It's rare when you play a videogame that captures that original feeling that got you into videogames in the first place. That spark of interest that gave birth to your love affair of the medium. As gamers, especially weathered gamers such as we that play everything, it is easy to become jaded. To become cynical, always at the ready with a critical eye at most games and really who can blame us? With most games being derivative, not adding anything new, infected with
sequelitis, one may think most people who cover games have lost their way, their passion for the genre. I beg to differ. They merely seek what a truly good videogame should offer the player... the illusion of being somewhere else.
Of being someone else. Maybe a sleepy young boy who eventually becomes a hero, or it could be a rotund plumber with a fetish for jumping, regardless of who or where you're at, what they all share in common is an immediate pull that immerses you in their lore and makes that controller in your hands melt away. Rare indeed are those games that can achieve this. I come to you with the revelation that this game, simply called
Flower has done just that for me... and could very well do the same for you.
Without given away any information that may disrupt your experience with the game, I will merely tell you in a basic overview that in
Flower you are a pedal of a flower being carried by the wind. You use your six axis to move about and press any button you please, to dictate the strength of the wind that makes you glide through the air. If you tap a button, you get a sliver of wind to propel you. If you hold the button, you soar like a bird. That's all I will tell you. I guess as a descriptive to get you to play this game, that doesn't sound too exciting. And on paper it really doesn't. Some even have said this is merely a Zenish screen saver. It isn't. To those that think that all I'll say is: You're doing it wrong.
There is an objective. You just need to seek it.
Flower is gorgeous. From the initial start up, to the menu, to the game itself, it's just simply gorgeous. The graphics to this game have a subdued beauty that is hard to articulate. Not only that but the music, which changes depending on what you are doing, is absolutely fantastic. My wife who loathes videogames walked in on me while I was playing in the den, sat down in my LayZ Boy chair to read like usual and was hypnotized by it. While playing it I had the goofiest grin on my face that I couldn't get rid off. That and the feeling of
Wow that I couldn't shake.
I want to say a LOT more but I can't. I wont ruin it for you. The game is 9.99 at the PSN Store. If you have a PS3 buy it. Period. For the price of a bucket of chicken at KFC you can add this game to your collection. If you don't have a PS3 go to your friend's house who owns one and tell him to get it so you can get a shot at it. Just play it. To me, it's that good.
Bottom line:
Yes. You
NEED this game.
...and thanks to you I got it!
and thanks to you gays, I'm staying away from it.
i got it. haven't installed it just yet. working my anticipation up before i play it. i loved flow.
@ Qraze:
I hated fl0w. It was okay but I thought it was more of a tech demo than anything else. If you loved fl0w, you're going to lose your mind with Flower.
awesome! my nephew should love it as well.
Can you shoot things in it? Because if you can't shoot anything I'm not interested. Note that I will be willing to overlook any lack of violence if the game has tits in it, so let me know if it has those too.
I was going to download this at some point this weekend. But now you're just going to make me skip some precious sleep and get it now, aren't ya?!
Officially bombarding my friend with messages bugging him to buy this. I really want to see what this is like. It looks so damn relaxing.
DO WANT!
Second on the goofy grin. Actually, not just that. My face underwent a myriad of expressions over the course of the game and my mouth hung open more than once. There are so many moments when everything comes together and you can't help but feel alive.
I've been waiting for a blog like this. THANK YOU! I will be buying this when I get home tonight.
I played this for about an hour yesterday. I creamed my jeans it was so purdy
"My wife who loathes videogames walked in on me while I was playing in the den, sat down in my LayZ Boy chair to read like usual and was hypnotized by it" < THIS. I was hoping this was another game that would turn my misses' head a little. Just a little.
Bought it last night, finishing the Dload later.
Lots of trophies involved?
ps. Great read.
im going to get this at some point but need monies for SF4. which im sad most places are running out of ps3 CE's. which also makes you think "is noone getting the 360 version?".
Bought this yesterday as soon as I got home. I agree 100%, this game is marvelous. It's funny, my wife had the same reaction, she just sat and watched instead of working on lesson plans. Beautiful, awesome, must buy.
Sounds neat, I've been thinking about it.
Any trophies on it?
@Mix
Yes it does. Now I believe all PS3 games are required to have them.
I downloaded it last night, and 3 of my friends all sat around me and watched me play it. They were completely mexmoraized by it. They absolutely loved watching me play. It's hard to find a game these days that other people actually want to watch you play. Just incredible!
It is fucking gorgeous. I will say this to people. The scenery takes a turn. It's not all just green grass fields.
Also. Use the analog stick.
Getting this on YOUR recommendation, Jimbo. Any failure to impress will be exacted as bloody vengeance upon thee.
Great write up man.
I overheard you bringing up Flower as I was leaving SOCOM last night and I almost stayed on to discuss it.
How refreshing does it feel to play this game? I bought it when I got home from work and it blew my mind. The sound is amazing, the colors are brilliant and the controls are flawless. I was skeptical at first (I hated flOw) but this game is captivating. I have been looking for a game to unwind to after a stressful day at the office and this is it.
Unfortunately, my brother didn't think it was very cool. He watched me play about 1/2 of a level:
"Is there a time limit?"
"Where are the enemies?"
"I don't think I'll like this game"
The game isn't for everyone (he only plays PJ Eden/ Monsters and Uncharted) but it's cool that you share the same opinion.
Lastly, it's only 10 bucks. That's only 2 drinks at the bar.
Somthing else I want but wasn't prepared for, great.
ALREADY DONE SIR!!!
Reason for me to do something with my 60GB PS3 that I hunted for for 3 montsh, lol. Was on the fence about this one Yojimbo! Also, what the hell? You can get a bucket of KFC for $10?!?!?
Some even have said this is merely a Zenish screen saver.
I'm guilty of that.. I might give this ago when I feelin' blue sometime. Probably tomorrow ;)
@ Iviera: OMG THIS IS MY COMMENT!
This whole two people in the same household using Dtoid , I have got to get used to!
ahem. Let me say this now!:
It is fucking gorgeous. I will say this to people. The scenery takes a turn. It's not all just green grass fields.
Also. Use the analog stick.
I was on the fence as of last night. I watched the trailer and the whole catch the wind song combined with the visuals sold me. I held off on the purchase as it was late and I was going to get some sleep for my 12 hr shift today, ugh. From what I've been reading so far it seems like I made the right choice to pick it up. I'll be downloading this after FNF tonight.
Whats the file size of the download? Anyone remember?
Awesome, I've been looking for something mellow to play and this seems like just the ticket.
I REALLY liked Flow, so as long as its as relaxing and not-pushy-to-finish-a-goal, then I should be satisfied.
I dont get it.
I'm so downloading this when I get home tonight. It was just going too fucking slowly last night when THE ENTIRE FUCKING PLAYSTATION NETWORK was trying to download the game at one time.
If I had a PS3, I'd probably get it... too bad I still don't :(
I'm seconding Jim @ this. Just getting it on your recommendation Jimbo, hope it lives up
@Shipero
*High five*
Thanks for the info!
Put it this way; I don't own a PS3 but I've recommended that my mum and dad pick this up for their one. Along with Pixel Junk Eden and Flow as well.
I need to get this game. In a few days.
But I'm not gonna get it. :D
I don't have a playstation 3, how can I get it?
Will it still be relevant when I finally do get one?
so whens de-flower comin out?
I've wanted to play this ever since I heard the concept. The reception from certain people (yourself included) has pushed me into the realms of salivation. As soon as I can I'm going to find a PS3 and blitz through this bad mamma jamma.
Thank Christ for short games :)
