SSF2T:HD Remix Problems For XBLA ?!?
Y0j1mb0 | 12:32 PM on 01.30.2008 18 comments

While the majority of fighting enthusiasts wait patiently for Capcom's Street Fighter 4 with it's 3-D Graphics and pseudo fighting engine, lying in wait are Legions of fans more excited for the SSF2T:HD Remix coming down the pike. And I'm one of them. Street Fighter IMO should always be 2-D. But this isn't a rant about 2-D or 3-D for the game..it seems that the man behind Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo: HD Remix has admitted that the XBLA game-size limit imposed by Microsoft is causing development problems, sparking concern that there may be differences between the XBLA and PSN versions of the game when it is finally released.

Let's have them tell you:

Capcom is currently working on a HD Remix version of Super Street Fighter 2, to be released on XBLA and PSN at some point this year. Changes include a remixed soundtrack, character rebalancing and completely redrawn 1080p graphics. The game will also come bundled with the classic version of SSF2T for die-hard fans..

Speaking exclusively to VideoGamer.com, SSF2T:HD Remix director David Sirlin revealed that developer Backbone is struggling to fit the new HD graphics into the 150MB Xbox LIVE download limit and admitted that including remixed music as well as the original music is proving "difficult or impossible".

When asked whether the 360 download limit was causing any problems, Sirlin said: "Yes, it's difficult to store so many 1080p graphics in such a small download size. A lot depends on the specific shading that the final art will have, and how well that shading compresses. It also makes it difficult or impossible to include all the original game's music AND all remixed set of music. We're still doing our best to fit within the limit we've been given.."

Xbox 360 owners are sure to find Sirlin's comments worrying. It remains unclear whether there will be any telling differences between the two versions when the game is finally released. Tellingly, Sirlin did not mention any issues with PSN..

In the same interview, Sirlin also detailed major misgivings with the d-pad of both the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation controllers, citing both as influencing factors behind the decision to make some special moves in SSF2T:HD Remix more forgiving..

Sirlin said: "In my opinion, one of the worst ideas inflicted on the Shoryukening gaming public was Sony's idea to turn the d-pad into four buttons with no diagonal piece. I hated it on the PlayStation. I hated it on the PlayStation 2. I hate it on the PlayStation 3. Microsoft's d-pad has a much better shape (including the diagonals) and yet somehow, it isn't any better in practice. There's something amiss about the mechanism underneath the Xbox 360's d-pad that makes it mysteriously imprecise. My final tally is that both d-pads tie for badness..

"This is at least part of the reason why some special moves are more forgiving in SSF2T:HD Remix. You should have an easier time using a d-pad in this game than in other Street Fighters such as SF2: Hyper Fighting, but if you really want to be a pro, my best advice is to get an arcade-style stick. I've been using the Hori DOA and VF5 Xbox 360 sticks throughout the development of the game."

I don't get why Microsoft still has this 150MB restriction still in place. I can see that they are trying to cater to the people who have no hardrive but if they don't allow Capcom any more room they may end up with a gimped version of this potential blockbuster Download.

This news crazy sucks for the 360 people, redrawn 1080p sounds awesome. I am sure they won't take out anything vital to the game.

"We removed all the low punch animations from the 360 version so we could fit in the remixed music"

Gimped Network Games now...

What the hell is up with Microsoft & their Live? They can't do SOOOOO many things, in terms of dev. restrictions. & yet the Xbox Live subscribers are getting nailed. Even after Live Users are shelling out HUGE amounts a cash.

They seem to not have anything to show for it. Except the motto that Live is better than PSN? Watch out Microsoft.... first HDDVD now Live?

Haven't they given a temporary reprieve from this to another game? Castlevania, perhaps?

Despite my being an achievement whore and preferring the 360, I will most definitely be getting this on my PS3 instead. Why you ask? Because the 360 controllers D pad is complete and total shit.

@Einhander:

The first Xbox Live Arcade title to exceed the 50 MB restriction was indeed Castlevania. Remember they had a 50 MB cap before.

The limit has since been increased to 150 MB but Capcom is saying they may need some more elbow room as that might not be sufficient for them.

What Einhander said.

I'm really interested to see how Nintendo handles WiiWare, on a somewhat related note.

"Watch out Microsoft.... first HDDVD now Live?"

I really doubt that restrictions of hardware and memory will be the downfall of LIVE. The user install base is too big now for everyone to just drop their account.

Besides, you'd be surprised at how much Gamerscore matters to most of the xbox community.

50 bucks a year is extremely cheap, compared to paying monthly bills and education, if you pay for that stuff.

150MB is a rather paltry amount, when you think about it. I download larger service packs/system updates than that. That's like 1/6th of a CDROM. A tiny portion of a USB thumb-drive.

I can understand that they use the same network to distribute downloads as that which enables their online gameplay, but c'mon- BUY SOME DAMN BANDWIDTH !!!!!!

They just need dedicated servers, like Playstation. That's why XBOX live should be free.

@Snaileb:

Agreed.

I own 360 & PSN but I find myself getting all my multiplayer games on the PS3. I could care less about achievements but free play I do.

They should just abandon the 360 and ps3 and just let PC gamers download it. Wait what?

Seriously though, thats pretty damn lame. Microsoft better get on this and quick.

I have a strong (meaning whored out my Gamerscore) account on XBL, and all my friends are on it all the time. It's way more accesible than the PSN, and convenient, so maybe that's why I'm on it too.

@shipero : What?

I play all multiplayer games on the 360 because there are more people that have a 360, I'm an achievement whore, and to me multiplayer=FPS and I prefer the 360 controller for shooters.

Yojimbo: SFIV is fucking 2D! It's like Smash Bros., 3D characters in a 2d plane. Or something like that. It's going to be great.

Trust in Capcom, for they have not let us down so far this generation.
