How most "Good Old Days" weren't all that good.
Y0j1mb0 | 10:00 PM on 01.09.2009 64 comments

It's amazing how time has a cleansing effect on even the most troubling memories. Let enough time pass and even the death of a loved one's sharp sting can be dulled. What's even more fascinating is how people in general, look back at things and delude themselves into thinking how wonderful everything was back then. How the state of affairs were better than they are now.

Why back in The Good Old Days we had glorious arcades where I enjoyed playing Street Fighter 2 in arcade cabinets. Such a glorious time, my friends. Then again, arcades were rarely the pinnacle of sanitation and cleanliness. More like paisley printed rugs peppered with stale popcorn and the scent of B.O. waffling in the air. Nor were they free and while it was a quarter to play most games, you could run through twenty dollars in no time. Twenty dollars was nothing to sneeze at then, that was money earned doing lawns. No, I much prefer the consoles of today versus arcades. I can look back with fondness but I wont kid myself like most. I enjoy having a system that can run everything in the comfort of my home where an ice cold beer is but a few steps from reach.

Come to think about it, most "Good Old Days" weren't so good at all. I remember my early school years of middle and high school as worthy of that Good Old Days moniker but upon further review, no... it was cool but again, I wont kid myself. The days of finding acceptance to whatever "cool" circles at that time were met with much failure. Being the biggest nerd in the school and all that comes with that title would do that. While looking back I can put things in proper perspective as in those times made me who I am today, I can't help wonder how I might of changed personally if in my youth I did get to sit with the "in" kids at lunch time. Considering most young kids at that age bracket are a bunch of pricks to one another, I wont know. But I do know that while there were good times to be had then, they weren't the bee's knees either.

Which leads me to the point of this blog. Lately there have been quite a few community members reminiscing about the Good Old Days and how everything was euphoric, blissful and carefree way back when. The Good Old Days where you could use colorful metaphors in your blog titles, where raping blogs with flames for whatever reason at the time was the norm, or ripping into new members of the community was not just done but called a right of passage, and having a glut of lulz blogs that if recapped by today's Cblog Recaps standards they would have an overwhelmingly amount of one category over the others. What's even more puzzling is long time members actually quitting Dtoid over recent banning of members that for all intents and purposes didn't follow the rules. Ridiculous.

There is no denying Destructoid was good then, no doubt about it. But it's better now. Way better. As I've stated before, Destructoid hasn't lost it's independent spirit, merely refined it. Opening its doors wider to let even more gamers into its community and making sure they feel as welcomed here, as all its long standing members do. A place that they can call their second home if you will, where they don't have to worry about being harassed, or being put down because they are not the greatest of bloggers, or the wittiest of gamers, because here the welcome mat is laid out to all. Here the cool kids and the not so cool are reversible depending on the day, the blog or the forum post. Here is the headquarters for everybody's favorite passion: gaming. This right here for recreation.

Not drama.

I do feel the same way as you do, I like, nay love Dtoid the way it is now, heck I honestly don't feel like it's changed, just improved immesurably.

Nostalgia goggles are everyone's weakness, only the strongest can resist their soothing pull. Good blog though, it's pretty bad to see people get riled up about a few douche bags getting banned.

Thank you Yojimbo. I'm glad someone finally came out and said this.

Now can we finally put all of this bullshit behind us and get on with our lives. I'm sick and tired of hearing peoples opinions and their bitching and moaning about everything that has happened. Get over it and move on!

Yojimbo, I'd like to say that nobody could articulate the point as well as you, but I feel that could your beard form coherent sounds it would far surpass you in skills in the field of communication. That being said... Destructoid is getting bigger, and with it the community. Could there be a position for you as community manager in its future..?

You are the only old person I know who prefers today to yesterday.

Also, anyone who quit over people who were banned was quitting over Ron being banned; Ron followed the rules and there's a lot that could be discussed about his banning that I don't think anyone wants to go into anymore. I don't think anyone quit over the other people who got banned, since they were all obvious trolls.

I got scared with that image for a minute, but then you didn't go where I thought you were gonna go with it. Touche, good sir :)

I haven't been around since said "Good old days", and really have no say in the matter, but I still agree with mentality that you shouldn't moan and groan about how good things were in the past. We should, instead, look ahead at the great things we can hopefully do in the future.

Great post, by the way.

like the spiderman/dtoid shoop, pretty hilarious. From someone who hasn't seen too much of the old Dtoid because of only being a lurker in those days, I don't see anything wrong with the direction Destructoid is going in. If anything I think that the real decline is in the complacency that a lot of toiders have gotten into. There hasn't been a bunch of really impactful new content coming from the community recently. Or at least, that's my observation. It's really a perspective thing in how you judge how well the site is doing.

P.S. Did you ever create a formal NC Narp Emailer? I'd just haven't heard anything else about that.

Yes, if you check out my first few blogs you can see how flamed I got for doing exactly the same as other older members did (back then, cblogs of a video were accepted). It always put me off how elitist the people here were and that's probably why I never got into the community. :(

I don't know man I had some pretty awesome days back when I was little. Riding my bike with friends into town to the local arcade, putting $5 worth of quarters into the simpsons arcade game, or teenage mutant ninja turtles, or xmen, and watching others get their asses kicked in street fighter or mortal kombat by the local expert. Then going next door and grabbing some ice cream. I miss those days, not a care in the world. Times are ok now too don't get me wrong, but there is an experience in an arcade, yes even the BO, where its something you'll never forget.

man, i remember when the 7-11 had mortal kombat and world heroes. good times indeed but the only time machine i have are my memories, and i cherish them but i would never want to relive them unless i knew back then what i know today. we had an arcade literally around the across the street from my high school and would be there all fucking day sometimes. my junior year it closed, the death of the arcades was beginning and only a certain few would remain. but i can still go to a theater and play some classics from time to time. nfl blitz was the last great arcade game to me.

good blog, was waiting for it.

I agree with overlooking the bad parts of the past, I find myself doing this alot with past girlfriends. Looking back on relationships, I only think of the great things, not the daily arguments, and other things that would constantly wear on a person.

I agree that gaming conditions are better, cold beers a few footsteps away and no worries about that jingle in our pockets running out after some over-exuberance on Double Dragon.

I do, however, look back on the early 90's with great fondness and do think of them as "the good old days". Y'see, it's not because I feel that arcades were a shining example of gaming heaven but because times back then were much simpler. Not trying to sound like an arsehole, but I'm quite a bit younger than you. Back then I was 8-9-10-11-12 years-old and this meant that I didn't have to worry about losing my job, feeling low and depressed about stupid things, the price of bread, losing a girlfriend.

I guess that adulthood, being surrounded by countless more difficulties (rather than just how many scoops of ice cream I'm going to have), is something that I'd like to escape sometimes. I'd like to go back to a time when everything I needed was taken care of for me and my innocence and ignorance to the majority of world around me was bliss. I didn't realise it then but now I look back with the fondest of memories. I envy my childhood self.

Great write-up. I love Destructoid.

Great piece!

If everyone who has written a cblog complaining about an aspect of Destructoid had instead taken that time to actually write a funny or thought provoking cblog (like this one), the world (and the site) would be a better place.

Writing a blog about missing Workman, Nex, Houghton, or any of the other great editors that used to work here is one thing, or writing a piece about things that could make the site better is another, but taking the time to write a cblog that just whines about not liking the site anymore is totally weak. It's like going to a party, and then talking non-stop about not liking parties. What's the point, other than to look like an attention seeking elitist?

My grandmother always talks about how her childhood, the "good" old days, were so much superior to the days now. Then she gets reminded about all of her relatives dying in WW2 and all the maimed people coming back and her mother crying for months on end. She remembers how they never had enough food and how she was bedridden with scarlet fever for months with no doctors -- something easily avoidable now.

The good old days aren't all that better than the present ones.

*I had this ling response, but had t shorten it, since I felt it was uncomprehensible english*
But I kinda digress(hopefully that`s the word in english) with it.
I think that the good old days, (that everyone reffer to), was this little site, where everyone had fun and felt like it was a really big extended family.
Now this site is so big that it`s hard to feel that way with the constant flow of new ppl.
Stupidity between 200 ppl is affordable, stupidity between 10000 is just pure chaos.
So yeah, you have a really good point, but maybe the good old days weren`t the free flame or lulz, maybe just the pppl that used to be here.

Also, am I an old dtoider? since I kinda feel that way.
