I thought I was lucky when I bought a 60gb PS3, an extra controller, Madden 08, and NFL 2K8 from my cousin for $300 when she found out her boyfriend was cheating on her under the farce of traveling to and from New York to visit his daughter. Xbox 360 failure rates had kept me from buying one (until recently) and the PS3 price was the only deterrent keeping me from getting one of these so naturally I graciously volunteered to fan the flames of infidelity inspired revenge and take the shiny black reminder of a failed relationship off her hands.
A year later and my PS3 and I are enjoying our relationship but then life decided to piss in my Cheerios. My PS3... undone by the very reason I had abstained from buying a 360 for years. Only about a half hour into Mirror's Edge, I took the last of many falls off of buildings when my PS3 decided to not load the previous checkpoint. Restarting the console, it then refuses to even read any of my discs, occasionally giving me the error code "80010514," which I'm almost certain translates to DISC READ ERROR.
My 1 year warranty was invariably over since it was a launch unit leaving me with a dreadful inkling that repairs were going to cost me. Initially I was going to tell the customer service rep that I had cancer and worked a 50+ hours a week factory job to feed my three handicapped children and that paying for repairs would ruin Christmas but the woman on the phone sounded like she was so unenthusiastically reading the fine print off of a user agreement that I didn't get a chance to haggle. It was a cold lifeless conversation. She broke my heart and took 150 dollars of my money. So much for Fallout 3, Motorstorm, and Left 4 Dead. I'll just resort to imagining what the rest of Mirror's Edge is like and not finishing my LBP level that I've been toiling away at. DAMN YOU SONY!!!!!!
Did I just compare crucifixion to a console failure? Heh...
To tell the truth, this is one of the reasons I won't buy anything Sony. Back in the day, I had a ps2. One day, said PS2 decided it didn't like the games or movies I liked and refused to read anything. I looked online and found that because of a class action suit, Sony would fix it for you. A phonecall and a few weeks later, my PS2 was shipped back to me free of charge. The DREs had stopped and I thought Sony was awesome.
Lo and behold less than a month later the DREs started happening again. I called Sony and told them the situation. They told me that the DREs were my fault and that they would fix it for around $150. Clearly, if you "fix" something and it breaks down in no time, you fucked up. I still to this day am butthurt over this.
Yes, but I would have lost the backwards compatibility and I gave my PS2 to a friend. That and it would have been a potentially obvious fraud since the models are different, assuming all retail clerks aren't stupid.
The reason, immediately, that I didn't want a PS3 was because of PS2 DRE's. Now, with a slimmer model newer PS2, I don't have that issue nearly as often. But the whole deal about self fixes and this thing continuing to happen really peeved me about the whole Sony console experience. Having notheard about these sort of issues, I felt good about maybe one day getting a PS3.
You can understand now how I'm a little wary still.
try a laser lense cleaner if you have one, it saved my ps2 a few years ago after the DRE day occured and most people don't know about it but it is a possible fix and may work, will load hdd based games right?
@ Qraze: Alot of people seem to think its a Blue-ray diode burnout because when error code 80010514 happens you can still read DVDs just not Blue-ray discs. The only cure seems to be servicing. I'll just sit around and hope for a class action lawsuit.

@ Mr Sadistic: Thank you, your fiery passionate love sustains me through these troubling times.

I also hope that my 60gig launch title remains awesome....
I do though think i'm kind of committed. To sending it in for repairs. When it pulls it's only & final tomfoolery.....
BTW if Mr. Sadistic loves you enough. Your 60gb Ps3 will spawn a PS2 bastard child.
:)
