Scrolling through Steam one day I got some news of a new Modification using the Source engine called Insurgency. This time I thought I would do a Destructoid style review rather than a "I think this is kewl, u dl it plz"
First of all, Insurgency is modern combat based, so think Battlefield 2 or Call of Duty 4. Before I say anything else, You'll need either an installed copy of Half-life 2 or Counter-Strike:Source. When I first entered the game I noticed that the textures and models are amazingly detailed, meaning that this raped my video card which is an x1300 pro (woo-hoo ATI). After turning down little extras like Anti-aliasing and High Dynamic Range. I went from 23 Frames indoors to about 120. Very nice.
Insurgency plays straight out like a Clancy game. Very realistic, very team based, and you die in about 2 shots. If I were to describe this game in one sentence it would be: "Americas Army, without all the shit." Your gun doesn't jam and you don't have to wait 20 hours after you die to spawn back up. In short, it's Fast and Furious.
Like most team games Insurgency doesn't work if no one is working as a team, but the Insurgency development team thought this out by adding alternative game modes rather than the normal Point capture, but there aren't very many servers running alternative game modes.
A huge part of what makes a game for me is immersion and while you have people screaming into the microphone spouting out commands, you feel like you've been transported into the streets of Iraq fighting off insurgents.
This game looks, plays, and feels beautiful. So if you're in the mood another little mod to add to your collection definitely head on over to
http://www.insurgencymod.net/ and pick up this mod in progress.
The mod sounds fun though, I might have to install HL2 again to try it out.
I can only play this monday, because I will be taking a trip down to Nicaragua. So I'll be gone the Week of E3...oh poo.
Looks cool
