Oh, hi there. My name's Zen.
I make stuff using pixels, Game Boys and ancient spirit magick. I like to write about videogames, art, airships, bleeps, bloops and other swell things. I think we're going to get along just fine.

At long last it's October, my favorite month of the year! Why is it my favorite you ask? Well, aside from the veritable cornucopia of Fall release dates in the coming weeks, October means the return of some of my favorite things: Brightly-colored leaves, candy, costumes and of course my favorite - Going to creepy places with large groups of friends with the intent of having the shit scared out of me! And what better way experience these things than alongside my robotic comrades from Destructoid?
This weekend Destructoiders from New York and New Jersey will embark on a spooktacular roadtrip to a few of the creepiest places the North East has to offer. First up is Centralia, Pennsylvania - an abandoned coal mining town town that was supposedly the inspiration for the town in the Silent Hill movie. Just like in the film, there are still decades-old coal fires burning just below the surface of the ground!
After nightfall we'll be heading back into New Jersey to check out Ghost Lake and The Shades of Death: a region known for a long history of grisly murders and strange phenomena. From there, we head off to the railroad tracks that are known to be the proving grounds of the infamous Hookerman, a local legend that is linked to hundreds of eyewitness accounts!
I'm so psyched about this trip because at long last it will unite some of my favorite people with one of my favorite pastimes. As of now, we're potentially looking at a fully-loaded 3-car caravan, but if you're going to be in the area and want to join in our spooky little escapade, get in touch with Tino and we'll see what we can do.
Shades of Death Road. It's the name of the road, supposedly because there was a disease that went around way back when and killed a lot of people. Something like that.
I'd say we should hit Clinton Rd too, but that's only scary now because there are actually dangerous people who drive up and down the road trying to screw with you.
@nintendoll True, but from what I've read, the entire area used to be called 'The Shades'. Then it got changed to 'The Shades of Death'.
One of the stories I read said that there used to be groups of brigands that would rob and murder people in the region, and eventually their territory was pushed back to only include Shades of Death Road as civilization encroached.
Even beyond that, there's sooo much more bad history concerning that place. I'm so psyched!
For once I know I'm gonna be in the city this weekend, but I'm not so sure if I'm up for the drive to Pennsylvania and whatnot -_-. Eh, I'll try and get in contact with one of you guys and we'll see.
Because I live on "Da West Coast" I shall not be joining you intrepid travelers. However, I would like some pictures of this Centralia place you speak of, if possible. Anything related to a real life Silent Hill sounds terrifying to me.
there is an old asylum/hospital near me called "fairfield hills"(newtown, connecticut) that cops arnt allowed to goto because its privet property but you can get inside some of the old buildings/tunnels.
yeah clinton rd is some weird shit. Those houses with the shades painted on the boarded-up windows freak me out. My friend was almost driven off the road there.
But the myth about the bridge where the little boy throws the pennies back at you is totally fake. Didn't work for us anyway.
@Fetusmilk I've known about Fairfield Hills for some time now and it's definitely on my list of places to check out.
I had no idea about any of these places in NJ beforehand though. I had a feeling that befriending the natives of New Jersey would be beneficial at some point.
Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!

This seems acceptable as well though. Wish I still lived up there =\
