It seems the new trend in blogging is being hard. Read the majority of the blogs out on the net and essentially it boils down to people trashing this or that about something mundane relating to games. Let's blow something out of proportion and go on a self indulgent rant. Let me show you how cool I am by ripping on something in an eloquent sardonic way. It's like some bloggers are itching to find some fault in something so they can practice their shit kicking writing skills on the world at large. Trends come and go but hating on something popular as it was pointed out to me in a recent blog, has always been in. Who would of thought?
Here's another new trend or at least one I've recently noticed. Glorifying a good if not great game as the second coming, practically jerking off the developers of said games with an unsettling amount of press or attention and then when the game is out on the market say about two to three weeks do a complete about face and start saying how it's not all that or special. From
Such and such game is unbelievable to
Why you shouldn't believe the hype to finally
The game is not all that. This from the same talking heads mind you. I guess contradicting yourself blatantly is another sign of being cool.
Recent affairs like Game Daily rating
GTA IV a "10" then writing up a piece titled: "Why we stopped playing GTA IV" are not just a perfect example of this ( Picked up quite well by our own Wardrox ) but it solidifies the label most blogging sites get slapped on as nothing more than fluff or a a distant echo of a real gamesite with bloggers instead of journalists.
But let's be fair. We do it ourselves too. How many times has a game come out and all you see in the Cblogs is how EPIC and JAWESOME it is by almost all and then after everyone has gotten it or played it a bit, the game really wasn't all that. It was over hyped, Meh or O.K. It's a pattern that plays itself out like clockwork. The latest one is GTA IV.. the next one? Metal Gear. After that whatever hot new game is coming in the horizon. But know that this cycle of contradiction will never die. It happened with
Bioshock,
Super Mario Galaxy,
Halo3 you name the game and I assure you its been through the proverbial wash of up and down by the majority.
It's like because you have ADD and can't bother to commit to a game and finish it before moving on to the next, we must label said game:
"It sucks" or
"It wasn't anything too special"
Perhaps credibility is a lost commodity in this day and age. Or it's just harder to discover among all these sites and bloggers who tend to be always angry. Always trying to be hard when it suits them. I'll admit that a good rant can be quite entertaining to read as well as write ( as I'm illustrating right now ). But a form of consistency should at the least be employed. Perhaps there's an underlining coolness of blogging contradiction that I'm not getting. It has to be because it seems like all the cool kids are doing it lately.
Where possible, I'm going to try to call more sites on this in future. It happens all the time, and it gives the rest of us a bad name.
Haze anyone?
lol
And lemon is right, it's already June.
What did people expect?
GTA4 did blow me away in the beginning, because I hadn't really seen all that much form the game before I started it up. But now it just look like "oh yeah, GTA". You get used to anything :)
Actually, it's pretty overrated and doesn't contain enough pictures. Plus, the guy writing it had to shave his beard.
But I wouldn't exactly call it contradicting yourself. Like Liam said, it's more like changing your opinion. I think that's allowed, as long as you didn't make declarations about anything before you've experienced the game, which happens sometimes. But that brings me to my last point.
I guess it makes for a more interesting read for bloggers to pull themselves towards one extreme (this game is hella-awesome/super-sucky) than to be so blah bout it.
Being over dramatic and emphatic sells.
Also Jimbo, Frailty is incredible and I thought I was the only one who had ever seen it. To this day I will not drink Hamm's because I am afraid of seeing demons.
Its tricky, because negativity on the internet really draws people in, either to join in the flamage, bitching whining, or at least to figureout what's going on. And ultimately, getting a discussion going is the only way to win on the internets.
I don't talk much trash. If a game is crap I stop playing it and don't waste my time bitching about it on the internet. Then again, I don't feast upon leaked info for games I anticipate -- I'm one of those "must not be spoiled" people even regarding shooters.
I agree with you, though. People get all wound up about shit before it's even out; it's okay to be excited, but jeez, don't go calling every game worth a play the next greatest thing.
1. Don't slag off or praise anything I've not actually played. I can have doubts or high hopes, but I'll always reign my judgement in.
2. Be honest. I'm still playing GTA IV and I'm still loving it. I know other people have tired of it or it never lived up to their expectations. But I love it.
Frankly I don't find reacting against hype or excessive vitriol impressive.
