How many times are you going to buy THAT SAME GAME??
Y0j1mb0 | 10:26 AM on 02.03.2008 38 comments

I love games just like the rest of you guys. We can disagree about which console does what better, what game should of been Game of the Year instead of what the associated press plucked, and we can even debate why vexed alex still plays Pokeman games but one thing I don't see much hoopla about is why are we suckers when they release a game that we have played before, own it still, and buy it again for another system..be it LIVE. DS, PSP..etc.

How many times are we going to buy Rez? Dreamcast, PS2, now LIVE. How many times are you going to buy FF 1 through 6? What about Sonic the Hedgehog's 2-D games? Frogger? Ms.Pacman? Rampage? Resident Evil 4( now with waggle! ), Hell..Resident Evil 1 through whatever, Street Fighter 2 ( I have that for my SNES, PS2, XBOX, and Virtual Console..really. ), Disgaea ( great game but portable on PSP..just fire me from my Job now.) man I can keep going. You probably can too.

The point is if we were to take away all the remakes that really don't add anything differently to the gameplay and or story of the original, are we not playing the same game? Over and over? And we're paying them for the same exact experience. I at times slap my own self on the forehead. It's like in my mind I think:

" You know maybe cause they added a new intro and added a sidequest it will rock harder."

It doesn't.

"Maybe cause I can play it online with a friend it will be WAY better!"

After you beat the game co-op once it's done. You don't play that again and move on to CoD4 or Halo 3 again.

I've come to the conclusion that if I must download games, or buy them on my DS lite or PSP I just need to try something NEW. Then I thought hey if everyone were to do that I wonder what potentially great games can be developed for us to play. It seems to me we keep giving these companies free easy money everytime they stretch into their back catalogs and hipnotize us with our own great memories of past gems. We're not paying for the games again but of those memories we had of the original.

It would save us money in the long run if we made these companies earn our money by creating new content then tapping in our reservoir of mirthful memories of classic games.

We would probably get more Indie games for these new downloadbable content if the console makers decided to make their distribution system more available (Much like Valve, they've recently made steam distribtuion more or less free).

And yeah, while I love old games, I'd like to see some new downloadable stuff on these current gen consoles.

Yea you have a point there, I get tired of constant remakes.

However, don't you think its good that they bring out games years and years after the original so that new generations can play them? For example Rez is damn near impossible to find anywhere else than ebay these days and only a limited supply, now we can freely download it from Live. Ive tried for years to planescape: torment but as yet havent found a copy, if only they would re-release it.

And there might be other reasons to buy a remake of a game. Rez, for example, is a game that I never had the opportunity to buy new. I picked up a used copy a year or so after release. So, when I buy it now, I know that some of my money is going to the developer this time and I like supporting people who I feel do exceptional work.

I'm with awesome locks on this.

I'm all for IP titles on PSN Nintendo or XBLA...
Besides that the cartridges are more expensive to buy for NES than to DL them with your Wii now!

So Indie games need to realize the market potential there, and seize upon it.

Personally I CANNOT wait for Ecochrome on PSN. Why not only because I ONLY own a PSTriples but for the uniqueness it brings. Besides that more competition is brought by the sales of Indie games on these networks.

I own five PSN DL'able titles ALL of them are Originals. Do your part & don't download rehashes AS MUCh as the indies. Who knows what will come of that.

I don't know. I mean omg HD graffix and extra lvls r so kewl with remakes now-a-days but if you all ready have the original then what's the point? I have my copy of REZ for the PS2 in mint condition and if I ever felt like playing it anytime soon I'll just pop that sucker in.

@MrSadistic:

My point exactly. If you own it..why buy it again.? I fall into that trap hence why I posted about it. It's just like they know we are stupid and say:

Well that for some easy money. Let's get the stupid people to buy this again.

And they're right. We willbeacuse of sometinh minimal they added. Like buying the same comicbook with a different cover.

@ y0j1mb0

I bought multiple comic books over the years, with just different covers. Those have intrinsic value.

You & Sadistic are right why buy again if already own. But maybe your NES system is broken or you have kids & you want them to experience their age level appropriate games.

BTW completist go ga! ga! for games they're found of, just for those extra bonus levels. The question then rises why buy "Add-On" packs for "Current Gen" games?

Not only because you can't join in on the fun with those more finacially suited for Bonus gaming. But for the fondness & appreciation for the first initial product that was brought to you & apprectiation for the hard work the devs put into it!

I see what you’re saying, but I’ll only buy the remake if I don’t have the means to play the original game. For example, Spyro the Dragon (PS1) is available on the PSN for $5.99. I liked the game a lot, but I didn’t get to play through the entire game (I did beat the second and third games in the series, though), and either way, I never owned it. So I’d have no problem forking over six bucks for it — if I had the money and the time to spare for the game.

Here’s a different case: I have the original cartridges for Super Mario Bros. 3 and Sonic the Hedgehog. Each was packed in with its respective system — the SMB 3 box has the clear “CHALLENGE SET” sticker on it, while the Sonic cart features a prominent “NOT FOR RESALE” banner. Anyway, I (sadly) no longer have my NES or my Genesis, so essentially, I’m just keeping the carts around for nostalgia and to show off as part of my massive media collection. So if I ever got a Wii, I wouldn’t mind re-buying those two games on the VC because, while I am still in possession of the cartridges, I can’t use them.

Side note: As per your recommendations, I am currently downloading The Seven Samurai, Yojimbo, and Zatoichi. I am expecting that I will enjoy them all very much, but if I don’t...I want your head, neatly sliced off with a katana, on a silver platter.*

*I’m just kidding, of course...or am I?

I'm highly against buying straight remakes and ports if I own the original. However, if I missed the original when it first came out, like I did with rez and Castlevania: SotN, then remakes are my savior. So in the end, I support remakes however I'm very careful about which ones I buy.

Side note: I've purchased battlefield 2 three times. I bought it for PC when it first came out only to find that it didn't work (I think my chip set wasn't supported) so I bought it on Xbox. When the 36o came out I was still in love with the game so I felt compelled to buy it for that system as well. Big mistake, turns out all the good console BF2 players were on the original xbox still and all the boring newbs were on the 360. Oh well, lesson learned.

I've played SOTN before, but never really got around that far into the game before I bought it on the 360.

@PANZER

With Blade Runner, I have it on DVD but I decided to get it just to see how great that movie looks, restored in HD. It was also the first Blu-Ray movie I bought. I mean I did have Wild Hogs, which came with the PS3 bundle I got for Christmas, but ugh I don't think that should even count. That and I'm a movie buff 2-da-xtreme!!!!!

I'm in the same boat as bronx. I LOVED crash bandicoot as a kid, but over the years the disc was mysteriously lost. So I bought it on the PSN for like, $7. But if someone does have the original, and the means to play it, theres no reason why they should buy it again digitally.

On another note, I love the orange box SO MUCH, I'd buy it least 2 more times. Maybe even 3. Seriously.

I'm a Resident Evil 4 whore, so yeah, I own all the versions except the atrocious PC port. I may have to not download that one, just out of spite for ruining something so perfect.

On a side note, I still prefer the original GameCube version of RE4. But the others were just as.....beautiful.

I agree with you 'j1mb0 sir.

New IPs require creativity and a certain financial risk, unfortunately these things are like garlic and sunlight to the vampiric games industry.

XBLA proves your point perfectly. 'Please buy these games that you've undoubtedly already bought at least once before. They're in HD now!!'

I think remakes are good to keep introducing new gamers to those franchises, but it is also somewhat of a waste of time for developers and gamers since it is nothing new. A catch-22 if you ask me.

You know, I don't buy on multiple systems with the exception of maybe Animal Crossing on DS and GC, however they aren't that similar so I guess that doesn't count.
I have noticed that I buy multiple DVDs. Like we have Reservoir Dogs on different editions, at least 5 versions of Halloween, and I have multiples on DVD and HD/Blu-Ray of the same movie.

I wanna be the very best
like no one ever was
To catch them is my real test
To train them is my cause

I will travel across the land
searching far and wide
Each pokemon to understand
the power that's inside

Pokemon! its you and me
I know its my destiny,
Pokemon! Oh you're my best friend
in a world we must defend
Pokemon! a heart so true
Our courage will pull us through,

You teach me and I'll teach you,
Pokemon! gotto catch'em all

Every challenge allong the way
with courage I will face.
I will battle every day
to claim my rightful place.
Come with me,
the time is right,
there's no better team.
Arm in arm we'll win the fight!
It's always been our dream!

Also, I'm still more attractive than you.

Also, the only way I'll buy a port is if I lost my original copy, there's a good incentive (gameplay and features wise), or if I've never played it.

Also, where the fuck is the Street Fighter II remake?!

The only games I have really repurchased due to remakes or ports would be the Resident Evil series for the gamecube and The Legend of Zelda: Collector's Edition ( it came free with a subscription to Nintendo power. And the Street fighter collection for the xbox. The reason I did so is becuase I knew I would replay these many times, so after I got the newest system, I'd still be able to play it. Also, granted I got all of these games for cheap. But sometimes these ports or remakes are good for people who missed them the first time. Putting them on different consoles help to i.e. GTA on xbox= now have your own music to listen to. Zelda= all on the same disc and now the original has a improved save system. not too bad I suppose.
