Mod Watch - The Ball Mod Final Chapter!
Yehat | 5:16 PM on 11.12.2009 3 comments

[Sorry I fucked this up FF keeps crashing after a new update]

Well I've sort of reduced this whole Mod Watch concept thing to just keep you guys updated on current mod happenings because if you seriously need someone to bug you to play Project Reality or Thief 2X After the Metal Age then my hands are going to cramp.

Anyway the final chapter of The Ball is out but this is only the final chapter for the mod version. That's right after this the mod becomes a full retail product and with this final release to the mod they've added a last bit of polish to the mod as well as a whole new set of enemies and abilities.

So what are you waiting for?! Oh you don't own Unreal Tournament 3? Well if you want to wait a little bit the Ball has been hinted that it may show up on the free UDK!

Oh and guess what other choice UT3 mod will soon be releasing a big update?

That's right ]]The Haunted just had a pre-release of version 3.0, the final of which will feature a weapon class revision, explosives!, a new map and new sets of animations.

Best of all? After MSU Phase 4 the Haunted will appear on UDK for FREAKING FREE TO ALL.

Mod Watch - Half-Life 2 (Multiplayer Mods)
Yehat | 8:48 PM on 11.07.2009 7 comments

Well I was actually holding back on this one but it's no secret that both Half-Life games are absolute havens for mods both big and small. So I couldn't ignore this 10 ton elephant any more so here again is some more of these games within a game we call mods.

Current List Price: $39.99*
Amazon.com: $39.99*
Steam Price: $19.99

*Note the boxed copies of Half-Life 2 by itself includes Counter-Strike: Source and Half-Life 2 Deathmatch for free. The Orange box does not include CS:S and HL2:DM.

Orange Box Version:
Current List Price: $29.99
Amazon.com: $27.99
Steam Price: $29.99

You may find a few here you've already know about but I bet there's at least one here you don't know about! Again these are multiplayer only mods and since there are so many I narrowed my field to ones that are actually to a level of playability, at least post prototype and are top notch. In fact there'll be a part 2 to this since there are still many I haven't tried. So I'll just be giving a quick rundown of the ones I have so far!

1) The Hidden Source
Shorthand: Modern Day, Stealth, Horror.

Site: http://www.hidden-source.com/

You ever want to be that movie monster in a game but rather than stalking AI enemies you were stalking human targets? Well then you need to play the Hidden anyway because it's absolutely awesome with such a very simple concept. And yes it's just 1 versus 7 others and the 'monster' doesn't have anything except a knife, he's not that durable either but what he does have is being completely and utterly invisible at all times. You can imagine the tense atmosphere this creates!
My Grade: A-

2) Dystopia
Shorthand: Futuristic, Cyberpunk, Class based.

Site: http://www.dystopia-game.com/

Playing a bit like Enemy Territory and Assault mode from Unreal Tournament one team attempts to complete a series of objectives while the other team seeks to prevent this. Seems simple but there's a whole other level of complexity in addition to this, there is a sort of Tron-esque battle system that those with hacking tools participate in and this works to further their team's efforts, unlocking doors and so on. More people need to play this mod.
My Grade: A

3) Eternal Silence
Shorthand: Futuristic, Space Battles, Pilot sim, Class based.

Site: http://www.eternal-silence.net/

Originally starting out as a mod for Battlefield 1942 it was eventually discontinued and put onto the source engine because the BF1942 engine is a dog of an engine to work with. Players use spacecraft and dogfight with each other while trying to destroy their opponents fleet, including making boarding incursions to destroy them on foot from in the inside. Another top quality mod
My Grade: A-

4) Empires
Shorthand: Futuristic, RTS, Battlefield, Class based.

Site: http://www.empiresmod.com/

Another former BF1942 mod, taking a bit from Savage and Allegiance one player on each team plays the game as a RTS game while all other players play through it as an FPS with vehicles. A tried and proven concept Empires adds some personal customization to the player's loadout and vehicle as well. A rather large downside to the mod is the model and map quality is sort of all over the place, some are excellent, others not so much but still great fun.
My Grade: B-

5) NeoTokyo
Shorthand: Futuristic, Cyberpunk, Class based, Round based.

Site: http://www.neotokyohq.com/

A former UT2004 mod (I sense a trend), the polish on this mod is through the roof, seriously, you'd swear this is a retail game at it's level of quality both visually and from an audio-aspect (some great music). The mod is without a serious flaw though and that the gameplay itself doesn't have the same level of polish. All the complexities of tools and what not more or less devolve into a basic CS:S clone. However that's not a huge detractor, after all it's a proven gameplay style it's just not as astounding as the rest of the game.
My Grade: B

6) Insurgency
Shorthand: Modern day, Gulf War, Realistic, Class based.

Site: http://www.insmod.org/

Well it was bound to happen that a modern combat type mod would make it's debut to Half-Life 2 but at this level of quality was sort of unexpected. Focusing primarily on realism the mod does have a bit of a learning curve but it's focus on objective point taking makes the combat feel like it's moving much more quickly, especially since most of the maps are within congested urban areas.
My Grade: B

7) Fortress Forever
Shorthand: Team Fortress Classic, Class based, CTF, Base defense

Site: http://www.fortress-forever.com/

Some people disagreed with the direction TF2 took Team Fortress, preferring the more slow and base defense focused of the original Team Fortress iterations. Taking more cues from the original TFC aesthetically it actually went back and did some redesigns and rebalances from TFC. Though it will always be in the shadow of TF2.
My Grade: B-

8) Zombie Panic
Shorthand: Zombie smash, team versus team, Objective base, survival.

Site: http://www.zombiepanic.org

Leading up to Left 4 Dead there was a big itch to play zombie modes though Zombie Panic has existed far longer than L4D and plays radically different than L4D. A couple players start as the zombies while the rest are survivors, the object is eliminating the other team but each time a Zombie successfully kills a player they become a zombie sort of like a game of tag another has the humans racing to escape the level by completing a set of objectives while the zombie players get infinite respawns compared to the one life Humans. It's fun but rather limited since the zombies aren't hordes but slow especially lethal damage sponges.
My Grade: C+

9) DIP RIP
Shorthand: Post Apocalyptic, Car combat, Deathmatch and Team DM

Site: http://www.diprip.com/

A bit of Twisted Metal inspired mod and while it does have a high level of polish it still feels very unfinished but I had it on this list because what's there is fun and they're still diligently working on it and from what they have so far could lead to something astounding.
My Grade: C

Phew and there's more too but I haven't played these ones yet but they're out and need a shout out! I'll get to them next time but why wait for me go try them now!

JailBreak Source

Mod Watch - Red Orchestra & Unreal Tournament 3 Pt2
Yehat | 6:09 PM on 10.27.2009 6 comments

Note: The Unreal Tournament 3 mods are located after the Red Orchestra stuff!

Well now this is quite a tale, a former mod to UT2004 becomes a retail game and gets mods for itself! Heck even their second game was a former mod to the very same game Red Orchestra was a mod to! (Unreal Tournament 2004).

Current List Price: $29.99
Amazon.com: $10.99
Steam Price: $14.99

More people should play Red Orchestra more than most other World War 2 multiplayer games. It's a game that will be very playable even on hardware from 2003 and it's got something for everyone. It's more realistic than Day of Defeat but not as realistic as Operation Flashpoint 1 or Arma1/2. It's got vehicles, it's got tight city combat. Large scale combat, small scale combat. Historical authenticity but not at the expense of gameplay (Like you will need 2 people to operate a tank but not 5 like in more simulation type shooters). Plus for a nearly 5 year old game it still looks quite nice!

But enough of that now because now we're on how to make such a terrific game better! With big mods!

1) Mare Nostrum
Shorthand: MP (PvP), WW2 (North Africa and Sicily), Limies, Italians.

Site: http://www.marenostrumgame.com/

You'll find that the mods for Red Orchestra are all pretty much all WW2 focused because really Red Orchestra did it so very right it's only short coming (besides lack of dedicated single player) was that it primarily focused on Operation Barbarossa and the ultimate fall back into Germany. Mare Nostrum instead pits the Brits against both the Germans and Italians around the Mediterranean sea and while the focus is North Africa the maps are much more tightly deigned even on the vehicle centric maps. This is good considering the British players will be facing Tigers and Panzer 4s with 2" Gun Matildas, Piats and Valentine tanks. So despite of course the vehicular superiority the German team has the map design really helps keep the feeling that match is quite balanced rather than hoping the Ghost of Montgomery will guide them to victory. The design and idea of setting it North Africa also help paint a drastically different of the War of a more hectic and racing battle rather than a morose and chaotic feel that the original game shows of the Easter European front. Much of the flaws of this mod are not in design or anything of the sort but because like many mods it is an ongoing project so a lot of things feel underdeveloped such as the Italians and the overall variety itself. Plus the attach rate on the mod is isn't as high as it should be. However it should be noted that they are currently working on version 1.4 which will provide new maps vehicles, weapons and more Italians inclusion! If even half those updates make it to the new version you can already bump that score up to a B+.

My Grade: B

2) Darkest Hour
Shorthand: MP (PvP), WW2 (Western Europe), Limies, Yanks, Canucks & Tanks.

Site: http://www.darkesthourgame.com/

Well it was all really inevitable if you think on it, you can't do a WW2 game without a mention of the Western front! Though believe it or not despite the fact that the Western front has been done to death it actually feels like this mod belongs as a part of Red Orchestra, like all the features and escalations made to the original game are also realized in this mod. Darkest Hour is actually a merger of two mod teams working on Western European front and the results are quite good. A great deal of effort was put into making sure to be extremely authentic in its weapons and it pays off incredibly well. Even the big 'open field' maps are played a bit differently as by this time in the war there was a greater emphasis on mechanized infantry and so you'll find transports and self propelled ATs occur more frequently than in the original game. Some flaws with the mod are the map quality is very schizofrenic range from excellent quality to simply average at best which really looks strange to the very high quality models. As well a lot of the outdoor maps feel a bit too boxy and flat even though this is more than likely a limitation of the Unreal 2k4/Warfare engine.

My Grade: B+

3) After-Hourz MinionWorkz Community Expansion
Shorthand: MP (PvP), WW2 (Eastern Europe), Expansion, Vehicles.

Site: http://after-hourz.com/forum/

Not a total conversion but a mod that adds a whole truck load of new toys and maps at extremely high quality including gameplay changing type vehicles such as Half-Track AT vehicle and goliath known as the KV-2. It's certainly feels like an expansion pack and is well worth having it's just a shame all the singular packed items are sort of scattered all over the After-Hourz site. But it's largely not a problem because Red Orchestra will already auto-download this mini-expansion after you first encounter a server that is running it so don' t sweat looking it out for it since it will find you. Additionally Tripwire has made some of the additions official and included them in their most recent patches.

My Grade: B

It's funny when you think back on all the great MSU contests that never made it as far as Tripwire like Ludocraft's AirBuccaneers... a man can dream... but onto the two mods I forgot for UT3!

---------------------------------------------------------------

Okay sorry for missing these two last time so I'll keep it brief of why you should watch these two Unreal Tournament 3 mods:

Renegade X

Though it's in a released beta form I have yet to try it personally but I am downloading it now as we speak and its goal is a port of C&C Renegade's multiplayer to the UT3 engine with a few extra addons. So already this mod has my seal of awesome!

Site: http://www.moddb.com/mods/renegade-x

Bailter Ray

360 Users get Shadow Complex so we PC users get Bailter Ray to fill in for now! Though Bailter Ray is more like a traditional plaftormer with a dash of Little Big Planet. Currently only existing now in a one hour prototype it still oozes style and I hope they get onto making this a full on complete mod and roll out of prototype right into beta!

Site: http://www.moddb.com/mods/bailter-ray

As for the next game? I'm not at all sure, got a lot of options, Half-Life 1 & 2 Single player mods, Half-Life 2 Multiplayer mods, the Battlefield series, mods without games, and some huge overhaul mods. I guess next time will be a wild card!

Mod Watch - Unreal Tournament 3
Yehat | 12:16 AM on 10.24.2009 8 comments

With recent events in the PC Gaming industry there are a lot of threats to PC Gaming's perks including one of its greatest treasure: Mods. So I felt now would be a good time to debut a mini and consistent series of posts (because it'll get titanic as a single one) to spotlight some of the mods I have found to be excellent and worth your attention. Now I'm not talking about the small mods, like new weapons or maps/mappacks, that would take forever to list, I'm talking about the BIG ones! The total conversions and the community expansions.

So let's start off with a game that has lesser known but high quality mods, Unreal Tournament 3! (Note: These were all played with the PC version. I have no idea if these are compatible with the PS3 version)

Current List Price: $29.99
Amazon.com: $14.97
Direct2Drive: $19.95
Steam Price: $19.99

1) The Haunted
Short hand: SP(skirmish), MP (Co-Op & PvP), Third Person Shooter, Zombie shooter.

Site: http://www.moddb.com/mods/the-haunted

This is really and truly top quality modding right here, I could pour endlessly the praise of this game in a single post but I'll try to give you a nice summation of why if you own UT3 you NEED this mod. Imagine if you will Resident Evil 5's multiplayer but y'know better and dare I say a little deeper. Playing a great deal like RE4 and RE5 you are however allowed while aiming your weapon to move around but at a hindered speed and unable to jump, additionally you automatically start with 4 weapon types: Melee, Pistol, Shotgun, SMG/AR. After a certain amount of kills a weapon upgrade kit will spawn and you can add it to your currently equipped weapon which will turn it into a new gun (Shotgun to Sawed off to Auto Shotgun and so forth). A nice touch is ammo pickup and weapon upgrades only appear for each player individually so it nicely prevents one person from hogging all the power ups as well as forcing the players to not turtle to snatch power ups. Enemy variety is particularly excellent with many requiring you to switch up your tactics such as a bladed type that can become temporarily invincible to ranged weapons. You can also play as the 'demonic' as well similar to Left 4 Dead's Versus mode for some additional fun. The mod is deliciously violent and polished so well I could swear it was a retail game, the only bad marks I have for it is the human player models have a rather stiff walking animation and there's only 3 maps (though they are extremely well made). It is totally inexcusable if you own UT3 on PC and have not even bothered tasting this delicious modification.

My Grade: A

2) The Ball
Shorthand: SP(Story & Challenge mode), First Person, Adventure, Puzzle, Episodic.

Site: http://www.moddb.com/mods/the-ball

Another extremely high quality mod that could pass for its own individual game the Ball is a rather unique flavor echoing a bit from Valve's game: Portal. In this mod you have but a single weapon a pneumatic hammer that can both push and 'call' this massive metallic sphere known as the Ball. Throughout the game many of the obstacles you encounter need to be done by using the Ball in many ways sometimes even as a weapon when necessary such as the occasional enemy and boss fight. Using it as a heavy weight, a source of cover, a drive train for a vehicle and more. The game story sets the player as an archeologist that has fallen and stumbled into an underground Meso-American ruined city and as the player continues his exploration he learns of the god's tool stolen by man and now at the wrong end of these deities reclamation of this coveted tool... the Ball. The scenery in the Ball is quite gorgeous, the Meso-American theme starts off as a simple ruined temple then unfolds to whole hidden city of gold to a once totally isolated world and ecosystem. Episodic in nature (it's currently on episode 4 with the final episode 5 still coming) will keep you playing for a good 5 to 6 hours, as well as having secret collectibles and a challenge mode as well. There's not much bad about the ball though some puzzles require you to use the ball in ways you have yet to learn (such as the ability to make the ball 'jump'.) as well as since the Ball is so honking huge your vision can be obscured when trucking it around. A fantastic experience and worth a play hands down, especially if you enjoy the puzzle/adventure nature of games like Portal.

My Grade: A-

3) Prometheus
Shorthand: SP (Story & Challenge mode), First Person, Puzzle, Futuristic.

Site: http://www.moddb.com/mods/prometheus

A curious mod and quite a bit of fun with a nice fresh concept- Time travel and altering time. Prometheus gives the player the ability to 'play-out' 3-5 temporal clones of themselves, assign duties for one minute and thirty seconds. For example clone one is set to hit a switch that opens a door for the next clone and then later open another door for another clone. Confused? Don't be it'll come naturally to you and don't sweat it there's no limit to how many times you can try and if you ever get totally frustrated the mod allows you to skip to the next level if you just want to continue the story. You'll also get a sniper rifle and at times you will actually need to kill your prior clones in order to terminate an action of theirs to prevent certain actions from happening in your first play. Did that make it a little more confusing? Well in the later levels you will then gain the ability to edit your prior temporal clones actions! The mod gets a big old gold star for titanic original gameplay but a few things prevent it from being a total super star. For one the scenery is relatively bland with a very sterile science compound feel to most levels and after a nice tutorial the game's difficulty sky rockets. As well many of the puzzles require you to utterly fail several times just so you know what you can do since it's impossible to have the foresight to push a switch X amount of times when you can't even see what the switch you pushed did. Still, a nice quality mod worth a spin and get your think meats working. If you're still not sure on what Prometheus is then here's a clip- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pRjU2IcJ1BM

My Grade: B-

There are other mods as well but I personally think those three are the cream of the crop but wait wait... there are some mods that are not yet finished but show fantastic promise that you should certainly keep your eye on because I have a great feeling about them and after I give you a quick run down of them you'll may be anticipating them along with some actual retail games. Seriously!

Angels Fall First: Planetstorm
Release date: January 2010

Currently it's not even in a beta form but after playing the very incomplete Release Client 5 I can say this is cooking up to be a real treat. The best way to explain it is to think of Half-Life 2's Eternal Silence mod and if that scratches some heads then imagine a much more complex version of Skaarj Space Station from UT2004s Assault mode. You start out within a flotilla of capital ships and must destroy the enemy team's fleet. You pick a class and get to your fight and either try to fire and bombard the enemy ships or infiltrate them on the inside and mix it up with the other players crewing the ships... oh did I mention you can captain the capitol ships too!? There is also a big (40 players) ground assault mode similar to capture point style of the Battlefield franchise with a few neat details.

Site: http://www.moddb.com/mods/angels-fall-first-planetstorm

Airborne
Release date: To Be Determined

This one caused a lot of stir when some screens started to pop out and for good reason because it is utterly beautiful. Though its currently not in an actual playable sense other than an open sandbox level even with that you see positively amazing potential. A steam-punk setting with a dab of Skies of Arcadia the mod plans to be a single player experience akin to a third person action adventure. As well there appears to be a great emphasis in aerial combat with propeller craft against airships.

Site: http://www.moddb.com/mods/airborn

Sanctum
Release date: To Be Determined

Tower Defense games are all the rage these days along with Zombie Fights and Survival modes and well if there's one thing to point out is when it's done and it's done with such polish you could see yourself in its reflection and go "Hey now, who's that sexy loo- OH MY GOD THERE'S A MAN WITH KNIFE BEHIND ME." In addition to being a tower defense game you also have a much more hands on factor with this as you also participate with your set up defenses as you fight a myriad of enemies. The page itself currently says it will support both single and multiplayer so it should be interesting to see how this will play out in multi!

Site: http://www.moddb.com/mods/sanctum

So there you go, three excellent mods to play with until you go back into the trenches to curse Infinity Ward's name. Please feel free to comment with any other mods worth looking at for Unreal Tournament 3 for now or in the coming future!

Next time I'll be blathering on Red Orchestra which funny enough started out as a mod itself for Unreal Tournament 2004.

Philosphy of the Game: Alpha Centauri
Yehat | 12:48 PM on 09.11.2009 0 comments

Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri is a turn based strategy empire sim game. An especially good one at that but while that feeds the addiction of the '4am, 1 more turn' syndrome the game has something else, something quite profound that makes it stand taller than nearly all other strategy games. Its philosophy.

The Civilization games are about the greatest story ever told, human history. Alpha Centauri is instead taking 7 facets of all human civilizations in the most radical sense but as soon as you play each faction you begin to see the logic and reasoning behind each. You may not agree with it but you see why it is, accept it and you find yourself pressed to contemplate it over and over again within your mind. The game draws much of it's inspiration from two excellent Frank Herbert novels: Dune and The Jesus Incident and continues to press the gamer to decide which of these philosophies is "more correct."

The Human Hive seeks collectivism, a thing many of use would consider a negative but it justifies this on human spirituality. That the human race is a single entity and that you must learn to sacrifice for the betterment of humanity itself. That your own desires are one in the same as humanity itself and you can not let your pettiness cloud your thought and the thoughts of humanity.

The Morganites (Morgan Industries), champions the individual but it believes that this must be totally nonrestrictive, that you should not forced to concern yourself with others because it believes as soon as you do you have lost a part of your own individuality. You are responsible for yourself and no one else.

The Spartans believe that conflict is always necessary and that the only tragedy in conflict is losing more than you were prepared to. Even in words you seek victory and those who you can not defeat with your words you must defeat with force. To know when to show mercy and when to strike is the difference between true compassion and gullibility. To compromise is to show apathy.

The Peacekeepers believe in the freedom of all and the freedom of information that to limit is to impose control. To exert control over any information is tyranny. However this means on the individual level as well, there are no items or information that you can omit or hide. You are always open and thus open to be punished or removed. You don't own information even the information of yourself.

The Believers are religiously pious and while this will send a obvious shiver of closed mindedness about them they are not allergic to advancement. Instead they believe that all methods are flawed if they do not account for human morality. To do research with no morals is flawed, to do business with no morals is flawed, to fight without morals is flawed. That we as a people must advance but not lose our humanity in the process.

The Gaians seem at first very much like eco-hippies but their belief is that humanity is not a single organism that humanity itself is a facet of Earth ecology. That we are the drive train, the mind of Earth life and our bodies the air we breath, the water we drink and the plants we grow. That we are the flowers of Earth and that our purpose is to bring life to other lands, that humanity exists to propagate life because we are the mind of life itself.

The University is a favorite of many its belief is that we must further human understanding and knowledge and we can not be held back by our morals. We can not approach knowledge with emotional and ethical concerns because doing so we will learn nothing. That we must abandon our reservations and leap blindly into the void and hope it does not kill us in the process.

And after all that one of the underlying messages of Alpha Centauri is that "They're all right at same time.". That the sum of all humanity and our conflicts with one another are not wrong or vain but instead part of every civilization and every individual. It believes (as seen within the 'Ascendant' ending) that human thought itself is both collective and singular, moral and immoral, dependent and independent and exists as one in the same.

There is so much I could say about this game just simply off it's philosophical messages, I had actually attempted to approach this entry one faction at a time but I had already poured over nearly 3 pages on the Human Hive alone. Instead watch some of my favorite secret project clips from the game that I feel can best describe what the game asks the gamer to contemplate-

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YO_xh7xIabk
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iY57ErBkFFE
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jdCB9yE9Hcc
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iwqN3Ur-wP0
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OhwqRnXC4hc

One of the few games as art that doesn't approach the player in visual or metaphorical way but in a literary and philosophical way. The game is a collection of human beliefs and how they face themselves, each other, an alien world, and a slumbering god.

Is the PS3 Courting PC Gamers Via the 360 Repulsing the PC?
Yehat | 3:42 PM on 08.24.2009 9 comments

I decided to make this post while I still don't own either major "next-gen" console to at least give a little less biased opinion. I also should state that I can't speak for all PC Gamers and the very tribal PC Gaming Community. However I do fashion myself as one who favors PC gaming over console gaming and I am the type of person who would rather wait for the PC version rather than play the console version sooner.

In my first Destructoid Blog post I talked about as an old Tribes, Planetiside & Battlefield vet that the PS3 online system of pushing player numbers is looking more attractive to me by comparison to the 360s view of online gaming numbers that seems like we time traveled back to 1996. Though now on a closer inspection there seems to be much more to it that makes me think that this may in fact be a goal of the PlayStation 3. In essence it seems like Sony is scooping up those PC Gamer's that feel Microsoft had pushed them aside.

We used to be best buds, Microsoft. Now you don't wanna hang out anymore.

During the original Xbox's debute there was much skepticism from all but once the console came out and proved marketable there grew a bit ire from PC Gamers. As a Western console it could not really tap into companies that had typically been console developers including Western Console game developers that Sony had nearly monopolized. So it drew upon companies that had before been traditionally Computer Game developers such as Bungie, FASA, Bioware, Codemasters, Lionhead, Redstorm and so forth. That's not to say PC and Console ports didn't happen before but the two gaming 'spheres' were fairly well divided and for the first time PC gamers felt like someone was actively dipping into their honeypot.

This nearly killed a 20 year old franchise.

However this was soon accepted after all what was on the Xbox would be on the PC and it became a state of mind that if you owned a competent PC there was little reason to own an Xbox. However as the 360 debuted Microsoft fired its guns in fury so that it would not be satisfied with its distant second of the last gen. The cost of this however would put an enormous divide between them and PC gamers though the financial whims and gains of PC gaming is amorphous and fickle so to many, including Microsoft, it could be considered an acceptable loss. Through some financial spur or desire however Microsoft attempted to break back into PC gaming but with all the grace of a drunken ex and thus beget what many PC gamers call one of the most insulting online gaming services devised: Games For Windows Live. (Note: Not to be confused with the Games for Windows Initiative)

Behold, PC Gamers: the shaft.

When Microsoft had presented this the shock of having to pay for boxed features on the PC platform flew as gracefully as a lead bathtub. The Tribal PC Gaming Chieftans were quite insulted. Though this had eventually been resolved and made completely free by Microsoft there persists numerous problems with Windows Live and many simply broken and undeveloped systems. Also while Microsoft persists that well over half of their Windows Live users are also Xbox Gold members one has to question this when the fact that only one PC exclusive game uses Windows Live (Dawn of War 2). This leads me to believe that those number of Gold Windows Live users are not the typical buyers of PC games, instead they may be Windows Live users only because they simply also own a PC rather than actually game on it.

This idea didn't fly before why did you think it was going to work a second time, Microsoft?

Now that the Playstation 3 has come it seems to be reaching a rather different audience and seems almost blatantly obvious. The three big platformer designers of the PS2: Insomniac, Sucker Punch & Naughty Dog all created a single new IP for the PS3 that seem not only more Western focused but games that are decidedly not as console centric as 3D Platformers. There are more signs of this, Killzone 2's multiplayer now is a distinctive nod to the "Fortress" games and mods versus the original's fairly generic and pedestrian multiplayer DM. Additionally Warhawk goes on to embarrass DICE, who have apparently after BF2142 forgotten how to make a Battlefield game for currently 3 iterations going on 5 (Battlefield Online and BC2).

There are other factors as well as such as Sony Online being very supportive of dedicated servers for their online gaming. As well as Epic making the successful push for Mod and custom player content support on Unreal Tournament 3 for the PS3. Interestingly as well is in Zipper's last two SOCOMs on the PS2 they showed this level of online gaming design competency as well with guild support, dedicated and community servers and lobby system.

I don't mean to say this to flame the 360 and 360 gamers because the Xbox 360 is successful and it is successful for good reason. It's a great console after all and has many upon many excellent games and services but as a longtime PC gamer I do feel affronted by Microsoft with its new moves and strangely catered to by Sony. I also know as a PC gamer that our platform is currently in its lean period and that ignoring console gaming even as PC gamers is well quite plainly stupid.

And now some fun

 about me

Well I'm 25 and a working Architect who has a hobby for games. I like discussing video games in all manners from design to technical to even philosophy. I even like playing them too (Honest!). I'm an ol' PC gamer since the Apple II and I'm not too big on consoles but at the same time I enjoy them quite a bit too though I don't currently own either the PS3 or Xbox360. I typically like all genres of games though I'm not too fond of Sports and Puzzle games but I have some outstanding exceptions to those of course.

Yehat? What's a Yehat?
Yehat are a race of giant space-faring alien Scottish pterodactyl bees.
