Before I say anything I want to give major props to CaffeinePowered for paying for the server all by his lonesome
Ok, time to start bitching. Since the "Dtoid" server for TF2 started I've had a problem with it. It wasn't my lack of admin or maps or even settings. It was player slots. I'm for the most part an online gamer. And as such I cant stand it when somebody I know can't get on and play with me. It kills me.
As I sit here now typing this, the server is currently public, just like Destructoid is. But there are instances when the server is full and a lot of people cannot get on. Most of these people I have never heard of and I suspect them to be randoms who see a low ping server and join it.
A while back I proposed an idea to CaffeinePowered which consisted of a couple of steps
Step 1) Spam forums and Cblogs with a list of everyone's steamID and get everyone whos wants on, on.
Step 2) Implement this list into the server, if the server is full and there are randoms, they get kicked in favor of dtoid community members.
Step 3) ????
Step 4) Profit
The beauty of this is that it doesn't require for admins to be on 24/7 to moderate player slots and if a Community member cant get on because of full server then he/she knows that they aren't being gypped by Mr. Average McFaggot.
The server is barely full anyway except for FnF, but the issue is that the server is named "Destructoid.com" what that means is that community should always come first.
If you're going to neglect the community, then change the name of the server so no one could possibly get confused. It's all about principle
Am I the only one that thinks this way?
How do I then put preference between someone who plays on the server daily vs someone in the steam group that plays once a month.
Reserve slots can be tricky, the plug-ins that do implement them do so by holding a slot empty except for a certain steam ID. So if I had 2 reserve slots the server is capped at 20/22 unless one of those 2 steamIDs is on and takes those slots. I believe you can assign more IDs than slots, but it forces those slots closed if someone wants to use them.
Right now Im working on getting SourceMod working, then I can implement individual admin accounts. If you play a lot and are apart of the community you get admin.
If you can't take a second to PM one of something like 15 admins, you haven't been in the community long enough to justify even having a reserve slot.
Preference over one Dtoider and other is the issue. It doesn't matter if you play once a week or a year. The issue is random pubbers. THEY shouldn't have preference over dtoiders.
If you have a script that will let the game run to max, but kick people when a dToid member runs, then you should have that.
I never modded Source stuff, so I don't know. If this were Tribes, I could write all the server scripts for you myself ;P.
CaffinePowered has offered a hand and you're trying to take an arm. I think that when he gets his admin system running properly there won't be a problem anyway, as you'll just be able to ask someone to kick someone off for you. It's cool that you raised the point but I'd leave it there.
So don't kick a gift horse in the mouth I guess.
