Since when are your opinions better than the man next to you? Are you the end all, be all, of all that is right? I only ask these questions because for whatever reason, if you happen to have an opinion different from the majority you magically are labeled a troll, a fanboy or a fucking idiot. Heaven forbid that for whatever reason, you don't like a game (
or whatever applies ), that someone else or the cool kids love and express it for out comes the personal attacks and accusations you've lost your faculties.
A good example of what I'm talking about can be found right
here. Poor Phantom Spaceman. He's not impressed with Left for Dead and all of a sudden his Public Enemy Number One. I mean I know everybody and their grandma has dibs on a character (
lol ), but this is ridiculous. There's a reason why we have a comment section in our blogs and that's to express our opinions on whatever the topic at hand.
Is it really that hard to disagree with someone and not turn it into a personal attack?
Here's another example, please scroll through the comments till you find mine then scroll down further for Dtoiders telling me that they
knew I would have a long winded review hating on the Dtoid reviewers or how
I need to fuck myself. All because I didn't agree with a review. Really? It's like that? Let me just reiterate that I have been the BIGGEST defender of Dtoid reviews and their reviewers, but there will be times when you'll just plain disagree.
Guess what? It will probably happen again too. We all aren't clones of one another, so feeling different about a game or anything else is only natural. Brad's latest review concerning SOCOM, I don't agree with. That doesn't mean I hate Brad, or think Brad is a douche bag. I just think he got it wrong. Period. That's not me hating on his review, that's me stating my OPINION, just as he stated his in the review.
Just because Phantom Spaceman doesn't like Left for Dead and isn't impressed with it enough to write a "Dibs Blog" doesn't make him a bad person either. I love Metal Gear, he thinks its shit. We disagree but the last thing I'm going to do is tell him how much of a moron he is because I know better. I don't. Different strokes for different folks. Sure we can site different facts to accompany our opinion, that's what we should be doing. Yet it doesn't change the fact that it's still an opinion. While the comments section is there for expressing and sharing them, to debate, shouldn't we be above the personal attacks because we disagree? Aren't we supposed to be above the name calling and retardedness of other sites. Or is that civility only shared with someone who only agrees with you?
Nice work Jimbo, this is something that had to be touched on.
People really need to learn not to take everything so personally. There is always more than one way to view things and just because someone has a different opinion doesn't make them an idiot...unless they're just saying stuff to create flame-bait.
-Gun is fucking awesome in a shitty as all hell sort of way
-Jesus, Fallout 3 has a shitty ending. Horrible, just horrible
-Dibs on his legs
Good post.It's much appreciated.
Grim:
-Jesus, Fallout 3 has a shitty ending. Horrible, just horrible
Go fuck yourself. :D
Here is what your blog should have looked like
Just look at reviews! If a game gets too high of a score the reviewer clearly sold his soul to whichever company is selling it. If a reviewer rates it too low he's just trying to cause controversy or is trying to be edgy. It's never just someone's honest opinion.
It's like gang war. No one trusts anyone, and if that's going to be the case, why read reviews? If all you're doing is trying to solidify your opinion with a review, what's the point? If you played it you obviously know how you feel about it.
I also like it when someone calls out a reviewer by telling them that they need to be "objective." As if being objective is at all possible when reviewing something.
Good Yob Jojimbo.
I really couldn't say this any better myself. Good job sir!
Congrats on your milestone!
You can't have an opinion about something whether it's good or bad. Vexed Alex will always take offense.
There you go.
The Tony Hawk series was excellent for the first 3 games, good during the T.H.U.G. era, and I don't know now, but I'm willing to bet it sucks at this point. I think Gun is a really great game as well. It has some amazing locations that have a great western feel for an open world game. But I would say Red Dead Revolver is a better Western. We need more western games...damnit.
Fallout 3 may be GoTY and one of my favorite games ever, but that does not excuse such a poor ending.
While this is common knowledge to a lot of people, you've got to remember that many others haven't thought about a lot of these things, e.g.: ethics, morals, ideals and opinions, etc, and so they aren't sure HOW to act when someone offers a differing opinion. It just ends up being interpreted as "this person just said you were wrong".
I think age has a lot to do with it. You only think about certain things when you reach a certain age, and it's when you ask yourself those important questions like "Why am I here" and "What do I want?" that you realize that being wrong is just as helpful as being right, because it helps you flesh out your opinions and morals, and the way you think about things.
All in all, I think it's always going to be an issue, but the best way to deal with it is to set a good example. Show the people you associate with that you don't mind being wrong, and that you want to hear their opinions, even if they don't immediately accept yours.
Again, great post Yojimbo! I love your friggen blogs dude.
Yeah, I'm totally with you. If someone doesn't like a game that you like, then fine. That's how the world works. If you can't handle that, then lock yourself in your room and never talk to another person again.
Anyway, very much congratulations on the milestone, you're a fucking blogging machine.
And Phantom Spaceman is a fucking troll.
What really added fuel to the fire was the stuff on his sidebar make it seem he likes to troll for "teh controversies".
PS. Im a japanphile Dtoider from Texas and his gay aggie elitist ass can go to hell.
/Sarcasm on that last bit.
The best thing to do is mock everything and everybody without talking about your own suggestions, or how they are better. If you can do that, and develop the feeling that everybody is lazy and trying to free-ride off your hard work, you could even be an internet Libertarian!
