I'm a man of simple tastes. What strikes my fancy, at any given time, need not work overtime to net a glance of interest or gain my rapt attention. The only prerequisite being is just be cool. Show me something either done proficiently or bursting with originality. So being the devout fan of the fighting game genre and having purchased both BlazBlue and King of Fighters XII, which coincidentally are both cool, I'm doing what comes natural... pitting them against each other. What I concluded after much play of both games is as surprising to me as I'm sure it will to you. Walk with me as we turn the corner together and come to the realization why King of Fighters XII is blatantly better than BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger. King of Fighter XII's roster totals twenty-two whereas BlazBlue is a paltry twelve.
It doesn't take a rocket scientist or a mathematician to recite the mantra of more is always better, just ask the ladies. While Blazblue's cast of characters are unique to one another, that doesn't negate the fact that KOF XII just has more. In this modern day and age of HD consoles, having less than twenty characters to choose from in a fighting game is an insult to fighting fans everywhere who require more to get their beatdown on. That Aksys Games thought they could pull the wool over our eyes with their lack of a roster by adding a plethora of modes for BlazBlue only highlights their conniving nature. Sure, there is more to do with their roster but the reason is because if they didn't have more modes to lull people with, they would realize sooner how they have been shortchanged. King of Fighter XII isn't a fruity fighting game like BlazBlue is. It's a real fighting game where punches and kicks rule the day.
See that image above. That's Kim trying to ram his kick into the liver of his opponent. What you don't see there is produce, like pumpkins being thrown at each other. Or swords that are a mile long, poles that magically comes to life that spin of their own accord, spikes that come up from the ground, or what about holes that have the gravitational pull of a small planet? Yeah that isn't on the menu with KOF XII. Know what is? Actual reliance on punches, kicks and throws. You know... fighting. For those who yearn for cosmic pyrotechnics, big ass red skinned freaks who shared a locker with Barry Bonds, a little girl with dual guns who watched Christian Bale one too many times in Equilibrium and a poor man's version of Iceman with more feminine features, BlazBlue has you covered. If you want to tussle with your bare fists like a man, KOF XII should be your stomping ground. In the world of King of Fighter XII, fighters aren't comprised of midgets exclusively like BlazBlue..
The biggest fighter in BlazBlue, Tager in this instance, may reach the waist of a fighter in KOF XII. Now I personally don't have any issues with midgets, they're people too. I just don't want to play a fighting game where their whole roster is full of them. Say what you will about KOF XII sprite work but their roster has something BlazBlue's cast of characters don't have...namely girth. The sheer size of KOF XII's roster is beyond impressive. Them boys and girls are some big boned, cornbread, meat and potatoes eating folk. Unlike the salad eating, latte drinking dwarfs in the lands of BlazBlue. If Tager were to meet Raiden in a fight, Raiden would scrape him off his boot like a crushed cockroach. King of Fighter XII has Robert Garcia, BlazBlue doesn't. Garcia is a total badass plus I think he's hispanic/latino. That trait alone makes KOF XII better than BlazBlue. Everyone knows spanish people kick ass in any kind of fighting, be it game related or in real life. This is a known fact. King of Fighter XII has a damn cool name. WTF is a BlazBlue:Calamity Trigger?
A name may not mean much to some but to me it sure does. Fighting games of yesteryear knew this rule to be true. Back in my day games like Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, Killer Instinct, hell even shitty games like Wargods or Primal Rage had names that exuded testosterone by the buckets. King of Fighters' name acknowledges this. I want to be a King of Fighter. What the fuck kind of a name is BlazBlue? Do I even want to associate myself with a name like that? Does this name even remotely sound tough? Or does it sound more like some whimsical color for a baby's nursery? and finally the last reason why King of Fighters XII is BLATANTLY BETTER than BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger. King of Fighter XII is the top fighter for the real hardcore fighting game fanatics.
If you care to join us in the celestial mountain tops of fighting game tournament nirvana, if you want to rub elbows with the secret cadre of the hardcore elite, then look no further than aligning yourself with KOF XII and its league of practitioners. Your a fucking retard....good stuff Jimbo!!
Proof! Also there is a familiar face in this picture for long time dtoiders.
KoFXII = 1 (Chin)
BlazBlue = 0
Therefore, beyond a five o' clock shadow of a doubt, KoFXII if better than BlazBlue. QED.
@taumpytears
Oh god, Waku Waku 7 is so epic, I never even dreamed about meeting someone that also knows about the existence of the Citizen Kane of Fighting games !
Good article! Made me laugh.
SHIT, wrong blog...
Oh, and they'll try to gank DLC out of us that's proven by Shoryuken.com to already be on the disc.
Great, hilarious article, but my $60 hole in my pocket 'aint laughin'! I'm glad I bought SFIV as well: I'll be practicing, old man!
Also, KOFXII HAS a release date for UK so that makes it better than Blazblue.
I haven't been interested in KoF since I wanted to own a Neo-Geo. Yes, I'm a KoF noob, but KoF:XII looks lame. /grain of salt
I really want to like BrazeBrue..
But I think it's going to be SF4 I'm playing a year from now.
@Naib: I'd recommend at least renting KoFXII. The controls are tighter than SFIV and the engine is deeper and more rewarding.
Still..it's worth looking at whenever the netcode is fully fixed. But the game is still half done. A beta if you must. Still What makes this game top tier?
SHEN WOO
and I leave.
