THE GAME IS MASTURBATING! Watch Super Mario World Play Itself

[We're going crazy tonight, with Zac, Lemon, and Tron all appearing on the front page! ZOMG! -- DMV]

Modding a game to make it glitch out and do freaky shit is one thing. Modding a game and turning it into an amazing work of art is quite another. Take, for instance, these clips of various user created worlds in Super Mario World. In each of them, a sort of Rube Goldberg machine is set into motion, allowing the "player" to do absolutely nothing to get from point A to B. Not only is it hypnotic, it cripples the mind.

Screw saving the best for last. This is the best one. Sure, it starts off nice and easy with some fanciful Bullet Bill dodging, but things quickly get ri-damn-diculous in the second section. In an elevator, Mario is in constant back-and-forth movement in every direction as bullets fly from the four corners. The final second when he hops onto Yoshi? Brilliant! There's even a boss battle at the end.

Here's another one, again with a fast paced second section. The shell catching coin/blocks bit is great.

By now, you get the idea. This one is worth it just for the well timed ending.

Always end on a joke.

Awesome.

Ebert, watch this and tell me games are not art. Tell me you did not feel fear, amusement, and sense of total victory over the course of this two minute vid.

Tell this and you lie Ebert.

YOU LIE

This is total win. Some epic level building going on there, although I'm not so sure about the wacky sliding physics happening, but I'll assume it's just icy.

Has this person discovered the definition of hardcore gaming? A game so hardcore, it plays itself?

wow...just wow

So you're telling me that the player had to do absolutely nothing in that first video? Unfuckingreal.
Neonie's Avatar
oOo I saw this when it first appeared on the Cblogs. Im suprised it took so long for it to get on FP if it was going to get there.

@Tron Knotts

Your post is full of loss. Completely set up recording with no concurrent human input of what is happening on screen =/= video game. You just watched a movie.

@Neonie: I'm the one in charge of clog promotions, so it might slip by me from time to time. I'm working on a more refined system to keep me in the loop with what should be promoted.

I saw one of these videos that was in the level with the chainsaws on ropes that come after you, it was pretty intense. These are just awesome, makes me look like a chump at the game.

These "automatic" Mario World videos have been popular on Nico Nico Douga for a while now (http://www.nicovideo.jp/search/%E8%87%AA%E5%8B%95%E3%83%9E%E3%83%AA%E3%82%AA). Quite cool, aren't they? Stage titles are usually funny, too -- the stage in the first video is "Luigi's Grave". Also popular to kill a bunch of Yoshis (otherwise known as ‚Å‚Á‚Ä‚¢‚¤ "Detteiu" for the sound it makes).

Yoshi is a moonwalker extraordinaire.

If you were to cross Mario and Jackie Chan, it might look something like this.

I don't think WOW covers this. Maybe WOWOWWEWAH?
twincannon's Avatar
Holy shit, the green shell work in that second one is nothing less than artwork.
Salamande's Avatar
So, hey, on the first video near the end around 00:45, when he grabs that green shell...doesn't that require the player to hold a button? Or have I lost it?
topgeargorilla's Avatar
Increible!!
MisterMingo's Avatar
@brainderailment: YES! Like playing video games! ...Wait... (Kind of an odd comment for a gaming blog, wouldn't you say?)

Anyway, these are awesome! In one he makes a shell hit a series of "ON/OFF" switches in time with the music. Pretty impressive, I must say.

@Salamande: Yeah, I think some button presses are implied at times in the videos. I noticed that he slides in one of them as well, which of course requires you to at least hit down once IIRC.

Genki-JAM's Avatar
Dang. That shiz is banannas. That first one blew my mind.
The-Excel's Avatar
There's a hack of Super Mario Bros. called "Air". One of the stages was a hands-off demo like these and that caught my attention more than the regular stages did in a superplay I watched of it.
