Ask a kid what he wants to be when he grows up and chances are you'll find the usual suspects come into play. Firemen, policemen, princesses, the hot at the time superhero, but what wont generally make an appearance is actor or movie star. I have a theory why. The reason being is when you're young that vocation really doesn't have an appeal, hell it might not even register in the youth's head what all it entails. The luster and allure of being a thespian with all the accolades that come with it only entice the teens and older crowd. It is to them that its songs of fame and fortune are the loudest. It can be said, at one point or another no matter how skilled or not skilled, no matter how attractive or not attractive, we've all contemplated being in front of a camera.
Fantasies of adoring fans swooning to our visage on film or pixelated videos is the stuff dreams are made of to many. I just kinda wish it wasn't to video game bloggers. We already get thrown a slew of labels our ways: nerds, geeks, losers and pedophiles, must we also be labeled egotistical hams? Let me explain why I think video blogs need to die a horrible death in a fire before they destroy our game blogging way of life.
Perhaps that last line in the paragraph above is a bit melodramatic but for me, this habit of just slapping a video up on a blog or a post and calling it a day is rubbish. Don't get me wrong, I like looking at a game trailer or gameplay video like the next gamer but do I really need to have a blogger on camera clumsily tell me his impressions, thoughts or reviews of a game? I'm thinking I'm going to be in the minority here but I'd rather
read these things than looking at some badly lit, horrible sounding video with amateurish cuts and the participants involved in it, trying to be hip or cool or show us his new haircut.
See the thing is this. I read about game news and all that comes with it to be better informed. Not to look at you no matter how pretty you are. It looks like everyone nowadays with a camera wants to be a personality instead of just blogging or writing about the game beat. Seems like laziness. If you can write about it, is there a real need to get in front of a camera and tell us about it, aside from injecting a whole slew of "Umms" and showing us your mug? Are bloggers that egotistical now? Look at most game sites and these
vblogs are on the rise. I know this is the internets and we are supposedly a
You Tube Nation but its a change I'm not welcoming much.
You may think of me as a wet blanket because I don't love these vblogs and perhaps I am. I mean sure I'm curious as to what some of these writers or bloggers look like and act like in the real world but to me it falls back to their writing. I am only interested seeing them in a new light because of their writing. Lets not quit our day jobs here gents and hire an agent. Again I believe I'll fall way into the minority here because I loath them and don't bother with them half the time.
I especially hate reading a post and then have to continue the rest of the piece in a video. I think its cause I'm an old dude. I genuinely love/prefer the written word over some zany video that usually isn't that zany. Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of these vblogs that can be entertaining and funny when that's what they set out to do and highlight it as such. But these many many others that are there to inadequately take the place of the written word are just plain... bollocks.
So there is someone else who likes the written word over videos and pictures, awesome. Possibly vlogging is easier because you are forced to say something and your suspect grammar and spelling abilities can be somewhat mitigated?
How is Cross Edge? Enlighten me, I'm teetering right now waiting for some solid impressions.
The best video blogs are the ones you can opt to just listen to...oh, those are podcasts.
But yes, video blogs are crap. If you don't have anything worth recording that can't be written down or made audio-only, it's not worth making a video blog of.
I find it easier to express my thoughts through written word rather than through a video, mostly because I start stammering when I get in front of the camera.
you hate everything
So Y0j1mb0, if heaven exists, what would you like to hear God say when you arrive at the pearly gates?
i agree i would much rather read as well.
i like to read about what someones experienced about a game because they have to think about what they were playing and how to put it into words and describe it so people can get the idea without playing the game.
instead of just spitting out crap in front of a camera spliced with short clips that arnt even of that person playing it.
also i hate being on film/camera. thats why im always behind the camera instead.
Whether it is writing or video, poorly constructed anything results in crap. The cream of the crop usually rises to the top, though (e.g., The 1UP Show - well now CO-OP over at Rev3).
And, truthfully, there are some written blogs that are tl;dr. ;)
Oh Yojimbo, I can see in your old age you are starting to become scared of all the new technology that's out there. it's ok buddy, it's not gonna hurt you, I promise. ;-)
Don't care if it's written in code, or the video is in Moon Speak with horrible Japanese voices but (and thank god for this) good subs, if you can manage to get your point across to me, and I sit there and listen;
You earned yourself a medal.
Hmm...I might have missed this point above, but I wonder if you differentiate between v-blogs where the actual blogger is shown "just talking", and those where the blogger's voice is heard, but something else (in-game footage, etc.) is seen. I can understand your disenchantment with the first (as you say, why not write it?), but if the visual imagery is used to enhance the aural commentary (i.e., directly displaying something to back up a point that the blogger is making), that might be a different story. Or not - what do you think?
OT, staring at the Cross Edge image in your sidebar, I hope that you post some impressions or the like of it, as opinions I've found elsewhere are all over the place. Of course, I already own the game (just no PS3...doh), but I'm still interested to hear your thoughts on it.
Heh heh...
This just makes me want to see Yojimbo do a Vblog.
A star is born?
Somebody set Yoji's pacemaker back to normal. :p
Well you have great points, but human ego hasn't been tamed since we learned to make fire.
I myself am ok with the video blogging thing, so long as its to the point, but I prefer the written format more due to the fact that I like reading better
Know what I hate more than video blogs? Tutorials that could be explained much faster with text and a few photos. I have no idea why some people insist on making videos to demonstrate program use when taking a bunch of screencaps is a lot less effort.
Video blogs, reviews etc. are a natural evolution of our style over substance gaming culture. I very rarely bother with the things because videos usually seem to be lacking in any kind of informational content and are generally not terribly well produced either.
Videos I see posted (in blogs and to the front page) are sometimes rather stream of consciousness, whereas having to take the time to write something down encourages the writer to develop and refine ideas. I don't want to watch a 5 minute video of senseless rambling (or listen to hours of nothing on podcasts). Write it down and give us something to read or use that to produce a quality video piece.
And yeah, those stupid "I could explain this in one paragraph but I'm going to use a 10 minute video because reasons" tutorials are sucktastic.
Death to video blogs! Long live the new flesh!
I hate video blogs, mostly because they involve kids/fanboys/people saying "uhhhh.
@SilverDragon: LMAO! XD
The lambs have come out to agree with yet another post. Well, I'm here to disagree! I'll post my video response soon...
I am 100% in for getting rid of the video blog. You start the revolution and I'll start the fires!
also long live the new flesh
Looks like Jimbo is afraid of change. Typical human.
The only reason I dislike the video blogs are because I can watch them at work but I don't have speakers so no sound.
"but do I really need to have a blogger on camera clumsily tell me his impressions, thoughts or reviews of a game?"
Is it that much different than a random stranger telling you about their impressions? Even you are guilty of doing this of just generally being smug.
They go hand in hand.
You're too old school meng , VBlogs are the future ya heard!?
Kyousuke Nanbu:
Is it that much different than a random stranger telling you about their impressions? Even you are guilty of doing this of just generally being smug.
I'll make a deal with you. When I get on camera to tell you something I can easily and better describe in written form then you can take potshots at me. I don't think you understand what I'm trying to convey.
Maybe just for you I'll do a vblog and then you can call me smug. I promise to look good, maybe wear some snazzy spectacles or shades to boot if you promise to stop being a prick for no reason whatsoever all the time.
We got a deal?
This blog simply depresses me. You see, I am blind. Not many people know this. I can't form an opinion on Vblogs because of my handicap. All I can do is read the written word on Dtoid and other gaming sites.
i dont know, man. rev is incredibly handsome.
Video reviews often lead a lot to be desired, as the hosts scramble and stammer their way around til they reach their point. I'll take written reviews any day.
A video blog usually alienates me from a blogger.
I think it's like if you're used to an anime dubbed, and then you watch it subbed you're repelled by it.
My problem with most video blogs is that a lot of them don't have any substance to keep me interested; they're usually some talking head droning about with occasional footage, and very little else. There's also the issue of me really giving a mouse's donkey about what some random has to say. I dig Dtoid's vblogs because I value their views as opposed to some camera whore on youtube that I don't know. I guess it's just like having a friend whose opinion you trust telling you about a game vs. some dude you never met before at a store telling you about it.
I like video blogs when they are good, I don't like them when they are bad.
Rev has really good video blogs.
But stammering is fun and it fills time. But, really... I agree 100%. Until somebody can come in and just lay that shit out there without looking awkward.... OR until Doogie Howser and Malcolm Reynolds start singing video games news(!), I'd rather see in print.

I don't like vblogs mainly because I have fuck all bandwidth. Watching video instead of just reading text wouldn't be fun for me.
i love reading the bible but i hate organised religion, churches and preachers and collection plates that go into the preachers harley funds. fuck that and fuck them.
Video blogs always seem to come with an overpowering sense of ego and attention whoring. No matter how humble the vlogger speaks, he still chose to make you look at his face and listen to his voice. Rather than constructing a document that says everything he/she wants to say, they decided to make you watch them talk at a computer in their bathroom.
I completely agree with you. I prefer reading text over listening/looking at some dude on my computer screen. Also, I can't watch video at work.
I don't like video blogs because I'm still on dialup out here in the middle of rural NC. So, yeah. I'm right there with you, for different reasons though.
Hey shut up. I love Conrad's little chats. But yes, I haven't even bothered to watch any of the other stuff.
