Why Achievements are Crippling Multiplayer Modes.
Y0j1mb0 | 2:55 PM on 02.01.2008 37 comments

Ever heard that before? Or something similar to it?? What about looking through some forums and spotting something like THIS??

You know I never understood the whole achievement hysteria that everybody and their Grandma shares. It's funny... a little gray blimp with the words Achievement Unlocked appears and gamers unload in their pants. Maybe it's cause I'm old but I remember playing games just to play them. I didn't need the game to choreograph specific snippets to adhere to so I could have fun with a game. The whole gamescore thing is like the equivalent of " Who's got the biggest balls?". But unfortunately when the system is broken by game developers that give you achievements for nothing other than start a game up, than even "Who's got the biggest Balls" analogy doesn't even work here. More like "Who's the biggest loser to rent King Kong and pad there score??"

Now some would argue that it's not the score just the virtual attaboy-ness of it. In that regard I can see that. My kids flip out like monkees in heat when they see that gray blimp and they could care less about their score. But if we must have them at least remove them from Multiplayer Modes. They're ruining games for people who just want to play a game online for fun. When Gears came out before they patched the game..you had online RANKED rooms just full of losers choreagraphing matches just to get achievements. This has become more and more prominent now.

When you have teamplay modes online and you can't even enjoy them because some loser wants to receive an individual Achievement it sucks to high heaven. But really I can't even fault the people who do this too much. It's the game developers who actually cripple their own online modes by including these moronic achievements in their own multiplayer modes. What are they thinking??

Thankfully you got games stepping up and removing them from multiplayer altogether. Call of Duty 4 doesn't have any Achievements for their online modes. Good for them. Halo 3 does though but they have them at a paltry 5 points apiece. But really they should just get rid of them.

Am I the only one that thinks they need to be gone from Multiplayer??

Is this post awesome? Vote it up!

I think achievements need to be gone from everything. My achievement is being good at the f*cking game and having fun. That's it!

Im reading this later, but I'll have you know that there have always been assholes that play games with certain strategies (sniping, camping, rocket launching, etc.) before achievements.

I'm a big believer in the achievement system, but I whole heartedly agree with you that they need to limit or eliminate the MP ones. At least shape them in a way that earning them means you have to play within the spirit of online/competitive play.
Wasn't there supposed to be one on Turok that got changed because it dealt with a team kill/suicide/enemy kill? They need to be smart about it. It's a great idea, but someone always finds a way to fuck up a good idea.

I was just thinking today that multiplayer achievements were kind of a bitch.

While I think achievements are fun in the sense that, sure, I may play a level I've beaten to get an achievement I missed, but I'm not gonna whore multiplayer, put my team out to get 10 grenade kills, or even PLAY multiplayer if I don't feel like getting schooled in the latest FPS I'm no good at.

I think achievements offer a certain degree of replayability to single player modes that multiplayer modes inherently have already. So, yeah, I concur. Fuck 'em!

True but most of them are in Lone Wolves though so you're basically fucking yourself over by going solely for achievements.

I do agree that they need to do Achievements like COD (no MP achievements) or Halo (Achievements for MP range from 5-15, and are only 250/1000 of what you can achieve)

Yeah, it's hard to argue against single player achievements (I think they're fun) but multiplayer only achievements can eat a dick.

I thought the 'Achievements' were worthless at first too...But they actually got me replaying games a second or third time. They add a real replay value to some games. When MS announced this I was in the "who gives a fuck?!" camp. But after 2+ years I've grown to like them.

They should learn what Call of Duty 4 has taught us: make someone learn how to play the damn game and do the objectives in order to succeed instead of doing stupid crap.

I'm not an achievement whore in the sense that I want a big number, but I try to get all the realistically attainable ones for all the games I buy. I see it as an extra little challenge to keep you playing after you've beaten a game. I like em. And if anyone thinks their high number means they are better I just completely disregard that person.

Multiplayer achievements can present a bit of a problem where people are ignoring the main goal of the game (to win) in order to do some little side quest which ends up screwing your team. This does suck, but in all honesty I have rarely seen this happen. Maybe I'm just lucky, but I really don't see MP achievements as something that destroys games or makes for a less fun experience.

I'm not a big fan of achievements in general, but I definitely hate the idea of MP achievements. Unless they are done really well, they do often lead to people ignoring the point of whatever game it is and focusing on pulling off some inane goal...

I'm fine with simple player achievements but I'm glad that there aren't any in COD4 multiplayer because then people can just have fun with the game and level up their class.

Achievements have been a focus of my gaming experience on the 360... I refuse to do the things you talk about above... so I miss out on Achievements. For that reason... I hope they remove MP Achievements

MP is SUPPOSED to be where you show off skill, coordinate team play and enjoy friends... If you waste your time Achievement Hunting in MP you waste everyones time.

I think they can work if they're not entirely based on ranked games. If the ranked games achievements mean "get 50 kills in death match" then I'm fine with that.

Halo 3 has them like that. They're all mostly in free for all games. The rest are appropriately placed so that they don't hamper your playing.

I also like them when they help you learn a skill.

My hard work towards getting 5 sticks in free for all games really improved my abilities.

I agree with most of the rest of the people who have been commenting on here. As a PS3 owner, my first experience with “achievements” was in Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune, which has its own reward system built in (example: get five headshots in a row, unlock stuff). I thought that was great. But multiplayer achievements are awful, in my opinion. Call of Duty 4 has a ton of its own multiplayer feats to perform, but you can’t rig stuff because they all have to be done in ranked games, so unless you get an entire party of your friends, I don’t think it’s going to happen.

On an unrelated note, A History of Violence was awesome.

I agree with Mp and Sp and I can say I did this with Battlefield 2.

Getting the 15 minutes in a boat/tank/helicoptor is stupid so what did I do? I grabbed my little rubber dingy and drove around the edges of the map for 15 minutes to get that shiney medal. I never when for the other medals and no longer play BF2.

I would also like to add 1 more thing (since I am a bastard and feel the need to defend the 360 a little)...
There are far more folks out there who aren't out to farm achievements and gamerscore than those that are. My score is over 28k and I can say I have never gone out of my way to get an achievement if it was in direct conflict with winning. There are plenty of assholes, but I think there are more good than bad. Then again, I'm a liberal.

I really like the achievement system, it has given some games an incredible amount of replay value. Normally i'd beat a game and never look back, unless it was a really good game than maybe i'd play it a year or two later. I'm not a huge fan of the multiplayer achievements but thats because i'm not a huge fan of multiplayer. Well i'm not a huge fan of being part of a team, and I don't like talking on Live. I played some of Gears online talking only when absolutely necessary, got a couple achievements. I got The Orange Box the other day and I will never touch TF2 because I know it would require me to talk, and I don't want to go in and be the dick who isn't "with" the team. So in summary free for all multiplayer types-achievements in, team types-out.

I enjoy Achievments for the same reasons some mentioned (replayability, switching up tactics, etc.) but I agree they suck in multiplayer games. The real assholes come out of the woodwork to get 'em some points instead of just playing for fun. That's why I like CoD4 and the fact they removed actual Achievements from the multiplayer portion of the game.

Achievements and any kind of awards, Leaderboards, etc. should be out of almost all online MP games.

@B-radicate
I actaully think COD4 is the worst, even w/o achievements, youve got all the camos and golden guns.... then when people are done and have everything they can, they do 'prestige' and start all over again... pointless.

@Klytus:

How exactly does unlocking camos and guns by doing the 'challenges' screw up the game? I mean, you have to earn them by playing, getting kills, and winning. As for the prestige mode...I mean, it just adds a bit extra for those who wish to do it. I can'e see how any of that could adversely impact the game or the competitiveness in matches.

I have so many games with multi where all those achievements remain untouched, I don't like them at all, they usually require some incredible feat and its something I don't care for.

I did prefer Gears as it was before though, every single game I've played on Ranked allows me to join with friends, not Gears and its in a pain the ass, you go into rank and you have no choice but to pair up with strangers in EVERY FUCKING RANKED MATCH, you get saddled with a shitty game and you're fucked, that's if they don't quit as it happened to me many, many times which caused me to just not play ranked ever again.

Prestige is just a big dick waving contest, "Look at me at I play the game more, I am cleary better", yes look at you, you have so much free time on your hands.

Although some people have that KILL mindset no matter what, I used to play Gears with a guy who always go for the kill and ignore you, he could have plenty of time to revive you and go for his kill but he never would.

I boosted all the Halo achievements, it sucks they unlock armor, why can't they give me everything via beating it on legendary?

@Kyousuke Nanbu:
There are certain games, like halo 2&3/GoW where the maturity level needs to get factored in and offsets searching for games.

I'm sure there are many kids in the 12-19 range that play both these games I speak of. And I know it sucks when youre the "leader" (by which I mean oldest) on a team filled with the hormonally challenged. I was lucky enough that when I got XBL I fell into 2 groups...Played with late 20s early 30s brits (men and women), and Americans that were mid 20s to early 30s. (these 2 groups still makle up 70% of my friendslist. Maybe I was lucky and found people I was cool with, and I could play with. play to win, but everyonce in a while it would be pick on (GX) night. So over the course of an hour we had team slammed him and laughed, then stopped, and resumed when you could see he was a bit more comfortable. fun stuff. Never malicious....I think A huge part of it is finding guys and chicks you can deal with on an intilectual level even if they might be ok at some games. As long as were having fun, it didnt mattered. that carried over to the 360 with us all....Although I will say that if God ever felt like hookin me up, get me Midtown Madeness 4!

I feel the need to defend King Kong here, since nobody else did. I think the game is great, yes its linear and the graphics are next gen but the combat is fun, the game is very cinematic and its easy to find on the cheap. The fact that getting 1000 achievement points out of it is easy is just icing on the cake.

I so agree with you as well. Achievement don't really end up prving anything except that you might be playing the game for the wrong reasons. I can't tell you how many people I've come across trying to get their "mongoose mowdown" achievement. I make sure I'm not assisting them in it *reloads*. And osme games achievements ask for way too much, for example: F.E.A.R. http://www.xbox360achievements.org/achievements.php?gameID=122

Yeah, I'm not going out of my way to get them.
