I just recently read a post on Aeropause by Richard Windsor titled
How Fanboys Are Ruining Our Gaming Sites and the first thing that struck me after I read this, was a burst of uncontrollable laughter. Is this guy for real?? Let's see he writes for Aeropause an Internet gaming site and he thinks Fanboys are idiots, ruining all of these other gaming sites that he peruses, with their PS3 bias. So much so that he has to remove them from his precious bookmarks. Where was this when the PS3 was getting raped the last year for being a grill, an overpriced Blu Ray player, and a machine with no games??
While we're at it..aren't we all Fanboys?? We can say otherwise but really, we all have our
console preference, do we not? Fanboys ruining Gaming Sites?? Hey Richard, here's a NEWSFLASH: Fanboys are what populate most gaming sites. The more fanatical ones are the majority in the internets, not the minority. They're the ones that read everything out there to try to formulate an aggressive point as to why their console of choice is the best in their minds. They are also the ones that drive hits, traffic, diggs, whatever the hell you want to call the measurement of interest in a particular piece, go up.
To be fair, Ol' Rich just wasn't complaining about the PS3 loyalist out there, but he did single them out. What I took umbrage to was the fact the he labeled Fanboys
idiots, raving incoherent gremlins throwing monkey wrenches into popular gaming sites.
What!?! What
Utopian Unbiased Internet is Richard visiting or writing on?? I'd like to know because it isn't the one on planet Earth.
Let's examine the terminology Fanboy:
Fanboy (sometimes spelt fanboi) is a term used to describe an individual who is devoted to a single fannish subject, or to a single point of view within that subject, often to the point where it is considered an obsession. Fanboys remain loyal to their particular obsession.
Stereotypical fanboys are attributed with a devotion to the creators and principles behind a work with which they are currently enthralled. Fanboys are noted for a very emotional attachment to their chosen subject. They will readily engage in debates about their chosen subject.
Does that sound familiar to anybody on Destructoid?? Better question to ask, does that not encapsulate everybody in this site?? The fact that we are all fanatical about video games , be it on whatever system, earns us that fanboy label , whether you want to admit it or not. That label has been thrown around with comic book fans too and guess what? They make the majority of the sales on those publications! Same here with fanboys on the internet. You would be blind, stupid or both not to know that if you want hits on your front page story as an editor/writer, all you have to do is highlight a specific console and out come the fanboys. And the debate. And most importantly..the interest.
Here's a free tip Rich, this yellow brick road leading to these popular gaming sites are paved by the backs of fanboys. The foundation of your own site, among others, are most likely cemented by them as well. Be wary before you dismiss them altogether, before you start throwing barbs out there way, lest you take a step and realize all too late there's nothing underneath supporting you anymore.
But it's not so much that they're fanboys, and I try to avoid such terminology unless it's totally applicable. Fact is, morons ruin game communities. You can have awesome and mature fanboys. Hell, I'm a Dynasty Warriors fanboy as you know, but I don't attack the multitudes of people that hate the series. I don't define myself by the games I love, and take it as a personal insult when it's slammed (although some TRY and make it a personal slur).
That's the difference between a Fanboy and a Fanboy Idiot.
Destructoid has a couple, but the intelligent out number these idiots.
But being loyal to one console is ridiculous to me and I can't understand it at all.
And that's exactly what I felt Rich did. Attack the multitudes of people that are passionate of games and game systems. If he were to say a bunch of morons instead of fanboys, my stance would of been different.
It's funny though how people have a disdain for the word "Fanboy" because of the implied stupidity stigma attached to it. Hell I freely admit to being one. Wether other do or not, doesn't negate the fact they are.
But otherwise i agree with Jim. Replace fanboy with whatever word you give the meaning of, "fucking idiot who has one viewpoint, and will 'argue' that point to the death, in a moronic and frustrating way in which they win only in their own minds (feel free to add more...)".
That being said, people who get furiously angry and defensive when someone posts a negative fact about their game or system of choice can go die in a fire.
No matter where you go and despite how good the community is, there will always be people who disagree strongly with you can voice their opinion about it. Such is the way of the internet.
It's fanboys that make me ashamed to be a gamer.
Life's no fun if you don't spend a little time arguing with people :)
It's idiots that do that.
And if other people's actions make you feel ashamed of being a gamer then your constitution is quite fragile indeed.
But like everyone else, I do object to people who sling baseless accusations or spew vitriol. Everyone has the right to have an opinion, not the duty to have an opinion.
And so the fuck what if it is? It's fucking disgusting and incredibly immature how almost every gamer acts. "DURRRRRRRRR MY SYSTEM IS BETTER THAN URS." "LOL UR XBOX BROKE DOWN." "LOL WII SUCKS."
I'm so sorry that I wish that people would act and think with a little bit of maturity. How silly of me. Let's just bang our clubs on the ground and grunt in approval when our system is mentioned.
I'm so sorry that I wish that people would act and think with a little bit of maturity. How silly of me.
Goes on to say:
enh go fuck yourself
LULZ
Ironic that the person who wants people would act and think with a little bit of maturity, resorts to "fuck yourself."
Not every skinhead is a racist.
Not every gamer is a nerd with glasses.
Not everyone from Texas is a redneck.
Not everyone who listens to Metal has long hair.
Not everyone whit a monocle is good looking
Not every drinker is a Ron NSFWorkmeng
and
Not every Yojimbo is Japanese.
I'm a fanboy, meaning that I love my console and games. As a fanboy (in my oppinion) you just love something. Which doesn't mean you hate everything else and are destroying whole communities.
I'm ashamed to be associated with fanboys since other people can stereotypically label us as asshole gamers with unprecidented idiocracy rather than thought provoking opinions and views.
So sometimes, yeah fanboys make me feel ashamed that they lower the outlook of our general community. WTF you talking about Jimbo?
What I'm talking about I posted. If the actions of others makes you ashamed of being a gamer..you're a retard. I don't associate myself with idiots.
I label myself a fanboy because I love games..period. I don't put stock in stereotypes and additionally anybody can have thought provoking opinions and views. Not just some nubian gamers.
If you choose to associate yourself with idiots and it makes you feel ashamed of being a gamer then read the quote you eloquently copy pasta in your response again.
But anyone who sticks to one company (or simply can't afford to purchase more than one console) and then goes on to form an irrational emotional attachment to a large, faceless company as a result of their console purchase, and flame people on the internet and argue in favor of who is going to win in the latest "console wars," is a raging fucking idiot.
Does Sony pat you on the back for flaming as many 360 users as possible or for mentioning RROD as much as possible on the internets? Does Bill Gates send you a personal e-mail each time you belittle the PS3 for having no games?
Maybe there just needs to be a distinction between "fanboy" (I will totally own up to being gay for Final Fantasy) and "console warrior" (I will fight to the death for you, Sony/Microsoft/Nintendo/Atari!).
Also, cocks.
Psh, seaman ticks and all that.
Yes..yes it is. lol.
Thanks for being a dick in your response. Maybe he's saying fuck you because you're calling fellow gamers retards & idiots, and not because they're being ignorant, but expressing their opinions an-... hey! Weren't we just discussing how fanboys are just like this? Good follow through! Very hypocritic.
Anyways, that's like being a Republican and saying George Bush doesn't make you feel ashamed to be one. It's not that you don't associate yourself with them, but it's because they will always give you a bad name. Any person can relate to that, unless you choose to "not associate yourself" with the problem, which just makes you part of it.
I like you . Your good people. But what the on God's green Earth are you talking about?? The people or fellow gamers retards & idiots that I highlighted are the ones you yourself feel like associating with them makes you ashamed of being a gamer. Which in my opinion, is ludicrous.
As for not associated myself with them ..how does that make me a part of it again?? Explain this abstract logic of yours please. BTW: for the record, I am a Republican ( love my tax cuts ) and I agree Bush is an idiot, but again just because he is,that doesn't mean we all are. Do you not see that reasoning??
GO!
I see your reasoning, but if you choose to ignore the problem rather than educate it, then you're a big part of the problem. Destructoid has had alot of assholes here that have been reformed into respectable people. Kotaku bans them. It's just not right and I see no difference.
You're trying to redefine "fanboy" outside of a general gamer's contextual definition of "fanboy" That's fine, and whatever toots your horn, run with it...
But the fact is most people, will refer to themselves as a gamer or a hardcore gamer before they'll call themselves a fanboy.
The derogatory cutdown of sticking -boy in as a suffix alone is enough to make most guys cringe and back away from the term.
Fanboy will always stand lowly amongst those who know what it means. It holds the same classification as whipping boy, boy wonder, bat boy, or any other phrase or word that integrates boy into the terminology.
"Boy" is meant to be inferior to any other stature because of our male driven society. If you want to buck the system and have it mean something else in your eyes, knock yourself out, but be ready for the inevitable snickering that comes with it from others who don't agree with your thoughts on the matter.
I love you too.
I think what's not being seen eye to eye , is what the term Fanboy means to you. Obviously we all have our own feelings when that word arises ( As I've seen here ) but to me the word has always meant being passionate about something whether it be games, comic books, sex, beer. hell you name it.
To associate and generalize all fanboys of being cavemen IMHO is ridiculous. Hence why I posted my blog to begin with because I took offence to what Rich originally wrote because ( again ) I consider myself a fanboy of videogames.
That's a fan ladyboy, that's totally different.
Don't mind me, I just flip when I read articles where the author goes on to explain why a fanboy wouldn't ruin a gaming website, and goes on to call the people in his blog idiots and retards.
There is no arguement here anymore, just misunderstanding and mud slinging.
"Get him Steve Dave!"
"FUCK YOU FANBOY"
;) love that movie.
i am a ps3 fangirl, i admit it!
This blog has made me realize that we should just all hold hands and pet unicorns and make love with dolphins.
Gray Fox has a good point:
I think it is the hardcore die hard loser types who only play one system becuase they think it's the best and hate on anything and everything that the other game companies do that ruins crap.
Also, when a game is reviewed and doesn't get an 11/10, WHO CARES? as long as you like the game play it and shut the hell up.
It's getting hot in here. Too much name calling.
And dvddesign is pretty much right.
That's exactly what I said in my comment. I'm a fan of my console but that doesn't mean I've got to bash the other ones. The only reason I can think of why people want 'their' console on top of the charts is the better it sells the more games you eventually get. But a monopoly is never good for quality. So I'm glad there are other consoles out there.
So what if you have online? So what if you have 2000000 times more polygons on 1 screen? So what if etc? I'm gaming for ME and me alone, as long as I'm having fun doing what I do, I'll fucking do it and nobody should tell me off for it :p ( at least within the gaming realm )
Also, I've just bought my second PS2 today ( since my 'original' one is borrowed to my sister )...
luckily in by the time the XBOX had its first decent pricedrop, I figured I might as well get that too, and then I got my PS2 as well since otherwise I would just've been stupid to have them all but one... :-)
Now I'm waiting for the PS3 to drop price and start packing rumble-controllers with them by default and I'll get it too...
