Starting another round of drawing-a-day. I'm not sure my theme yet (last time it was RPG ladies), suggestions are welcome!

A couple of weeks ago I went to the store with a friend looking for a new RPG. I was considering Arc Rise Fantasia, but I must be getting old because I couldn't bring myself to spend $40 on a game that was getting average reviews. Instead, my friend and I decided to check out the used Gamecube section. He picked up Eternal Darkness and I found Baten Kaitos, a game I had seen around for a while but never bothered to pick up.

Now, for $6, even if this game ended up being "meh" I couldn't be upset about it the way I would have if I dropped $40 on it. I was pleasantly surprised, Baten Kaitos ended up being a really enjoyable game with a card-based battle system that stayed engaging far longer than most turn-based RPGs. The plot starts out like any other JRPG, but halfway through throws a plot twist that felt like a slap in the face-- my only complaint is that it was resolved too easily.

I own both Baten Kaitos games (even though I have only played through half o the first). Like this drawing but I wouldn't know what to suggest for a theme for your drawing-a-day.

Sweet drawing! I played Baten Kaitos and really enjoyed the battle system. I forget most of the story, but I remember the voice acting being terrible! I checked the option to turn off most of the voices. It sounded like bad actors talking through tin cans and string.

Yeah, I've actually had the voice acting off for so long that I forgot how bad it was...

You see, that's exactly what I did a few years back. I bought it for 40$ and it ended being meh. The amount of money wasted made me hate that game.

Bought the game for 8 dollars, really didn't like it. Both the story and the voice acting were terrible, as the battle system was average.

The graphics were really good though, and so is your drawing!

@Occams: Thanks! The game definitely has it's flaws, but for $6 it's totally worth it.

@Nic128: Yeah, lately I feel super critical of new release RPGs, because not only are you spending a lot of money on something that could be average, but if you're someone who feels like justifying your money spent then you just end up spending 30+ hours trudging through a game you grow to resent and then not even finish.

@Mirax: The voice acting was really a huge mistake, I would have stopped playing if you couldn't turn it off. But I enjoyed the battle system and the story. The story does fall apart after they start revealing everything, but I felt the same way about the last couple of Tales games. In a couple of ways it's actually very similar to Tales of the Abyss.
