Am I the only one who is tired of the Sony Needs to Have a Price Cut for their PS3 soap opera?? I must be because this "story" is still going strong everywhere you look. I get it. The PS3 needs to be priced lower in order to sell more. This is some brilliant original advice to Sony and I'm glad it hasn't been said before. I'm quite sure that if the third or fourth time this advice was issued to them didn't work, the tenth one will. Oh but the difference is now game publishers are joining the ranks of others asking for one as well. And you know what? I could care less. I care as much about a price cut for the PS3 as Valve cared about an online petition for L4D2. The opinion of the few just doesn't amount to a hill of beans to the business decisions that companies like Sony ultimately makes. Surely their past actions confirm this. Do we really need to complain further? Hey I like to try to give advice to others that may be beneficial to them. But if they don't accept my advice, no matter how well intended, I'm not going to stalk them so they do. Yeah, there is a recession going on. It would be grrrrreat if Sony would drop the price on its console so others who can't afford it, can. But let's be honest here. If you can't afford the PS3 now will you at say a fifty dollar price drop? What about a hundred? Whats the magic number that a new consumer who couldn't afford it before will consider getting a PS3 instead of groceries or gas or games to their existing console? Who knows? Not me that's for sure. I bought two of them personally. Why aren't people up in arms about the prices of games in this recession? Hell, people buy mediocre games because they're cheap. I'm quite sure if they were reduced across the board, sales would jump. Or how about the controllers for consoles? They're priced as much as a brand new game. You know that shit is marked up. I say we not just criticize the fool hearty business practices of Sony but of other companies as well. Surely Sony isn't the only company that have exclusivity on arrogance? I think Microsoft should have a price cut on their Elites. I think Live should be free but if you must price it hey it should be 19.99 for a year gold membership because of the...y'know recession. While we're at it why not have Nintendo have all their DS games be priced at 19.99. Why do I have to pay more for the perceived good games on the DS? Same with the PSP. How about DLC? If I pay for a full priced game any additional DLC for it should just be free. Times are hard people. I think everybody should throw us a bone... not just Sony. Will this outpouring of my opinion change a damn thing? Will any of these companies really give a crap about what I just said? Uhhh, no. Perhaps if someone in their company say a CEO or PR rep says something retarded or perceived as such, I should reiterate my call to arms for a price cut. The art of repetition can bend wills I tell you. Uhhh, no. In the big scheme of things folks, it just doesn't fucking matter. The only people that that resonates with are the soldiers in the frontlines of the console wars. God bless them. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to do something that does matter...try to win Colette's Neves Plus swag...specifically that t shirt. Maybe I can get Garison to write that haiku thing for me...

The PS3 has already had a huge price cut and is now priced the same as an Xbox Elite... I don't get what people want... do they want a PS3 priced the same as a Wii or the Xbox Arcade?? How the hell do they expect that to happen unless the PS3 cuts out some of the features like the blu-ray drive, the HDD or other features. Wait... they already did this... it's called a PS2.
Ooo, yes please!
I guess the lesson to learn here is that people still perceive that the PS3 is not worth $400 yet. While that might NOT be the case, and I would strongly argue that it's not the case, people perceive it that way. Sony needs to do a better job convincing people that the PS3 is worth $400. Then I think everyone would shut the hell up!!!
YES PLEASE!!
Its a superior system, by far, from an owning consumer standpoint.
Above all else, it doesn't hum like a jet engine.
Totally worth $400, and I'm kind of sorry I hadn't picked one up sooner.
I don't care if they want wireless, included batteries, free online or HD movies... whatever. It's not my job to sell it to them (not that I couldn't do a better job than Sony is now). I don't want an iPhone, but that doesn't mean I throw on some company-branded blinders and pretend that everything in it is useless and that it should cost the same as some throwaway Nokia.
I second the motion that says all Sony need to do is make people aware that PS3 is worth the money - of course the Xbox 360 starts off cheaper but when everything is put together they're roughly the same price. Sony's retarded marketing campaigns are what need sorting out, not their pricing.
Word.
Fingers crossed though: hopefully that rumored software emulation patent pans out.
*goes to download some PS3 hardware*
I think people are just saying it to bandwagon, and Sony hasn't exactly been doing well PR-wise. I do agree that games need to come down in price. I mentioned somewhere else long ago that there are no longer Player's Choice titles in the Nintendo lineup (so I will still pay full price for MKDS today), and it seems that the only games for that system that get marked down are total crap games or ones that didn't sell well. Microsoft and Sony still stick to their Greatest/Platinum Hits, at least.
$60 is a bit much for a game in my eyes. Yes, I'm old enough to remember when SNES games could be up to $75 at certain retailers, but I just don't see it. But I don't have either leet system so my opinion is invalid, yay!
That is a good question and one that people who complain about the PS3's price will have a tough time answering honestly. I'll bet the vast vocal majority are 360 owners who play it a lot and are kinda sorta interested in the PS3. Sony would practically have to give them away to get them to consider one because the 360 is their console of choice now. A personal example, I bought a 60g PS3 a few months after it launched, loved it, still do, and pretty much play it every day. At work a sales contest was going on and I was able to score a free 360 elite. Now if I didn't win the thing I probably wouldn't have bought a 360 on my own. Why? Because the PS3 suits me just fine. I have a total of 3 retail games for my 360. Gears 1 and 2 and Ninja Gaiden. I downloaded Braid and Castle Crashers as well, no I don't have a Live subscription, and I probably wouldn't have bought the cheapest bundle which is what like $250 for the arcade one.
But the thing I find most interesting that people seem to forget is that Sony still loses money for every PS3 it sells. Yes I know not as much as before but still a loss none the less. In business that really doesn't make sense, but Sony can make that money up elsewhere to offset that loss. Unless they can find a way to offset the loss they would incur if they lowered the price even more it doesn't make good business sense to lower the price just because people on the internet think you should.
...but only if there's a price cut. I can't afford to buy it again at these prices, even if it is the best deal for a BluRay player around.
If you want to see discussion about it, why make a blog about it?
Not enough attention from the missus today?
PRICE CUT!
I don't know, looking at Best Buy prices a while back it just looked like they'd be better of with a PS3.
SOME people are just fucking retarded, but I really don't want to get into the whole "PS3>360 N3W8!!!11!ONE!ELEVEN" spiel. Thank god there are people with an excess amount of hair on their chins like yourself to say these things for me.
It doesn't do that, I feel severely chipped.
So here it is: Jackie Brown is such a kick ass movie.
@Aurain
This was a legit blog with lot of content. Personal attacks weren't called for.
Sony did have a good point back when other BR players were above the PS3's price, but as a gaming system, it couldn't fall as hard/quickly as the stand-alone players, so Sony couldn't tout it as a cheaper BR anymore. And it's too bad too.
I'm with Silverdragon on this. The PS3 doesn't need a price cut. What it really needs is better advertisement. You get your moneys worth and then some. People just don't see that though. They only focus on the gaming portion of the PS3 which makes it seem more expensive than it really is. If only people started looking at it as a whole and seeing everything it has, then I think more people would recognize that the current price is very reasonable.
Also, the PS3 currently has a price cut. It's just not an official Sony price cut. I'm looking at you Best Buy Killzone 2 + MGS 4 bundle. Subtract the cost of those games with the cost of the bundle and you saved yourself nearly $100. If those games aren't your cup of tea, then just sell them. But yet people don't use enough common sense and simple math to even notice this.
@Santaclaus89
I think you're on to something. I never even thought of that until you mentioned it.
I recently had to make a decision between selling my xbox 360 an my ps3 for extra cash (which was hard to do considering that I generally like both consoles). After weighing the pros and cons of reach system, it was obvious which console i'd be keeping.
Reliability, BluRay Player, and an awesome PSN community (BRING BACK POKER NIGHTS!!!) = glorious amounts of win
Sure.. I'll miss out on awesome natal gameplay, streaming radio (I WANT THIS), and Twitter (is for cunts... seriously), but I can always buy another 360 later if i really want another one.
400 bucks for 120 dollars worth of games, wifi, bluray, and a wireless controller with rechargeable battery!?! I'm beginning to think that the only people complaining about the price being to high are the same jobless, 13-year-old douches I had to deal with all the time on XBLA...
... oh and Jim Sterling of course.
/facepalm
and saturday night p____r, i'm i writing it or are you? i don't really know if a blog will bring people because its usually just who's online spam them with invites thing.
That said, the main thing that will stop me getting one for quite some time is the lack os PS2 BC and the not too great display format support when dealing with connecting it to a monitor. (I cannot watch DVDs or play PS1 games on a PS3 because of it)
Go out and buy @ blu-r@y pl@yer for $200+ @nd get b@ck to me about the PS3's price point.
People spend like $250 for @ frigging cell phone, @ CELL PHONE!! I think for all the PS3 can do $400 is a fair price. I watch movies from an external HDD, blu-ray movies, music from the HDD it's my main source for entertainment my stinking upconverting DVD player was like $150 so uhhhh yeah :)
An official SKU that's priced the same as the XBox Pro. Especially since you can buy the PS3 FROM SONY for $299 if you sign up for their credit card.
"Do they want a PS3 priced the same as a Wii or the Xbox Arcade??"
A Wii is $250, like I said...that's a $50 difference from the Sony direct price so an official SKU *could* have that price, though impractical.
"How the hell do they expect that to happen unless the PS3 cuts out some of the features like the blu-ray drive, the HDD or other features. Wait... they already did this... it's called a PS2."
Sarcasm fail. Blu-Ray drives are not expensive anymore, we are starting to see stand alone blu-ray drives for $100-$150. Nothing else included in the box is worth what they are charging. We won't see an official SKU price drop anytime soon because Sony is bleeding money on the PS3 console. Dropping any further without a more cost effective design will result in huge losses to the bottom line. However, if you can buy it from Sony for $299...I don't see why the official SKU can't be $299.
I want the PS3 to be a system to play games without all the additional knick-knacks, that's why I wish the PS3 Slim was real, because Sony would not be losing money for every system bought and it would also be cheaper for the costumers. It won't be cheap as a Wii, but maybe as a regular XBOX360 which would be fair enough in my opinion.
"Dear Ferrari,
Please lower your prices so everyone can buy your cars.
Yours with love,
Takeshi"
people didn't get it so I explained
"My point is:
There are certain things people can't buy. Ferrari's, washing machines or consoles. Which is perfectly normal. Mind you, it is accepted for common goods. "I can't buy that expensive but awesome washing machine. I'd best be starting moaning about it on the internet and throw in a couple petitions while I'm at it." People don't act that way with products like that. They suck it up and buy something else.
But if it concerns a console (preferably a Sony one as it seems nowadays) oh boy, people throw a hissy fit and demand a price drop. And start yelling Sony's marketing sucks! (Which is different from this discussion but I wanted to mention it because I think it's pretty sad to hear people complaining about marketing while they know everything there is to know about the console. So how's that bad marketing?)
To sum it all up, there are two options for a consumer.
Get over it or save up.
Yes, it's that easy. The PS3 is worth every penny. I know, I bought it day one for 600 Euro's."
Big surprise! People still didn't get it and continued stating rather absurd things like that if people save 400 bucks for the console they can't buy games.
"That doesn't make sense at all. So people can save 400 bucks and not buy games? Saving money is saving money. People aren't going to save up for a car without tires now are they? So why would you save for a console without games. It's all about priorities. Haven't got enough money to buy a console? Then don't! Or do, like me and eat peanut butter sandwiches for a month. Breakfast and supper.
I agree with Nexus here. We never hear complaints about the 360 pricetag. Which is rather strange it you think about it. There must be a shitload of people that can't afford a 360 or even a Wii. What are you gonna do about that? "But those are a lot cheaper!" Indeed, but still out of reach for certain people.
Don't get me wrong here. People can hope for a price-cut. Nothing wrong with that. I'm hoping the same for all of them. But demanding it, like so many gamers do is preposterous."
So there you have it.
People want everything for nothing, and they want it NOW! The old fashioned way of saving money doesn't seem to be in effect nowadays. Saving up and working hard to buy luxury items is a great way to make you see the value of said items.
This is all I have to say on the matter, I'm not gonna comment on a single article about it anymore. I'm completely done with it. Instead I think I'm gonna play some games on my ridiculously overpriced PS3. With a big fucking smile on my face.
@Aurion
Please kill yourself.
And furthermore, MAKE XBOX LIVE FREE.
Yes I'm being sarcastic.
I agree with Sony making the PS3 actually worth it to me, I've yet to see anything that makes me wanna drop $400 on on it when I can just drop $200 and roughly the same content from a 360.
That goes for you too, jimbo!
Also, they are not ferrari's or opels. They are both cars :P
They drive to you places, that's all. Nothing more.
I think a big problem with the industry is that it has "Hollywood Blockbuster" Syndrome where they make games that are graphically shiny, but underneath the gloss there's not much else to it. I know there are some games that do this really well and can be fun, but right now it feels like having "The best graphics evar." is just a new way of phoning it in and covering up for lack of creativity and unimaginitive gameplay. But they dump all their money into advertising and graphics but don't focus on where it matters, gameplay. Games can be fun as hell and have a lot of replay value without costing the property value of a small third world country to make.
Is it bad that the system doesn't come with HD cables? Sure. Do you know how much an HDMI cable costs on eBay or somewhere else online? Like $4.
This fall I'll likely only buying one FPS and unfortunately for Actiwhore, I'm getting MAG.
IT COMES WITH AN HDMI CABLE.
HD OUT OF THE BOX? BLASPHEMY!
People like you are killing the perfect community that I single-handedly crafted.
Still, I agree with you here, people have been crying that the system was too expensive since it came out and they still managed to sell enough to keep them rolling so as long as they can still milk the cow why would they give it away for beans?
When the price does eventually drop, and it will someday, possibly years from now when we all have flying cars and shit, it will be because some guy at Sony HQ willed it, not because people cried about it.
WOAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!
BUT can I watch my favorite VHS episodes from such titles as: Buffy and my little ponie in HD?
Also my price was in CDN so $179 US = $210 CDN :(
And Canada sucks. I'm moving to Russia.
