I Wanna Hold Your Handheld: Beatles chiptune tribute album released
Zen Albatross | 12:06 PM on 10.17.2009 15 comments

Since the Beatles-hating Hamza neglected to post anything about this, I'm taking control to make sure you folks are aware of this amazing compilation by chipmusic collective 8-bit Operators. 'WANNA HLD YR HANDHLD Vol. 1' is a compilation album that pays homage to the timeless artistry of the Fab Four by re-envisioning their classic sound on antiquated videogame hardware. Nearly 2 years in the making, the album features 16 tracks by members of the world's chiptune elite, including Bubblyfish, minusbaby, Anamanaguchi, Glomag, The Depreciation Guild, Aonami, GOTO80, Herbert Weixelbaum and more.

You can hear the whole album for free at the 8-Bit Operators Bandcamp website. Physical copies and a downloadable version will be arriving soon, so keep your your eyes peeled at the 8-Bit Operators website.

Check above to see the music video for GOTO80's super-trippy C64 rendition of 'Come Together, ' done entirely in PETSCII (a variation of ASCII). Sing-along included!

This one is probably the least impressive chiptunes tribute album. I really didn't like it.

Come Together starts off kinda rough and weird, but I was feeling it by the middle.

Most of this album worked for me (specifically Back in the U.S.S.R.) but Come Together wasn't exactly my favorite. Though I have to agree with Necros, halfway through, I was pretty caught up in the groove.

I REALLY wanted to like this, but of the two songs I heard so far I'm not feeling it. That Come Together version is so off beat it's hard to listen to. Then I fired up Eleanor Rigby and I hate "vocals" like that.

I'll check out a few more. Massive points for the idea, so far, very little for execution. I hope the rest is better.

Alright. Sgt. Peppers was really awesome. I will listen start to finish now as that song saved my interest.

Sounds stilted and disjointed. I couldn't really hear the tune even after reading the song title. Maybe your next project will turn out better.
