TF2 "Dtoid" server gripe.
Yashoki | 8:23 PM on 11.15.2007 21 comments

Before I say anything I want to give major props to CaffeinePowered for paying for the server all by his lonesome

Ok, time to start bitching. Since the "Dtoid" server for TF2 started I've had a problem with it. It wasn't my lack of admin or maps or even settings. It was player slots. I'm for the most part an online gamer. And as such I cant stand it when somebody I know can't get on and play with me. It kills me.

As I sit here now typing this, the server is currently public, just like Destructoid is. But there are instances when the server is full and a lot of people cannot get on. Most of these people I have never heard of and I suspect them to be randoms who see a low ping server and join it.

A while back I proposed an idea to CaffeinePowered which consisted of a couple of steps

Step 1) Spam forums and Cblogs with a list of everyone's steamID and get everyone whos wants on, on.
Step 2) Implement this list into the server, if the server is full and there are randoms, they get kicked in favor of dtoid community members.
Step 3) ????
Step 4) Profit

The beauty of this is that it doesn't require for admins to be on 24/7 to moderate player slots and if a Community member cant get on because of full server then he/she knows that they aren't being gypped by Mr. Average McFaggot.

The server is barely full anyway except for FnF, but the issue is that the server is named "Destructoid.com" what that means is that community should always come first.

If you're going to neglect the community, then change the name of the server so no one could possibly get confused. It's all about principle

Am I the only one that thinks this way?

Sounds logical, captain.

Ive said it before and Ill say it again, I'm not going to make some 50 - 100 player long SteamID list so certain players can have preference over others.

How do I then put preference between someone who plays on the server daily vs someone in the steam group that plays once a month.

Reserve slots can be tricky, the plug-ins that do implement them do so by holding a slot empty except for a certain steam ID. So if I had 2 reserve slots the server is capped at 20/22 unless one of those 2 steamIDs is on and takes those slots. I believe you can assign more IDs than slots, but it forces those slots closed if someone wants to use them.

Right now Im working on getting SourceMod working, then I can implement individual admin accounts. If you play a lot and are apart of the community you get admin.

If you can't take a second to PM one of something like 15 admins, you haven't been in the community long enough to justify even having a reserve slot.

That would be an awesome plan, Caffeine's response excepted, but there's one small hitch: not enough Dtoiders are ever online to make a decent server. If it weren't for the pub trawlers, the server would hardly ever be occupied. And how much can anybody, even members of Destructoid, enjoy a game that has nobody in it?

Peaches: with this system, it will only kick out randoms if the server is full. People who are random pubbers can still play. But if the server is full, and you're not on that list you get kicked, it's not like no one can get on the server. Dtoiders are just preference.

@Caffeine

Preference over one Dtoider and other is the issue. It doesn't matter if you play once a week or a year. The issue is random pubbers. THEY shouldn't have preference over dtoiders.

Sorry but I have to agree with Yashoki on this one. I get real pissed when I sit there for 20 minutes and cant get on the server. I dont have a problem playing with pub trawlers, but multiple times the server is full of them, and I cant get on

I gotta side with Caff on this one. As much as I love playing on the server, its a slippery slope to get a server rep for preferential treatment. Having admined a server before, reserved slots would sit open and be unused a majority of the time; if it was an admin using the slot to boot trawlers for regs, you'd lose more then just the booted ones; you never know who's playing with who when it comes to randoms.

So? What is the server named? Destructoid. Nuff said.

I have to agree with Yahoki here. I don't want to drive anyone away from the server of course, but giving preference to the group the server is named after is par for the course on Steam. I don't think any trawlers will get seriously angry for not being preferred over Dtoid players.

If the server scripting only allows you to hold reserve slots, then it's retarded and fuck it.

If you have a script that will let the game run to max, but kick people when a dToid member runs, then you should have that.

I never modded Source stuff, so I don't know. If this were Tribes, I could write all the server scripts for you myself ;P.

Caf passwords the server when we're having specific nights on it. That means you have to read DToid to know the password, therefore it's our server. Going any further than that favours people who hardly play at all on a server that's quite popular and, even if they're DToiders, I don't think that's particularly fair. If you want a space at a non-DToid army time, wait your turn. You can even be playing another server while you wait!

CaffinePowered has offered a hand and you're trying to take an arm. I think that when he gets his admin system running properly there won't be a problem anyway, as you'll just be able to ask someone to kick someone off for you. It's cool that you raised the point but I'd leave it there.

It's his server, not Destructoid, he just named it that because he was nice enough to share it during FNF's, and I'm sure he uses it all the time on other days with his friends.

So don't kick a gift horse in the mouth I guess.

You know, in retrospect I guess Snaileb has a point. It isnt a Dtoid server, its CP's (LOL CP) server

King3vbo has a point -- it's not Destructoid's server. As such, I would go as far as to say it shouldn't be named Destructoid at all. The shenanigans on the server reflect on the site as a whole, especially when there isn't anyone official around to moderate.
