Everyday I wake up to the same routine, I get up, get my kids ready to school, make a light breakfast consisting of a bagel spread with strawberry cream cheese, and before I do anything else, I fix myself a cup of coffee ( which ends up being more like three cups ) while I read all the cblogs that you fine folks take the time and effort to create. I may not comment on them all but yes, I read all of them. After I finish reading them, I fix me another round of coffee and read the forum posts. Again I read them all and enjoy them as much as the cblogs themselves. Well while reading the cblogs the other day I read a blog from a fellow Dtoider that started off with this actual quote:
"
I know, short blog is short and I'm aware of which way the forums are but I thought some people would get a kick out of seeing these and obviously more people read the blogs then go to the forums..."
And it got me thinking. Is it true? Is it THAT obvious that more people read the blogs than the forums? I mean I know a lot of Dtoiders self regulate the quality of the blogs by saying the ever cliche
"Forums are that way" tag, like the forums are a depot for one line nonsensical tripe, but is that statement truly correct? It makes it kinda seem like if you read the forums you may catch aids or something.
To me the forums of Destructoid offer a thousandfold more opportunities for intelligent ( and not so intelligent ) gaming debates, a freedom to talk about more topics than the usual, the escape of NOT reading a hundred user reviews of the latest game, and a close to real time engagement to your audience/readers.
I may be off here but it seems to me there is an imaginary divide between cbloggers and forum posters. Is it just me? Or is my impending dementia from being old making me see things? Are the forums barely read by community members? Do the guys down there have aids?
Here are just a few snippets of things missed if you are NOT reading the forums:
Blindside Dork's
Draw a Whore! thread.
Sharpless asking for relationship advice for a newly
acquired girlfriend. He says acquired like he caught a rash or something. LOL.
Nameless Ted's user created Dtoid Card
Pics of community members you may not know:
Who the FUCK is this guy?
Or this dude?
and a trillion other posts that are hilarious, crazy, thought provoking, pic filled, and yes
informative. There is a reason why community members write in your comment section
Forums are that way. They are not trying to be dicks ( unless it's Reaprar...lol ), that's because there is where you will find the answer you seek and there is where you are
supposed to go if you do have a question about anything. Not the cblogs. But it's not a punishment sentence going to the forums ya'll. It's cool down there.
For those that don't frequent the forums, I encourage you to do so. It's a trip down there and there is an air of silliness that is as infectious as it is sincere. I wrote a variation of this blog in a post in the forums. You should take a
look and read some of the comments they posted on the subject as they are enlightening. Engage and break these misconceptions of both the forum posters and the cbloggers. After all, the sum of our parts equal Destructoid itself.
The community blogs, on the other hand, is the retarded, homophobic, racist girl, with the lazy eye who isn't really nice to look at most of the time, but good lord you'd bang in a heartbeat because she knows how to do that one thing with her tongue.
wait WUT
we haz them
unholy mudkipz
The forums are always fun :)
No, it is not just you.
Yeah, I always got the impression that WAY less people checked out the forums, but that's also kind of what I find appealing about them.
I also appreciate the fact that conversations linger a bit more, whereas with the blogs things come and go quickly within 12 hours.
Don't get me wrong, the forums are the lifeblood of Dtoid, of this community, but the c-blogs is where the 'shit' goes down, frankly, they are more entertaining.
You DO make a great point Jimbo, it's just lost on me, for that I'm sorry.
As always, great read!! :)
but I find it hard when most of the forum readers aren't around as much.
Fecking 'ell Jimbo, next time put a warning!!! ;) :)
The forums, at least the ones dedicated to videogames, are full of trolls and other people that the only thing they want is hurt the people that don't think like they do. In the blogs, you can express yourself always with respect and the others, usually respects you in return.
P.S. You got an interesting blog.
You are making them that way."
A winrar is you.
forums are cake compared to the blogs. Post a good intro (read the meet & greet section for examples of good & fail) and you are off and running.
I think everyone should go to the forums and at least give the topics/titles a once over.
And you c-bloggers should hear some of the things they say about you :D
Also note to self: Go to the forums more often...
Yeah the forums do seem like the dorky sister to the cblogs. heck im sure i might have a look now =]
I occasionally drop into the forums, and I know when what I want to say should be said there and I post it accordingly but I just can't get the motivation to go in there everyday.
I don't know if this is a truthful statement, but I guess people can be more creative and expressive on their blogs than on the forums. So I usually prefer reading blogs cause they tend to be heartier meals. Forums are like snacks. Best metaphors ever, right?
Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go have some blog for dinner. Maybe I'll get up around midnight for a quick forum post.
Also, sometimes there's porn in the forums. Gross, spammy porn.
Contrary to what some people may say, community blogs are NOT like forums. It is important to know the difference. If you don't, you're likely to receive the writer's equivalent of being "booed off stage." Destructoid may be a little different from other blogs you've used before because it is a ***SHARED*** community blog -- a singular weblog updated by thousands of people. A lot of people are reading Destructoid this instant. This is a very active community!
What / when should I post in the community blogs?
Community blogging (or c-blog for short) is appropriate when you have enough to say to *publish a complete article* that can stand on its own -- your blog post should be no shorter than a paragraph and pertain to a topic of interest to other gamers. You can also blog about other stuff, just TAG YOUR POST as "Non-video game related" (NVRG) and blog away. In exchange for your work, you will receive immediate reactions readers in a sequential stream. Blogs comments are not the ideal place to have conversations because comments are typically meant for the entire community to weigh in on. Individual conversations are always best left for forums or via private messaging by clicking into a member's profile.
Before you jump into blogging you should begin by reading the Destructoid home page or Community page to get a sense of what game bloggers do, then check out our community rules. When you're ready to blog, just login to Destructoid and look for the "my blog" options at the top of the page. Whatever you write will be read, guaranteed. No pressure! (haha) You can publish anything you like, but remember that you are sharing this site with other gamers. You will have an engaged audience from day one. Since the blog is shared in a stream, its probably not a good idea to publish 10 articles at once. Get your post in, give others time to respond and post, then post some more. You can manage when your posts go live by managing your stories' privacy settings. Don't blow it -- make a good first impression! Don't fail/suck/etc! Already logged in? Try it out! When should I start a thread in forums instead?
Forums are meant to foster active conversations. Forum readers do not expect you to organize or present an opinion, facts, or even cohesive paragraphs per se. This is a place to talk. Have a brief question? Want to make a quick comment on a gaming topic to get a group discussion going? Forums are the best place to do this, because conversations are "threaded" -- you can engage various people individually instead of addressing everyone. Try our forums out!. (Note: your login is the same in the forum, but it requires a login with your username instead of your email address. If you end up creating two accounts by accident please contact us and we can merge them.)"
Both = Win
Cblogs = Win for letting people know stuff.
Forums = Win for discussion. (Also for me building touchy feely relations with other Dtoiders).
But really who cares, enjoy which ever gets your johnson hard in the morning... for me its both (for that extra stiffy).
I have never actually used the forums, and I don't really plan to. I dunno why, it's like they're wearing too much Axe or something.
cut it out.
