I think what the developer's point in giving main characters no speaking parts, is that they want to immerse you in the game and make you feel like you're actually there. It sounds stupid and ridiculous, I know, but I that's what I get out of it. Also, I'm not sure Portal really counts since you're basically alone throughout the whole game until the end.
Yeah I believe that is their main excuse, the whole immersing experience thing.
However what makes me even more angry, is when NO ONE in a game has a voice. Zelda for instance, I think its about high time they gave the characters voices. I do not really care if they give Link a voice, but everyone else should by now have a freaking voice.
But yes, I am pretty damn glad when I am playing a game and the main character speaks and actually connects with the other characters. That I believe immerses the player more than no voice at all. Just my opinion.
I agree with you that it seems odd that they can go through that whole adventure without saying anything. I've found myself thinking about whether or not the meaning I project on some action is the same one the devs are thinking. If it doesn't affect the way the game plays out then it's fine that one player goes off to save Eli and Alyx because they like those characters and another one thinks "I don't give a damn about going after anyone but I'm going to kill that Breen guy." Is Freeman doing all this because he's afraid of G-Man killing him or because he's some epic hero or what?
So yeah, what Zombie said.
@ MrSadistic: Did you even read my post? :-/
@ Wylie: Couldnt have said it better myself! ;-)
I think it comes down to simply being a stylistic choice and, to me, criticizing developers for using silent protagonists is like ragging on a director for using long takes. It's what they want to do; it's their vision. It's understandable that not everyone will like it but enough people do that the games are very successful. So, I wonder if it's not really so much of a problem as a matter of preference/choice. You don't like silent protagonists and that's ok. Not every game has to work the same way for every person.
"Current trend..."
Do you play RPGs?
Also, Dragon Quest.
@ bus: I totally agree with you, its all about preference. :-)
@ Variable Gear: By silent protagonist, I mean having him not say ANYTHING, most rpgs still have text dialogue.
