Let me formally introduce myself. My name is Francisco Rodriguez and if you were to see me on the streets I wouldn't catch your eye much. Unless you have a fetish for old Hispanic guys with epic white beards, and rather wild wavy hair. There's nothing really special about my name either, aside from it sounding ethnic but in actuality Francisco in Spanish circles is as plain as John, Steve, Jim and Dennis. My last name is probably shared with 75% of the Hispanic population.
So when it fell upon me way back when what to call myself in an online forum/log in, I thought long and hard about a new name to encompass and reflect my existing personality as well as bring to light, through an alias, an untapped part of myself that would never have been if not for this opportunity to rename myself. As a matter of fact, I thought to myself how many people have used aliases to do that very thing. If you think about it, quite a few people change their names, from actors, to musicians as it allows the artist to re-invent himself and his sound, sometimes the result can be great and other times it's just an outlet for something darker to emerge. It's not surprising to see these alternate names to be adopted by authors and just normal folk as well, through pseudonyms, aliases, nicknames, working names, legalized names, pen names, noms de plume, maiden names... etc.
Your name is mine until services rendered. Notable authors with pseudonyms are a plenty but here are but a few. Poe, Edgar Allan [Hans Pfaal, Quarles] Lovecraft, H(oward) P(hillips) [Laurence Appleton, John L. Dunne, Harry Houdini, Humphrey Littlewit, Archibald Maynwaring, H(enry) Paget-Lowe, Richard Raleigh, Ames Dorrance Rowley, Theobaldus Senectissimus, Edward Softly, Lewis Theobold Jr., Albert Frederick Willie, Zoilus] Somehow it doesn't surprise me Lovecraft had this many.. Hemingway, Ernest [Morgan Llywelyn] Stephen King- [Richard Bachman, John Swithen] Dean (Ray) Koontz [Paige, Robin] I remember picking my alias y0j1mb0 almost immediately. Being an Akira Kurosawa fan and loving Toshiro Mifune's depiction of his character in the movie of my namesake, a character aloof, with hidden honor and conniving, his character's name had to be adopted by me. A funny thing happens when you use another name and that's online either here in Destructoid or in online fisticuffs with your friends on LIVE or PSN, that's your name forever more. If you introduce yourself to them as such, your branded with the name.
Life in MB is complicated; I created Aliases, killed Aliases, banned Aliases, smuggled Aliases, sold Aliases. Perhaps now, things will be different -- Niko Bellic, Liberty City I know Taylor Rexford is Shipero. But somehow when I chat with him, or play Stuntman: Ignition with him and god knows what other game, I'll call him Shipero... or Ship. If I were to meet him in person this would be the same. Maybe I'm weird like that. Hell if I went to one of these infamous Destructoid get togethers I don't think I could wrap my head around the idea of calling people their real names. I think I had the most fun joining The Destructiod Army in Facebook and being shocked by other Dtoiders real names. lol. That had alot to do with this post really. That and thinking am I the only one that thinks like this regarding names and aliases. I started thinking: I wonder why they chose the names they have.. some are pretty self explanatory Br0nxb0mber's name is because he's a Yankees fan.. but what about Takeshi? Or king3vbo? I mean does he likes whoppers that much? And when you really break it down which name do you prefer to be called online in games, Destructoid or in waking life and consider your real name in your head? Let me formally introduce myself again. My name is y0j1mb0 and I'm a super badass aging video game playing movie watching samurai on a mission to rule the world. And you are?

Obvious; Mark Twain, Lemony Snicket
Also, no one knows who I am. No one. I'd like to keep it that way.
I know you're a sadist, and thats all that matters to me
Until the Ohio NARP. People will still probably call me Max anyway. It's close enough.
I'm a tuba player, with a non-descript undergraduate degree to arguably prove it.
I bring the pudding to all the gamers in the yard.
Mix (mixmastaspig) and Saffron (Saffron)
Mixmastaspig was created by moi in grade 8 in a computer class when I was forced to create an e-mail address for class. Saffron was then used in various online games that I play and it started with earth 2025 (hells yeah, farmer tech). I literally sat staring at the blinking icon thinking of various "cool" names I could use or just typed in random words until something came up. (Is there like a size limit on a post or something as this just is not working...)
Back in school we had a TV in out common room in 6th form and I used to bring in my N64 to play games in our lunch breaks. Being in a public (or private to you yanks) school we couldn't exactly use obscene profanities very liberally so we came up with other words and names for insults and for trash talking. Eventually we become associated with a certain insult and those became our gamer names. I became Anus Mcphanus (which meant arsehole) and I thought the name was pretty funny and use it as my online name.
My PSN name CumberlandPrince comes from back in school when we performed the play Macbeth and I played Malcolm "The Prince of Cumberland." It was a bit of an ongoing joke, the prince of cumberland/sausage/cock
Unfortunately, the pissing people off thing didn't work very well. Only 2 or 3 people really got offended by it throughout the year I had the name.
As for my screen name, well, it's an epic story of me not really caring, hence bleh, man. XBL name is Mikey, which is always fun.
As for MY real name, the hint is in my profile. Throws every gamer off the first time they hear it.
I should really do a post about my name, sometime. I'm sure almost no one cares, but it's got a somewhat involved, multi-layered (who am I kidding?) story behind it. I wouldn't mind rambling about it. I've actually gone by a number of names on the internet, as well as having a different gamertag, but this name is easily the most prominent one I've had.
I think I was sort of wasted and I figured I'd use Ocified as an internet name (as I had used my XBL tag as most of my MB names) and I play the fuck out of my 360...so...Now that I've rambled, I'm gonna be quiet now...
Did you watch it yet man? I'm curious what you thought of it...
Anyways, that the story of CountingConflict. People also call me the Hulkster or Hulkimaniac, because my last name is Hogan. Conor Hogan.
As for my name? I've used Necros since middle school, when I first created it for a character I wanted to write about. Needless to say, after several years of attempting to write a non-cliche story and using him in a few D&D campaigns, I abandoned the character himself, though I kept the name, since I always liked the sound of it.
When I first went online with it, I thought it was totally original, but it turns out there are a few other people using the name out there, which is why I made up the "last name" Terminus to distinguish myself. Before that, I remember using Antiquor as my last name in a few places before I realized that it was a sucky name and retired it.
My name comes from a Dutch documentary about witches from the silent film era. The first online game I ever played (ages ago) needed a nickname. It was sitting on my DVD shelf, and I thought that kind of sounds like a Spanish pronounciation of "Jason". And it stuck.
Also, you've semi-inspired me to change my name here. I chose liam2015 because it's my name on every website I register at. It's just my first name and address combined, and I've been using it ever since I crawled over to the computer and hopped on the web. It's pretty boring in my opinion, but I lack the imagination to think of something myself.
It's funny because the title has nothing to do with the contents of the song as far as I can tell.
And most of my other online screen names are music related. I guess I like music.
OK, imposter Lemon is a real guy, but what about name/avatar infringement on the interwebs? If Mack West showed up with a Bruce Dickinson avy, I'd have to beat him for taking things that I stole first.
I picked RobotFart for my Dtoid name simply because I wanted a name that was as random and ridiculous as possible.
my nick comes from the time when I was still a DJ and I played wearing a mask... my name then was 'The Mistic Dj', then NFS came out for PSX ( i think it was the 3rd iteration ) and you could put your name as a licenseplate ( and if you looked really hard you could almost make it out on the screen ), but 'The mistic DJ' was too long, so I just shorted it to mistic, that was when I was 14/15 years or so, now I'm 26 and still using it :-D (never used a different one, just have a different GT on XBLive since my GF and I used to share our account, now she has her own... )
Hello. My name is Francisco Rodriguez, you killed my father, prepare to die.
Well its animate + materia = animateria
Mainly due to my love for animated material, or animation.
Well I guess I didn't need to write it the second time.
I don't particularly think it sounds good but I've been using it for years, and I want to keep it that way.
Though I guess, somebody beat me to the chase on youtube. Meh.
I used to go by Anduril because I'm a big Lord of the Rings fan as well and all the computers on our old network were named after the swords from the books. Nerdy, I know.
I was originally called Poetic Justice (still am in the forums) after figuring it as a rap name but I decided to shorten it to Justice because it sounds better and it pretty much is what I stand for.
My dad has got a book with my family tree, my name goes all the way back to about 1300. And guess what, the oldest 'Hin' was a beerbrewer.
As for my Dtoid name:
My PSN name is just Johanhin because Takeshi was obviously taken.
About them Dtoid names, I know the real name of Y0j1mb0, Shipero's and Ha-Puken but when we're chatting on PSN I only use Ha-Puken's real name. Jimbo is Jimbo and Shipero is Shipero (although I love his real name).
Like Sharpless, I've got quite a bit more backstory to the character than this, but I won't bore you with it.
Mine came from what people have called me thought out my life
Original name-Musharraf
Nickname-Mush,Mushy,Mushman,Mushro, Wushi
Forums/D-toid name Mushman, Mushy
PSN(all welcome to add me) mushmania101
and, yeah youre right, you do find yaself wondering what's behind all those alias's on D-iod, and what peole are called
I suck at making up nick names. I wish I could have made something cooler and original...
