play for a while. While I definitely agree with a lot of it's downfalls stated in various reviews, I think most reviews have been a little too harsh. I can think of a LOT worse games to spend 20 bucks on.
Alllllllllllllllllright. Thanks to the magical powers that be in the forums(Mxy) we now have a forum for Friday Night Fights, and it's better than ever! People can plan FNF ahead of time now. I know. Mindblowing shit.
Tonight will be an amazing night, that's for sure. Unless you have a broken Xbox. Then it probably won't be as amazing.

10.I hope to become a successful filmmaker one day. Films are my life, and I hope when I get older I can contribute to the art of film making in a major way. I own over 200 dvds and I try to watch at least one movie a day. Reservoir Dogs is my favorite film of all time.
9. My life revolves around the TV show LOST. No, seriously. Ever since I watched the pilot 5 years ago, I knew that what I was watching was the beginning of the greatest television show to have ever existed. I contribute to a variety of LOST fansites, collaborating with other users to create in depth recaps, theories, screencaps, work to find SPOILARZZ and a ton of other stuff. I own posters, t-shirts, mugs, board games, necklaces, trading cards, and action figures for LOST, fuck, I even have the original first draft script of my favorite episode personally signed by the entire cast. I've even fucking seen the next 3 episodes of the show that HAVEN'T EVEN AIRED YET.commence laughing. Also, LOST: Via Domus(the game) was a giant piece of shit, and I loved every minute of it.
8. I am an only child. I have been an only child all my life, and sometimes I wish I wasn't. It saddens me when I think of the cool things I could have experienced during my life with a brother or a sister, that I never could. Then I think of all the horrible things a brother or a sister could have done to my video game systems and I am happy I don't have one.
7.I eat around 6 White Castle cheeseburgers a day. And not the good, yummy kind you get at an actual White Castle, I'm talkin the shitty, microwaveable ones you get at your local supermarket. No joke, I don't think i've NOT eaten at least a box a day for around 6 months. I am probably going to die soon.
6. It saddens me that splitscreen gaming is dying, but I really don't care. Some of my fondest gaming memories have been through the power of Xbox LIVE, and I can count my memorable spiltscreen experiences on one hand. Sorry, but this is the year 2009.
5. Video games did not become an addiction for me until the Xbox 360. Sad, right? The first system I ever owned was a sega genesis, and for a long period of time my system of choice was the PS2. I knew nothing of the internet, and purely judged my purchases by "hey this looks good, I'll buy it." It all started when I heard of a game called Dead Rising, and me, the zombicidal maniac that I am, said "SHIT I NEED A 360." Enter XBOX Live and suddenly I am gaming every day for hours. It wasn't too long before I entered the world of Destructoid and started becoming a part of the video game world and really wanting to know my stuff, so to speak.
4.I volunteer at my local homeless shelter, and whenever I see someone less fortunate than me, I feel awful. I don't really understand why some things happen to some people, but I do believe everything happens for a reason. I am so grateful for what I have and how my life has turned out.
3. I don't understand why people trade in games. I mean, why spend 60 dollars on a game and then give it back to get 20? Can't you just save up a little longer and know you can have an ever growing collection of games? Am I wrong? AM I WRONG?
2.I have an uncontrollable phobia of the ocean, and pools. Maybe it's because the inner zombie in me knows zombies aren't supposed to swim, I don't know. But I do know that the thought of being dropped in the ocean or a deep pool scares the ever loving shit out of me, more than anything in the world. You know that movie "Open Water", where those two people are alone, just floating the ocean? That is the scariest movie I have ever seen in my life.
1.My name is Timothy Butler, and I love zombies. Zombutler. :)
For all of you who never pay for themes, this may sway you....
Straight from the braid blog:
"Unfortunately, we had to charge the standard Premium Theme price of 250 Microsoft Points (which is about $3.10 in American money). We want to make it free, but Microsoft doesn’t like giving things out for free. But if you do buy it, you can be secure in the knowledge that you own one of the few Premium Themes that is not an advertisement — there is no text in the Braid theme anywhere. (Seriously, Microsoft, what is with the Subway: Eat Fresh Theme?)"
