What's my NAME ??
Y0j1mb0 | 4:55 PM on 05.13.2008 45 comments

Let me formally introduce myself. My name is Francisco Rodriguez and if you were to see me on the streets I wouldn't catch your eye much. Unless you have a fetish for old Hispanic guys with epic white beards, and rather wild wavy hair. There's nothing really special about my name either, aside from it sounding ethnic but in actuality Francisco in Spanish circles is as plain as John, Steve, Jim and Dennis. My last name is probably shared with 75% of the Hispanic population.

So when it fell upon me way back when what to call myself in an online forum/log in, I thought long and hard about a new name to encompass and reflect my existing personality as well as bring to light, through an alias, an untapped part of myself that would never have been if not for this opportunity to rename myself. As a matter of fact, I thought to myself how many people have used aliases to do that very thing.

If you think about it, quite a few people change their names, from actors, to musicians as it
allows the artist to re-invent himself and his sound, sometimes the result can be great and other times it's just an outlet for something darker to emerge. It's not surprising to see these alternate names to be adopted by authors and just normal folk as well, through pseudonyms, aliases, nicknames, working names, legalized names, pen names, noms de plume, maiden names... etc.

Your name is mine until services rendered.

Notable authors with pseudonyms are a plenty but here are but a few.

Poe, Edgar Allan
[Hans Pfaal, Quarles]

Lovecraft, H(oward) P(hillips)
[Laurence Appleton, John L. Dunne, Harry Houdini, Humphrey Littlewit, Archibald Maynwaring, H(enry) Paget-Lowe, Richard Raleigh, Ames Dorrance Rowley, Theobaldus Senectissimus, Edward Softly, Lewis Theobold Jr., Albert Frederick Willie, Zoilus]

Somehow it doesn't surprise me Lovecraft had this many..

Hemingway, Ernest
[Morgan Llywelyn]

Stephen King-
[Richard Bachman, John Swithen]

Dean (Ray) Koontz
[Paige, Robin]

I remember picking my alias y0j1mb0 almost immediately. Being an Akira Kurosawa fan and loving Toshiro Mifune's depiction of his character in the movie of my namesake, a character aloof, with hidden honor and conniving, his character's name had to be adopted by me. A funny thing happens when you use another name and that's online either here in Destructoid or in online fisticuffs with your friends on LIVE or PSN, that's your name forever more. If you introduce yourself to them as such, your branded with the name.

Life in MB is complicated; I created Aliases, killed Aliases, banned Aliases, smuggled Aliases, sold Aliases. Perhaps now, things will be different -- Niko Bellic, Liberty City

I know Taylor Rexford is Shipero. But somehow when I chat with him, or play Stuntman: Ignition with him and god knows what other game, I'll call him Shipero... or Ship. If I were to meet him in person this would be the same. Maybe I'm weird like that. Hell if I went to one of these infamous Destructoid get togethers I don't think I could wrap my head around the idea of calling people their real names.

I think I had the most fun joining The Destructiod Army in Facebook and being shocked by other Dtoiders real names. lol. That had alot to do with this post really. That and thinking am I the only one that thinks like this regarding names and aliases. I started thinking: I wonder why they chose the names they have.. some are pretty self explanatory Br0nxb0mber's name is because he's a Yankees fan.. but what about Takeshi? Or king3vbo? I mean does he likes whoppers that much? And when you really break it down which name do you prefer to be called online in games, Destructoid or in waking life and consider your real name in your head?

Let me formally introduce myself again. My name is y0j1mb0 and I'm a super badass aging video game playing movie watching samurai on a mission to rule the world. And you are?

I'm too much of a pansy to take responsibility for my words. Hence even on facebook to most of you I'm Max Vest, although it's all a lie. And now I can't, won't, and don't know how to come clean.

Until the Ohio NARP. People will still probably call me Max anyway. It's close enough.

I like going by Tubatic. Its ended up being the most unique screen name I've ever come up with, and I'm pretty proud of it.

I'm a tuba player, with a non-descript undergraduate degree to arguably prove it.

I have two names to go with my spilt personalities:
Mix (mixmastaspig) and Saffron (Saffron)

Mixmastaspig was created by moi in grade 8 in a computer class when I was forced to create an e-mail address for class. Saffron was then used in various online games that I play and it started with earth 2025 (hells yeah, farmer tech). I literally sat staring at the blinking icon thinking of various "cool" names I could use or just typed in random words until something came up. (Is there like a size limit on a post or something as this just is not working...)

I've used Shipero since high school, it's the name of the character I always make in wrestling games. Before that I was Spunky, after Rocko's dog as opposed to the personality trait.

manta is just a cool name. I've never really seen anyone else with it (although it's ALWAYS taken when registering for stuff) and it has a cool military-esque feel to it. I first used it for SOCOM on the PS2, so I guess that makes sense.

Not surprisingly everyone asks how I came up with my name....

Back in school we had a TV in out common room in 6th form and I used to bring in my N64 to play games in our lunch breaks. Being in a public (or private to you yanks) school we couldn't exactly use obscene profanities very liberally so we came up with other words and names for insults and for trash talking. Eventually we become associated with a certain insult and those became our gamer names. I became Anus Mcphanus (which meant arsehole) and I thought the name was pretty funny and use it as my online name.

My PSN name CumberlandPrince comes from back in school when we performed the play Macbeth and I played Malcolm "The Prince of Cumberland." It was a bit of an ongoing joke, the prince of cumberland/sausage/cock

I've had several names. HomicidalHamster, Scard, Ravage, Hamster Ninja, The shiz etc. Aborto thefetus was my first gamertag before Microsoft made me change it. I wanted something that would piss people off or would be a reference to something. I went with both by using a character from Fillerbunny. I used it on Destructoid because when I signed up it was still my GT. That, and my other names were kind of lame.

Unfortunately, the pissing people off thing didn't work very well. Only 2 or 3 people really got offended by it throughout the year I had the name.

As for my screen name, well, it's an epic story of me not really caring, hence bleh, man. XBL name is Mikey, which is always fun.

As for MY real name, the hint is in my profile. Throws every gamer off the first time they hear it.

Yeah, I was talking to my IRL friends about this, and they were astonished that I still called Dtoiders I had met IRL by their online handles. I say “Phist” all the time, even though he and I have hung out a bunch of times, and plenty of people called me “Bronx” at the NY NARP. I don’t really mind either way.

Everytime I see your name, I always think of Usagi Yojimbo.

I should really do a post about my name, sometime. I'm sure almost no one cares, but it's got a somewhat involved, multi-layered (who am I kidding?) story behind it. I wouldn't mind rambling about it. I've actually gone by a number of names on the internet, as well as having a different gamertag, but this name is easily the most prominent one I've had.

I liked the write up...It makes sense...I have met a few folks from XBL and it never seemed like I should call them Jay or Steve when that isn't how I know them...Although they would use my name (or at least part of it, as my first name Rocco, and I've always been called Roc, and my XBL tag is BIGROC. I'm 6-3, and I dunno, it just seemed like the least annoying name I could pick...Until I saw how many "Bigxxx" were on XBL.)

I think I was sort of wasted and I figured I'd use Ocified as an internet name (as I had used my XBL tag as most of my MB names) and I play the fuck out of my 360...so...Now that I've rambled, I'm gonna be quiet now...

Did you watch it yet man? I'm curious what you thought of it...

CountingConflict's Avatar - Comment posted on 05/13/2008 19:50
CountingConflict
CountingConflict is a name that I have used since middle-school. Originally used as an alternative to Count On Conflict (which is pretty self-explanatory), it has evolved into something more meaningful. I started studying sociology in college, and Marx's conflict theory was something that immediately intrigued me. Now in my second year of my master's program at the Univ of Houston, I have realized that I am literally a counter of conflicts. I find it kinda strange that I had enough foresight as a child to create a name that could be associated with Sociological ambitions that I didn't develop until only a couple of years ago.

Anyways, that the story of CountingConflict. People also call me the Hulkster or Hulkimaniac, because my last name is Hogan. Conor Hogan.

I think its funny when your talking to real life friends about xbl or other online friends. One of my friends on XBL was named Rabid and when people would ask me about halo or cod4 Id tell them how Rabid and I did and theyd be like "Who the fuck is Rabid?". I know the guys real name but it doesnt feel right using it because thats not how I know him. When people call me Gen (pronounced Jen) in real life it confuses people who are out of the gaming loop because Gen is a girls name. People seem to either understand calling people by their online handles or they think its the most ridiculous thing theyve ever heard.

I guarantee that, with the exception of a few Dtoiders I've gotten to know extremely well, I will call everyone by their aliases at PAX. It just seems more natural, seeing as that's how you address other people in IRC, Vent, and Gtalk.

As for my name? I've used Necros since middle school, when I first created it for a character I wanted to write about. Needless to say, after several years of attempting to write a non-cliche story and using him in a few D&D campaigns, I abandoned the character himself, though I kept the name, since I always liked the sound of it.

When I first went online with it, I thought it was totally original, but it turns out there are a few other people using the name out there, which is why I made up the "last name" Terminus to distinguish myself. Before that, I remember using Antiquor as my last name in a few places before I realized that it was a sucky name and retired it.

Since I decided to go to the Cinci NARP, I've been pondering the same thing. Like, do I introduce my girlfriend as her actual name, or have her create an account here so that she had a pseudonym to introduce her as? Certainly don't want for her to feel left out.

My name comes from a Dutch documentary about witches from the silent film era. The first online game I ever played (ages ago) needed a nickname. It was sitting on my DVD shelf, and I thought that kind of sounds like a Spanish pronounciation of "Jason". And it stuck.

Oh yeah? Well my real name is Liam! Bet you couldn't figure that out huh? But I agree about the names. If I ever go to any NARP or convention when I'm older, I'm definitely gonna call people by their Dtoid name. Except samit. That's much easier to say than his old name.

Also, you've semi-inspired me to change my name here. I chose liam2015 because it's my name on every website I register at. It's just my first name and address combined, and I've been using it ever since I crawled over to the computer and hopped on the web. It's pretty boring in my opinion, but I lack the imagination to think of something myself.

Dynamic Sheep
I've been "Sheep" since grade school... there were these two kids that came up with nicknames for everyone in my little town, and Sheep is what I got. From there, I had to sign up for an AIM screenname. Sheep was already taken, so I had to change it, and I hate the "screenname-random numbers" thing. I thought about it for a while, and remembered my friend smoking some generic cigarettes with a very cool sounding name: "Dynamics". I figured DynamicSheep sounded cool, and felt like it fit me, so it's been my username ever since.

Trailer Park Jesus is the name of one of my favorite songs by one of my favorite bands, Glassjaw.

It's funny because the title has nothing to do with the contents of the song as far as I can tell.

And most of my other online screen names are music related. I guess I like music.

great post man!

my nick comes from the time when I was still a DJ and I played wearing a mask... my name then was 'The Mistic Dj', then NFS came out for PSX ( i think it was the 3rd iteration ) and you could put your name as a licenseplate ( and if you looked really hard you could almost make it out on the screen ), but 'The mistic DJ' was too long, so I just shorted it to mistic, that was when I was 14/15 years or so, now I'm 26 and still using it :-D (never used a different one, just have a different GT on XBLive since my GF and I used to share our account, now she has her own... )

My name is Johan Hin. Johan sounds stupid and German but it's a real common name in The Netherlands. My surname, Hin, sounds supid and Chinese but it is also a common name in The Netherlands.
My dad has got a book with my family tree, my name goes all the way back to about 1300. And guess what, the oldest 'Hin' was a beerbrewer.

As for my Dtoid name:

My PSN name is just Johanhin because Takeshi was obviously taken.

About them Dtoid names, I know the real name of Y0j1mb0, Shipero's and Ha-Puken but when we're chatting on PSN I only use Ha-Puken's real name. Jimbo is Jimbo and Shipero is Shipero (although I love his real name).

Big Z
For a few years I'd used Ziekfried as my alias until a friend of mine suggested I come up with one "that wouldn't link to a product when Google searched." Refusing to abandon the Z, the character Zefnex Bellarus was born. Regardless of the incarnation he takes on for the given universe, Zefnex is a well-spoken barbarian who can hold one hell of a grudge but isn't particularly bloodthirsty. Big Z is, to me, easier to memorize than the proper noun, so I've been using that a bit lately. If you've seen me on Team Fortress 2 I go by Furious Z.

Like Sharpless, I've got quite a bit more backstory to the character than this, but I won't bore you with it.
