I've always liked the Grand Theft Auto Series even though I basically never finished any of their games. About halfway through I would just grow frustrated with a mission and just start being a homicidal psychopath killing everything that walked. So imagine my surprise that Rockstar's newest iteration of their popular series, actually has me by the balls. It's safe to say I'm going to finish this game.. hell I don't want to finish the game for awhile. I think I'll savor it. You Speedy Gonzales bastards can go on ahead and race to the finish line. Me, I'll chill with this bad boy for quite awhile.
I also thought that the multiplayer would be a mediocre affair as well. A tacked on, barely thought of or implemented slice of multiplay ala forgettable affairs like The Darkness and Turok . Imagine my utter shock that Rockstar's multiplayer modes are ridiculously addictive and FUN. Folks the multiplayer is sooo GOOD I can see it taking me away from the single player mode of the game which I thought was the highlight of the game and now I'm having second thoughts, compared to their online shenanigans.
I know that sounds like crazy talk but it's true. Last night Balth, Shipero, Ponyboy and a few others I can't remember and yours truly decided to play a few matches of a little multiplayer mode called Cops n' Crooks. The object of the mode is quite simple: As a Crook all you have to do is get to your extraction point, a Helicopter or Speedboat, and escape. Your job as a Cop is equally simple: stop them at any cost with extreme prejudice. As host you can change a slew of options for this and any other game mode, including weather effects to having GPS enabled.
Keep in mind the whole game world of the single player is still the backdrop in this mode, with pedestrians in tow as well. Keep also in mind I was just going to drop in for a few matches before I hit the hay. Well four hours later I had to pry myself away from multiplayer or I wouldn't of stopped playing!! From rolling together in a cop car chasing Shipero and his crew, all the while Balth driving BADLY to me shooting out the passenger side.... it was a FUCKING BLAST. Exchanging gunfire, running over pedestrians, grabbing an RPG and blowing away copters it just didn't get better. The chase was the thing that was just awesome. Also NO LAG. The city is alive , we are busting caps at each other, voice chat going, radio stations going, traffic going, the graphic engine the same as the story mode and still NO LAG. Holy SHIT.
Even when we had it where when you die you jump in spectator mode that shit was cool. While in spectator mode you can do the usual change the cameras around and the person you want to follow but you still have the radio station on and change the stations. And it's presented in a very cool super widescreen mode that reeks slickness. Not only that but the more you play, the more money and clothing options are available to your online character. Seriously I was floored by the quality of the multiplayer. If you haven't experienced chasing some crooks on the heavily populated streets of Liberty City, getting your gun off while listening to Dirty New Yorker by Mobb Deep featuring Havoc & PRODIGY FRON H.N.I.C. you're doing it wrong.
P.S. for my PS3 Mafia this has officially taken the Warhawk slot on PS3 Friday Night Fights.
( Warhawk will still be played on Wednesday Night Warcawks...that is if Shipero doesn't change it to Wednesday Night GTA IV. )
Also , Because we all can use some FUNK in our dreary lives..just click and drag to IF99 Bro.
My god its no wonder the game is breaking "ocarina of time" in a "cap your knees" type style. Truely a pleasure reading this as it really convinces me that i did the right thing slapping my name on the waiting list.
My favorite part of the night was when ponyboy and I were chasing you down in a cop car. You took off on foot down a hill and I drove over the edge in hopes of catching you before you managed to get another car. Somehow I instead managed to land right on top of you. Now that's street justice.
Man, have you tried playing Team Mafiya Work? It's fucking amazing. There's this huge event happening in Chicago tomorrow that I have to check out, but if it's lame and I get home early enough, I'm gonna try to meet up with you guys for FNF GTA.
Like you, I never finished a GTA game, nor did I care about the stories, I just liked screwing around. So far in this one I actually give a shit about the main character's story and for the first time plan on sticking it through. I haven't even touched multiplayer yet, but it sounds all kinds of awesome, so I'm thinking this weekend.
I've been listening to 99 a lot actually. I started out sticking to LCHC and the rock one, but the funk station fits great when cruising around...
Nice CBlog. I'm struggling to find many faults in the game that aren't just nitpicking, the story is absolutely superb so far, totally hooked on it. And I LOVE the mobile phone - I thought it would suck, buts its genius.
wow. great post man. I have only played a few MP matches but the awesomeness is almost too much to take in. I cant pry myself away from the SP but am looking forward to getting in on some cops and crooks.
Last night was the most fun I've had with a game in a long time. I seriously couldn't stop giggling like a little school girl. And again, props to Shipero for the car-crushing death of Yojimbo. That was priceless.
I was so immersed in the single player last night I saw the invite but decided to stay in single player for the night, sounds like you guys had a blast though. I'll definatly be joining you all on Friday for this.
Yeah I found free mode to be exciting as well. My friend Adrian and I were teaming up on some motherfuckers. There was a point last night where the cops were the only thing that could even touch me. (which is still kinda BS considering they were killing me from 200 ft away with a shotgun)
I know exactly what you mean. Past GTAs had never held my attention as far as what was going on with the story. I always found it more interesting to just blow stuff up (that's still loads of fun in 4). I'd always just unlock all the areas in the game and stop playing the missions. With this, I'm fucking hooked. Every twist and turn is keeping me interested.
Also, Niko is one the most bad ass video game characters. And I'm not afraid to say that this game is one of the best video games ever.
Hey, I DO drive badly in GTA, I keep expecting the cars to handle like Burnout. Which they don't.
What I truly enjoy is the weight of running someone over, the thud of their head on my hood, the spatter of blood on my windshield, the rumble kicking in as their corpse bounces off the shell of my mobile implement of death.
Plus, watching Yojimbo have a car land on his head is priceless.
Fuck you guys. Liberty City Rock 97.8 all the way, bitches.
Also, I tried accepting multiplayer invites from whoever was sending them on Tuesday morning, but I kept getting a “Could not connect to game provider” error.
i think i got a few invites while i was playing private games with my brother... sorry i didn't respond sounds like i should have. I'm sure i'll be on later tonight i was up all night [on n' off ps3] i have a very bad case of insomnia.
Like you and a bunch of other people, I never finished a GTA, but this one has me too. When the MP works its fun, course the whole setting it up is confusing as hell.
@ B-Radicate : my brother and i were playing private matches [bomb the base, team mafia work] and were earning money and unlocked clothing options. i "leveled" my character once and unlocked i think 4 more hat options 2 or 3 top options 2-3 bottom options and 2-3 skin type options.
I'm with Samit on this one Liberty City Rock 97.8 and LCHC FTW.
Although I must admit I would love to have the soundtrack to Cowboy Bebop when I'm rolling around running away from da coppers! I don't believe they have custom soundtracks you can play off of your hard drive this time around. Perhaps I'll make it happen by pluggin in my zune.
Still need highspeed ;_;
