Ladies and gentlemen, I am concerned. It seems that a great many people are suffering, and that's hard to watch. This tends to happen when video games are involved, and while I'm not exactly sure what causes it, I like to do what I can to help. To that end, I have put together a simple troubleshooting guide that might soothe some of the unbearable pain you seem to be experiencing. Prepared below are some easy instructions on how to STFU about Modern Warfare 2.
Step 1: Shut the fuck up. Above all, this is an effective method of problem solving that will, in most cases, alleviate any issues you may be experiencing. Think of it like a reset button. Should any of the measures you've attempted prove ineffective, rest assured that simply closing your mouth and worrying about something more important is usually enough to set things right. It can be difficult to believe, but there really are better things to get upset about. If that fails, try some of the troubleshooting steps outlined below.
Problem: I can't support Modern Warfare 2 because of the leaked footage of the airport level so I can't throw my weight behind and purchase it.
Solution: Then don't. Nobody is jacking you up with a gun to your head to purchase it. It's clearly within your rights to not support it as a consumer. You also have every right to your opinion as well but how about we wait for the actual finished game to roll out, shall we? If you're not privy to the whole game how on earth can you draw any kind of logical opinion from just one snippet? Sure you may not like that particular scene but keep in mind, it's being taken out of content. As in, again, it's not the whole game. It could be that after experiencing the full game you may see it in a new light. And if by chance you do purchase it and still may have any trepidation of the forthcoming scene you can , get this,
skip it. Yes Infinity Ward has given everybody the option of doing just that. That's kind of generous of them to think of the faint of heart like that. Actually I personally find it odd that in a game where you mow down people with every conceivable modern weapon dead that you'll grow a conscious all of a sudden because these particular people being shot are not armed "bad guys". I mean it's okay to snipe ( bad ) people's brains off as they do their patrols, or knifing them in the back to meet your objective as these things are not technically morally wrong, right? Again, if the above rationale is not enough for you, the short answer is, don't buy it. No, really. Nobody is forcing you to buy it. Still having trouble? Refer to Step 1.
Problem: Activision is evil. I wont buy it because of that. I will not fund their campaign of satanic business practices in which they try to, get this...make money.
Solution: This is going to sound like a broken record but don't. Don't buy it. Boycott the shit out of them. Create a worthless online petition where like minded delusional souls think they can effect the outcome of Modern Warfare 2's sales. Since you wont be getting the game chances are you'll have plenty of time on your hands while the rest of us will be rocking the game. Who knows you may change a few people's minds into your way of thinking. You know, the ones that weren't going to get it anyway. Actually the Activision is evil tag is bizarre to me. Since when did EA lose that? Since when are all game companies not wanting to make money? You think Activision is the only one? Think the rest just make games just for you 'cause they're sweet on you? Because they want to give back to us gamers? Let me stop before I lose track. That's just me thinking out loud.

The truth of the matter is, nobody is holding a gun to your head and making you buy MW2. Some of us are really pumped about it, and if you're not one of those people, there's absolutely nothing wrong with that. If you don't like the fact that it exists, you can easily voice that opinion by not spending your money on it. That's how it works. But please, find something better to get angry at. There have been far worse crimes committed against gamers, and chances are, you spent your money on them.

No seriously people need to shut their holes.
Man, if I had a girlfriend she'd think I was pretty cool.
I've watched movies, anime, television shows, and many more entertainment mediums that were twice as offensive, if not more, than that scene in Modern Warfare 2. They're showing you how evil your enemy REALLY IS, not sugar coating it, and THE SCENE IS SKIPPABLE!
Dylan Alford, in the comment thread for "why I won't buy MW2", said it best:
"The moment someone gives you a glimpse into human depravity... It makes you sick, doesn't it? Makes you hate it? I think that's the point. The scene won't matter to those whose only world is video games, but to people with real lives, this'll ring home in the same way many movies do."
It is nice to see you writing a lot more again. :-)
I think most people were going to get it anyway. You have one valid point about the airport level, but you dismiss the issue instead of addressing it. Ignoring the elephant in the room doesn't make it go away, and I do think this particular elephant is something that should be discussed among circles of gamers and friends.
I'd like to add that it being a videogame, doesn't devalue it as a medium whatsoever. Many people commented on the "why I won't buy MW2" thread saying:
"It's just a videogame"
That's just BS.
Topher needs to sue! I get the feeling he's the only one that will get what I did thurr.
@Riegel88:
That would be when Treyarch Studios took the helm and made their versions of CoD.
Know what I love too. If that was say, a group of unarmed "terrorists" we'd have no problem doing it. None at all. Stab em, shoot em and even rape them. As long as they're a "bad guy" it's completely fine.
Just look at the show Dexter. It's about a fucking serial killer. It's hugely popular and is a great show. But if you were to change the fact he only kills "bad guys" and he killed "innocent" people then it's a different story altogether and people would instantly get in a fuss.
It's like people need an invisible hand patting them on the head while being whispered "it's ok, they're bad people so do what you want to them" before they can support it.
And you know what else is funny too. I said back when Halo 3 was about to come out and when people were bashing it that every game that reaches that point of popularity is considered crap simply because it's popular. And to no surprise, the exact same thing is now happening to MW2 as a sequel to a popular game. Such a weak and predicable mindset.
eh... I'll likely hold off on picking up my pre-order and look to feedback on the game. I am curious about the co-op option though and that might be the reason I still buy it.
Also even if EA is evil that doesn't mean Activision can't be evil now, does it?
Look at that TV show Jericho...it came back for another season just to prove to its rabid fanbase that nobody really gave a toss about them or their stupid petition for renewal.
A 2nd cancellation followed. Point proven. Nobody has bothered to petition for it again. THEY WORK, DAGNAMMIT!
But despite this I plan on getting the 360 version for my brother and the PS3 version for myself if only because (a) it looks like a damn good game (B) when all devs weren't intrested in learning the ps3 architechure IW saw |to it that MW was damn near equal across all platforms.
That alone is more than enough for me to over look a few mistakes.
That's ... yeah, that shit isn't cool.
God forbid people actually talk one another about stuff that matters to them.
Everyone with opinions contrary to yours should also die in a fire post haste.
Personally, I find the concept of this sequence very intriguing and brave for such a high-profile mass market title. But, I will reserve forming an opinion on it's legitimacy until after I've played the damn thing and I think all of the people crying about a game possibly evoking uncomfortable feelings should too. This could be brilliant...or not. So, yeah, for now, they should shut the fuck up.
I think it's definitely silly to have a definitive, unwavering knee-jerk response to how one perceives the video we saw, but that's just a good argument against definitive, unwavering knee-jerk responses -- not for ending the discussion entirely because you don't like reading it.
I don't necessarily agree: I think we know enough about the sequence to make relatively reasonably arguments and, in an odd way, what we don't know for sure has led to interesting discussion anyway: when everyone thought you were literally playing as a terrorist, I found it really illuminating to see how people reacted to that particular idea and whether they thought it was defensible, or not. Even though we now kinda-sorta know that you're playing as an undercover CIA guy instead, even the discussion surrounding the hypothetical "you're a terrorist, now kill people" scenario had merit.
Could it have killed Brad to hold off until actually experiencing the game fully to judge? 8 days. 8 more days till release. He could have written up the article, saved it and whatever else but held off posting it for a simple 8-9 days. Played through the game and made alterations if necessary and then post it up. And I would gladly have taken it into account.
But as it is, I'm not seeing much of a difference between it and the media's reaction to Mass Effects possible lesbian sex scene. Both judge off a quick clip and neither played the game at all.
It's not like 8 days is mind numbingly long to wait anyway.
SHIT JUST HIT IT
I get what you're trying to do here, Jimbo, but you're better than plagiarism. Worse yet, not only did you copy my article word-for-word, you're completely missing the point of that series.
There is a difference between showing the player these terrible acts and making the player implicit in them. What I'm saying is this is a genuine discussion topic with a lot of interesting layers, and to shut it down because of the "full context" argument is silly.
Those of us that think the level is horrible and doesn't belong will not stop because of your position.
There is a greater good to be had in life, we are going to work towards that.
P.S. Please move to Pakistan where friends of mine live in fear every waking moment of being murdered, and you can experience this level every day FOR REALZ. Except you don't get to replay it.
