If you're like me, a gamer who generally doesn't complete most of the games he gets, there comes a time when you eventually realize two things that you hadn't before. Generally these two things happen in quick succession and almost always in a dry spell of good games coming out at the time.
Number One:
You figure out no matter how good or great the game may be.. you are in the back of your mind looking for that OTHER great game to get but since it's not there you are befuddled, puzzled even, because there is nothing now to distract you from completing the game you are now playing.
Number Two:
You realize you have a shitload of games that you haven't even begun to make a dent at. Games that you should of beaten a loooong time ago but the next great thing came around and you snatched it up and began it, instead of finishing what you started.
Sorry Travis, about leaving you hanging.
When those observations saturate into your brain you may even do what I just did recently..you do a physical count of the games you really should play again and finish. Yesterday I counted mine. I have THIRTY-SIX games that I had begun only to let slip by the wayside, like abandoned children left to fend for themselves. You know what's worse? My head is telling me I need more. Am I mad? Do I suffer from some affliction that makes me spend money on things only to not use or enjoy them to the fullest. If you were to make an analogy to illustrate how ludicrous this is, that's like getting an iron or a club for sixty bucks only to use it once on the golf course and immediately get another, only to keep doing that again and again.
It's not that the games I have yet to finish suck, at least I think they don't, remember I haven't finished them.. that might be a legitimate reason (
might because I have been known to play god awful games for entertainment purposes ). It's just I always do the same thing. Here's a few games from the thirty-six that I haven't committed to fully:
*Persona 3
*Mass Effect
*Oblivion ( specifically the Shivering Isles portion )
*Assassin's Creed
*Call of Duty 4
*Disgaea 2
*God of War 2
*Metal Gear Solid 3
*Metal Gear Solid 4
*Halo 3
*No More Heroes.
*Zach & Wiki
*Super Mario World
*Dragon Warrior VII
*Alien ( fucking ) Hominid
*Hot Shots Golf:Out of Bounds
*Zelda: Wind Waker
Seriously, I could keep going and going but I'll spare you a longer list. My point is that I am stuck in this cycle of procrastination that I have yet to break free from. Only in small pockets of clarity, initiated by a dry spell, do I try to tackle or beat a game shelved prematurely by me.
Is it just ADD on my part? I would chalk it up as such easily but when it comes to other real world tasks and hobbies..i.e. making model airplanes, books and movies, procrastination doesn't rear its' ugly head. At once bizarre and downright wasteful with money I can't put my finger on this.
Do any other Dtoiders here share this disease that's synonymous with procrastination & video games? Am I the only one that blows money on games and don't even give them the proper time before moving on to the next big game to begin anew this never ending cycle again?
I think I may need professional help.
Our lists of neglected games, they are quite similar.
I do the exact same thing
Yeah I would guess less then 25% of my games ever get finished... There's just too many great games coming out :-)
Mass Effect
Lost oydessy
MGS4
GTA4
Pixel junk Monsters
The only games I finish are 10 hour games. My ADD sucks too.
I do the same thing... it's like a collecting disorder. I've got a ton of games that are unfinished, but I'm obsessed with buying more.
I find that it IS possible to finish your backlist, but only if you dedicate yourself to playing one game at a time until finished.
That's a poor way to spend your money... dumbass. But I respect that, because it's your choice to do what you want with your money.
Oh wow, you've read my mind. I'm not buying anymore games until I beat lost odyssey. I have more games that I need to finish i.e.
RBSv2
EDF
Buy Uncharted
But I'm just going to finish off LO and move on from there. I do not want to fall in the habit of not finishing games.
And yes..you have ADD
I have tons, but I generally try to beat most of the games I start, most of the time doing the sidequests and god knows what --
Persona 3 -- will be playing this a second time through as well =/
Lost Odyssey
Final Fantasy III
Ninja Gaiden II
Phantom Hourglass
Games I haven't even started:
Final Fantasy XII
Dragon Quest VIII
several SNES games
a game has to be awesome for me to play it all the way thru. my uncompleted list is substantially longer than completed.
but not completing no more heroes is a crime. you can bang that out in 2 solid sessions. c'mon now!
I have ten games sitting on my desk now, all in various stages of (in)completion. You, sir, are most certainly not alone.
I bought FFX the day it came out and played for an hr then suddenly stopped for 3 years, one summer I went down to Dominican Republic and thought...maybe ill bring my ps2 and some games (yea who wants to stay inside when your in the carribean?...me). talkin bout 80 hrs in a week people...was like a yob but it was great :)
I'm hoping to finish some PS2 and GCN and SNES and DS and Wii and GBA games while my 360 is on it's way to the shop and back.
Wait. Holy crap I still have alot of games to finish.
I have a shit load of PS2 games I never got through and I've hardly put Viva Pinata, Dead Rising, Skate, Motorstorm, Everyday Shooter, Sin & Punishment, Stranglehold, Metroid Prime 3 or Okami in my consoles. I have turned a corner though and have started playing Resistance again...
and people still complain about the summer games drought
I'm the exact same as you. The only games I seem to be able to finish are handheld games and old games that I go back to replay. I have 8 games for my PS3 that I have not finished, and I don't think I've finished any games on my Wii either.
I generally get a game and play nothing but that game for a while until I beat it. Unless it sucks. But recently, the fun I've been having with muliplayer games keeps me from getting into the single play campaigns/story so I just procrastinate and never get them done. And I still want more games!
I think it's just something to do with us gamers. Like a mind numbing plague; You procrastinate because it's your only resistance to the terrible monotony of (some) games that threatens your sanity daily... Like a starving pitbull straining against its never-weakening leash...
Zack And Wiki - sitting right after the first island
CoD 4 - In the first real middle east mission
Assasin's Creed - I'm like 3/4 done
God of War 2 - halfway-ish? Who knows when I'm going back to that
I dunno. Some of these game are "in the mood" sort of games. Others (like AC and GOW2) have a visceral experience that makes me feel like I'm not missing anything by not playing farther. I could see NMH being in that same boat for some people.
I do the same thing. I have a problem with buying games, playing them for a while and then picking up something else instead of just finishing what I have.
Galabug's right though. Just end that joint. :D
I usually play a game for an hour or so before moving on to something new, this leaves me with lots of glares from the misses regarding my gaming purchases as well as leaves a lot to play on a rainy day.
I have about 25 Wii games. The only one I've completed is Lego Star Wars. I've barely touched my VC titles.
I'm not at home, so I can't check my list (might do it later), but I am sure that I can one-up you on the high probability that I have 36 games I haven't even put in my system yet. At least you've started some of yours. Still, I sympathize with the general idea. I wrote something about it here.
I too... am guilty of this.
GTA4 (too repetitive)
Oblivion (I've done a shitload of side missions... none of them being part of the main quest)
Lost Odyssey (The characters are just too... fake and weird.)
Final Fantasy 12 (It sucked anyway, right?)
And that's... actually it. I try to make it a habit to buy games I know I'm going to want to play through and beat. Sometimes, it doesn't always work out as you can see...
36? Pfft. Complain when you reached the retarded status I was at - well over 100. I finally gave up and put about 100 games on eBay since I knew I'd never, ever get around to playing them.
Now that only leaves me around the 30 mark. ;)
I got Star Ocean 3 when that came out, but a break up a week later affected my ability to focus on it. Pokemon Diamond fell to the wayside due to... I don't remember what. Finally, I have Final Fantasy Tactics that was rarely played because I realized I don't really dig strategy games.
You should seriously consider quitting your job. You know, maybe free up some time and finish some of these games. Oh, wait... nevermind.
Totally agree.
Zack & Wiki - stuck at the last level
No More Heroes - shelved b/c Okami
Wind Waker - shelved b/c Wii
MGS: Twin Snakes - shelved b/c Wii
Mario Kart - fuck the AI
Metroid Prime 3 - shelved b/c Z&W
its an endless cycle. =(
your not alone.. i'm in the same boat.
Ah man tell me about it! My "to finish" list is growing :(
I used to make myself finish each game before buying a new one, but it started to make gaming feel like a chore. But I usually finish games unless they get both too repetitive and too frustrating. See:
GTA San Andreas- stuck in flat, boring Las Venturas
Odin Sphere- loved it, but can't see myself spending another 30 hours mixing potions just to revisit the SAME LEVELS over and over
Metroid Prime Corruption- I'm fetching something near the end (imagine that); might end up being the first console Metroid I never finish
Castlevania Dawn of Sorrow- medusa heads, how I despise thee!
I feel no remorse for bailing on FFXII however. Other than I wish I'd done it sooner.
My unfinished games are mostly PS2 games, with some Wii/GC games tossed in. Haven't gotten arounding to hooking it back up.
Rogue Galaxy
Tales of Symphonia
Metroid Prime 3
Super Mario Galaxy
XIII
etc.
Xbox 360
Mass Effect
Portal
Half Life 2 + Episodes
Assasins Creed
Halo 3 - NEVER TOUCHED THE SP
Ninja Gaiden 2
GTA4
NOT COUNTING ABOUT 20 XBLA GAMES
PS3
MGS4
Uncharted
Hot Shots
Pixlejunk Monsters + Encore
Motorstorm
Stranglehold
I know im missing some.....Its sad
I have a ton of games I need to finish... Luckily other than some downloadable games and maybe Soul Calibur IV there's nothing I really want coming out this Summer, leaving me 'til the Fall to try and make a dent in 'em...
its nearly impossible to finish every quest in oblivion
I know exactly how you feel. Sometimes I have to buy games just because I know I'll want to play them later. It's inevitable anyway.
@Ha-Puken
LMAO!!
Yojimbo, at the beginning of the year I had the same problem as you, but one of my "new years resolutions" was to actually beat all the games I had amassed. Who actually sticks to their new years resolutions? Well this year I DID!!!
Unlike everyone else who has presented the list of games they have not beaten, I will now present you all with the list of games that I did beat this year. Behold the shit load of work I did this year.
Games beaten in 2008
- Gears of War
- Metal Gear Solid 4
- Grand Theft Auto 4
- Bioshock
- Assassin's Creed
- Halo 3
- Forza Motorsport 2
- Mass Effect
- Heavenly Sword
Games I have left on my list
- Mario Galaxy
- God of War 2
- N+
Honestly this is exactly why i -want- to obsess over trophies, I'm hoping it'll kinda force me to complete way more games.
Like all of you I have a ridiculously long list of titles I have barely progressed even past the halfway mark. I hate it and I'm surprised theres so many like myself. Mostly due to one of my best friends finishes every single game he has ever had, therefore I thought I had some kind of horrible gaming disease.
Yeah, i gots the disease bad too. At first, like you I chalked it up to ADD, but after much thought I found the two real causes of this affliction.
1. Piracy (romitis anyone?)
2. I have a REAL job, so I just buy all the systems/games that I want. As a youth, I was only able to purchase 3-5 games a year (allowance + gifts), and that combined with video store rentals, and swaps with friends only allowed me to play 12-15 games, (plus all the free time of not having a job), most of which I fully completed.
I suffer the same way. My list consistst of almost everything on my shelf:
Okami - PS2
Persona 3/ Persons 3 FES
Devil Summoner
Odin Sphere
MGS 1 (Twin Snakes), 2 and 3 (subsistence version)
Katamari Damacy
DMC 3 SE
Ninja Gaiden Black
Fatal Frame 1/2 (XBOX)
Breakdown
DMC 4
Phantasy Star Universe
No More Heroes
Killer 7
I realized long ago I'm making up for all the games I wanted as a child but never got.
In short I'm a gaming-consumer whore and i'll finish 'em when i fuckin' feel like it!
I think this has to do with the fact that the idea of a game is always so much more magical than actually having the game in hand. You just need to sit back and realize this. Well, it worked for me anyway. Now I seem to be able to enjoy my games much more fully.
It's because so many good games keep coming up before I can finish the one I'm currently playing. It's a bit ironic.
The trick is to just play a game until you buy another one. There are so many good games lately that it's hardly worth finishing any of them. The games you will enjoy the most are then of course the ones that featuring a dry spell after their release.
List of games I own and have left to complete:
Kingdom Hearts
Kingdom Hearts 2
Metroid Prime Trilogy
God of War
Metal Gear Solid 3
FFXII
DQVIII
Viewtiful Joe
Tramua Center: Second Opinion
Zack & Wiki
Super Mario Sunshine
Shadow of the Colossus

FFIV
Chrono Trigger
Metroid II
Super Metroid
Devil May Cry
Megaman & Bass
Zelda
Zelda II
Metroid
Kid Icarus
Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island
Super Mario Kart
Super Mario
Super Mario 2
Super Mario 3
Super Mario: DEATH (The Lost Levels)
FF:CC
Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness
TMNT 2: The Arcade Game
Every Sonic game in Sonic Mega Collection
Yes this list delves into old games, but this problem of mine has been going on for a while. Over 44 games I own and have not beat. I have seen a person who managed to eliminate this, but he did take the time and effort to get himself to play them in his free time almost all of the time. So the reason this keeps happening is that we just aren't dedicated enough to beat these games we struggle with or just ignore.
u suc :O
i'm surprised more at the fact that this blog has so many comments and yet you didn't even piss off a group of people.
it seems like for every game i beat, i pick up at like 5 that i have yet to beat. i used to be a "one game until its finished" kinda guy, but now there's just too many games. too many games.
that said, i'm going to Gamestop tonight to pick up anywhere from 2-10 games. god i hate myself.
Let's see... I'm working on Lost Odyssey now, and I have to finish:
Final Fantasy XII (probably never gonna' happen)
Onimusha 3
Devil May Cry 3
Dragon Quest VIII (Just have to get the second ending)
God of War II
Knights of the Old Republic
Viva Pinata (Is there an end?)
Dead Rising
Oblivion
GTA IV
And the only game I can think of that I want to play because I haven't gotten the chance yet is Mass Effect. It's coming next from GameFly. You've got a problem sir. Super Mario World? COME ON MAN!!
im with you buddy...........i think my list go over the houndred............shame on me........
Rainbow Six Vegas
Patapon
God of war II
Resident Evil 4
Okami (God that game is long)
Supreme Commander
Ankh
Daxter
But I defintly won´t buy new games till I finished the first four from that list (fuck the others)
You are all pretenders. I might not be the best, but I am certainly no pretender; I have hundreds of games, most of which I haven't even PLAYED. I also haven't finished 99% of the games I own. I surely am superior in this matter.
...I wish I wasn't.
