About Me
Our hero can be seen chronically masturbating to hardcore lesbian porn, mostly because I'm too lazy to close the drapes.

Anyway, as a gamer, I like to keep my selections varied. I'll intentionally play bad games, in the hopes that at least there's some redeeming quality about it. Usually, there isn't. However, I can truthfully say that That's so Raven was a much better game than Hanna Montana.

Plus, I like Jack Daniels. A lot.

Which Guitar Controller is Right for You?

So you wanna rock. Who doesn't? The hard part is deciding which guitar is best for your gaming needs. Today, I'll do a comparison/ contrast between the Guitar Hero 2, Guitar Hero 3, and Rock Band guitars. These are for the 360, so other console permutations may vary.

Guitar Hero 2

The Gibson X-plorer guitar is a pretty sweet rig. With its double humbuckers, solid body construction, and unusual shape its a favorite among metal guitarists like James Hetfield.

Pros:

Long cable
great feel
balanced tilt sensor

Cons:
Its not wireless
Start and select are in an awkward place, and sometimes gets pressed during insane solos

Guitar Hero 3

We are introduced to the Gibson Les Paul Epiphone. A standard in rock, it too has double humbuckers, but sports a hollow body construction, giving a twangy sound. Jimmy Page is well known for his love of these axes, and sometimes plays them with a violin bow. Making it sould like a, well, guitar played with a violin bow.

Pros:
Wireless
Interchangeable face plate
Start and select are in a much better position than previous model

Cons:
Eats batteries like candy
Collapseable neck sometimes causes a gap, leading to unregistered notes
Extra sensitive tilt sensor

Rock Band

A staple in rock history, the Fender Stratocaster is a must own for any guitarist (although there are numerous knock offs that can produce adequate, if not superior sound). The three single coil pickups produce a clean sound, fortified by its solid body build. Hendrix played on one, strung for a lefty, of course.

Pros:
Extra set of keys, closer to the body make soloing easier. Also good for kids. Or midgets.
Springy strum bar
Selector switch allows players to tailor their sound in overdrive mode

Cons:
Not wireless
Whammy bar often hits selector switch, almost forcing you to stay in wah wah mode (or off) all the time
Incompatable with Guitar Hero

Now, I wouldn't say that that would be it, but this is just my experience with it. What say you, sports fans? Help me build this consumer reports article by adding your own opinions!

I love my X-plorer (cause I can pretend I'm Claudio Sanchez) but good god the x-plorer is loud as fuck when playing some of the harder songs.

Good review, man. I am getting both Rock Band and GHIII for christmas this year, so I will be getting both the strat and the les paul, so we'll see how that works out

i already have the original SG from guitar hero 1 (the black one, and the cord is starting to come out of the end of it unfortunately)

well, not having rock band here in the uk, i can only select between the first two and i'd have to say it's hard...id say the les paul for career, simply due to the wireless awesomeness and the xplorer for online for reliability purposes. Especially the fucking star power sensor. It's absolutely bloody rediculous how sensitive it is. If you begin showing any signs thagt you are enjoying yourself it will deploy star power, more often than not just before a nice 20 second vocal solo.

You forgot one controller though - the regular pad. I can;t believe that there are achievements for completing the game on expert using a normal pad, that is the most stupid concept ever. However i would love to see this, it would be mental...and probably bloody.

I like the first PS2 ones better than anything else, might be only me, but I've had some sort of trouble with all the 360 ones (GH2:broken whammy, GH3: green fret wont work always, RB: won't detect down strumming after a while)

Nice idea for a post. I'm still debating whether or not to pick up GH3. It'd be nice having a bass for when rock band is released over here, but I think GH2 was the zenith of the series, and I'm really not feeling the changes they made(particularly the needlessly/unrealistically complex note charts coupled with the more forgiving timing, it's a rhythm game, not a fucking button right pressing game!).

@Excremento, Claudio is god, dude. No question in my mind about him being our holy savior.

Back on topic, there are a lot of shitty 3rd party guitars on the market these days, aren't there?

the rock band controller feels really weird, with the odd sharp angled recessed frets and the long weird strum bar. Stay away.

My favorite is a real guitar that can be played on thousands of amps (wireless or heavy duty wire) or played acoustically. Con: no star power initiator.

Thanks to all of you for your input! I'm sure a lot of people will find our collective assistance helpful in selecting a controller that fits them. Otherwise, they'll end up like me with every single guitar controller.

@ Goei

Ibanez acoustic/ electric. Its got a better sound than most others that cost a crap ton more. But, yeah, the tilt sensor's nonexistent.

*sighs* I can't decide between the GHIII guitar and the Rock Band guitar. I love the solo buttons on the RB guitar and sliding is very easy. I do get lost sometimes though. GHIII guitar isn't as likely to break and I love the wireless for when I am rocking hard.
