And so the powers that be at Sony finally unveiled their new ps3 slim model and more importantly the long overdue, coveted pricecut. Time for Sony to pop open the champagne and toast, as their victory in the console wars is well at hand. Hold up boys, before any corks are released and whores called upon, let us ponder whether this action taken by Sony will indeed change anything for them. Will it be the fruitful endeavor they envision? Or could it very well be that after all is said and done, its too little too late? Personally, I think the PS3 is a fantastic console. I got the 60gig day one and have never regretted paying what I did. Then again I got the 360 day one as well. Come to think of it I have gotten every new console day one. I'm a bit obsessive when it comes to shiny pieces of gaming electronics. I need them as soon as possible. Yet there are those who are weird and don't share that need to blow exuberant amounts of cash on the latest fancy immediately. They need to be swayed, nay seduced and courted more before they can commit to a purchase. The way to usually go about this is of course a pricecut. But in order for this to work successfully people need to know it. Notice how I said people, the average joe and not gamers. Y'see gamers already know about the pricecut, they scour the internet and sift through it like a prospector looking for gold nuggets. They live and breathe gaming news. They are the hardcore gamer and chances are if you're reading this, you're part of that fraternity. You're a Dtoid community member, someone who as soon as that PC is fired up, off you go to multiple gaming sites seeking gaming news, previews, reviews and listening to whatever creatively named gaming podcasts there are out there. While this crowd is plentiful, this move by Sony just doesn't apply to them. For they fall into three camps: 1. They already bought it. Like me, they went through the day one shenanigans to acquire one. So they no longer need to be sung to. Let us say for these purposes this equates to one fourth of them. 2. They really are waiting for a comfortable pricecut to purchase a PS3. They may even buy it at this price. These smart, frugal minded individuals have the patience of supermen. I envy them. They make another fourth of that gamer pie. 3. The remaining two fourths of the pie. The half who will never purchase the PS3 for reasons that include: it doesn't have backwards compatibility, not enough games, they're still too broke to buy one, they have a loving monogamist relationship with their 360, are wildly allergic to free online and break out in hives if they don't pay for it .They already have a Wii so really they need nothing else, life is blissfully wonderful. The truth is that this demographic isn't the end all and be all anymore, probably never was. It's the regular folks who determine which console is successful. The moms who buy them for their kids, the fathers who may upgrade to the newer console when they get around to it so they can play a newer version of Madden, the regular Jane and John Does who will purchase them as Christmas presents for their loved ones. Y'know, the ones who don't keep up with gaming news on gaming sites. The ones that need to be bombarded with commercials on TV so they know whats up and consider purchasing it. The ones that as far as I can tell Sony hasn't and still isn't reaching yet. I don't know about you but my local news hasn't even mentioned that the PS3 dropped in price. If Sony is expecting word of mouth to do their advertising job for them, they'll regret it. The only reliable word of mouth reached to the masses are the negative ones. Good word of mouth is always trumped by bad and Sony still has a lot of bad word of mouth to overcome, whether justifiable or not. I really hope Sony starts a huge media campaign letting everybody know about not just their new price point but what it all entails Blu-Ray, WiFi, etc. They should have more commercials than those Free Credit Report Dot Com guys. Flood the airwaves, have a Happy Meal deal with McDonalds or something. Give multiplatform games free commercials just so at the end of it, it can have the PS3 logo. Give out lollipops or bagels. Just do something. Get the word out to real people or at the end of the day, Sony's pricecut wont mean a damn thing.

dude i luv ur lips
Good piece, Jimbo. I was honestly wondering when you were going to post a blog with your thoughts on this topic.
I do know that at the $299 price point and for being so slim I might actually buy another one so I can play a few games (sacred 2) with my girl friend and have a more dedicated blu-ray player as all players in town are $250+ anyways.
I have played RE5 at a friends house, and that was really the only game that screamed at me to be had. Whenever I look at GameStop, and RPGamer.com to see if there is anything new out I never see anything that gets good enough reviews to give it a shout out. Hell even XBox360 got Star Ocean IV, which was a huge disappointment for me since every other one of their games were on Playstation. I know im bitching a little bit but the whole taking out the Backwards Compatability is a pretty big deal breaker for me. It would be nice to ditch the PS2, in lew of the BluRay spinning device. Im not going to lie either, all in all I will still probably buy the damn thing once the New FF games come out, but probably not until then, and if they come out for PC I may sidestep this whole PS# debolacle completely.
As far as Marketing goes, I am sure they will focus on the Holidays, which are quickly approaching. On Gamestops front page they have it advertised, and Google is such a monumental "go-to" I really believe that if someone is looking for a price cut, they will find it pretty easily. I am sure they will miss a few people living in caves but this really is the technology generation if you ask me. Maybe its just because I am a younger guy that I have that opinion though, correct me if im wrong.
I think Guitar Hero 5, Tekken 6, Soul Calibur 4, Street Fighter 4, Resident Evil 5, GTA 4, MGS 4, Dynasty Warriors 6, and a few others are their "Meat and Potatoes" games. They don't have anything new and innovative, and they don't have any RPG's worthy of Next Gen Recognition in my opinion.
XBox 360 has a much better selection of games, and I feel like I just made a contract with Satan for saying it, but its true, because they either have the ports, and if not, it isn't worth buying a whole new system in my opinion.
If I am wrong enlighten me, because I would love to get my hands on it now that the price has dropped, and be proven wrong, but I still think a lot of people like me out there are .... STILL waiting for some Final Fantasy Releases, and that isn't for about another year.

I want a PS3, and now I can finally afford it.
It's not really in the works. It's just buzzing around the internet as a rumor. I _assume_ we'll see it before this console generation peters out in four or five years, but you never know.
Well I did get something out of checking out Atlus.com Demon souls looks pretty bad ass, hope it isn't too remniscent of Diablo. But it comes out 1 day b4 my birthday, so maybe Ill treat myself to that as my first game for the ps3. Love your alien form Chrono Cross btw.
Would love to see P5, but I kinda want them to dump the series and come up with a new saga, with a whole new battle system, and new demons, and storyline to be honest. P4 was good, but its really the same as P3 with a slightly different story and characters. No matter how many times you change the dungeons, and add a few new bosses its eventually gonna get old.
I love shin Megami
Nocturne...DDS saga...Persona...Devil Summoner...etc etc
Also it was truely sad was the amount of people who were just bitching and never had any intention of buying a ps3, just bitching for the sake of bitching always annoys me. Hell how many people said they were buying a ps3 if the price went down and turned around and complained about BC, almost 3 years worth of ps3 games missed and you want to play the old stuff, that seriously persuaded your opinion, some people really needed to STFU (and no if you were dissapointed about BC not being in the ps3 that's fine, but if that really stoped you from getting a ps3 and ignoring all its games and other features and great online, then yes STFU).
"I don't know if I speak for everyone,"
I know! You don't.
"XBox 360 has a much better selection of games, ... because they either have the ports, and if not, it isn't worth buying a whole new system in my opinion."
Ratchet and Clank, Warhawk, MetalGearSolid4, Killzone 2, Resistance 2, LittleBigPlanet, Valkyria Chronicles and Uncharted. I'm not even going to mention upcoming releases or PSN games. I wonder what games you think are worth getting a console for. And what do you know? I can play all these great games on a console that works. And I don't even need to buy a HDD that costs half of the console (125 euro's for a 120 gig Microsoft HDD).
$200 for an Arcade unit.
$150 for a network adapter and Xbox Live Gold.
$150 for a 120GB Harddrive.
Hey! That's $500 dollars!
I hate myself.
Where do I fall in that fraternity?
If FFXIII or Vs both suck I may be done with holding out for RPG's and accept that my Genre has died.
This is Square Enix.
To address your point: Sony DEFINITELY needs to get some more commercials onto the US Airwaves, I'm sure there are plenty in Japan. I have friends my age (19) who have been gaming for as long as I've known them, and they had no idea that the PS3 was going to drop in price, or that there was talk of a slim, nothing. I myself didn't even know that the wireless was built into the PS3. (I own a 360 and the wireless attachment was a $100 external piece.)
So I definitely see the need for Sony to start pushing out some commercials with lots of PS3 details. Well said, Yojimbo.
Oh well, maybe I will have to get on board with the MMO's
The 360's failure rate overrides anything you have to say about the PS3.
I agree. Shit if 300$ is bad, than all the upgrades you need for 360 are what I would consider rape. Plus repairs if needed. Ouch....
Yeah that 360 has a better selection of games was never tue to begin with,I had a launch 360 and during that first year if you got anything besides cod 2,DOA 4 you were pretty desperate, that whole year was spent playing the ps2 at my house.
When the ps3 launched it received alot of the ports of 360 games(quality was questionable though) but sonys own in house development teams has given the ps3 a slew of games I have yet to see rivaled by anything from its competition ,and as they learn and develope new engines and utilize blu-ray it continues to get better. K2 exceeded all expectations of it and warhawk and socom are played to this day for a reason.
Bottom line the ps3 has its own great library if games, it was never short to begin with and always kept up, and even exceeded expectation, the majority of the internet was just in to much of a sticker shock to notice.
On topic, some sort of television commercial blitz would really do some good and help the average folk learn about the system.
Such shameless plugging...lol.
Psychologically, you drop the price on anything and people are going to buy it just because they feel they are getting a deal. How many shitty ass 10 dollar games have you bought for the simple fact that it was 10 bucks? I know I'm guilty of it. I'm not saying that 300 bucks is a drop in the bucket for most people. I am saying that fuckers on the fence are going to jump all over this. Even the people who are "GO 360" are going to consider picking it up at this price point.
Hell, I still might buy a slim because I have a FUCKING PROBLEM NOT BUYING NEW SHINY ELECTRONICS.
....fuck.
Lastly, are you going to PAX? No is not an option.
There is also Disgea 3, Folklore, Oblivion, Fallout 3, Eternal Sonata, and Enchanted Arms. And I have Demon's Souls, it's nothing like Diablo if that's what your thinking. It's just a hard as balls fantasy/action game with rpg elements thrown in. If you want a Diablo clone on the PS3 there is Sacred 2(Shit story, crazy fun loot drops) and Untold Legends(HAHAHAHA, well at least you can pick it up for next to nothing if you need a quick hack and slash clone). So you've got 2 Western RPG's and 5 JRPG's if you count VC, and 2 hack and slash rpg's. That's a pretty good RPG collection for a starting PS3 owner, sure 1 or 2 of those games are shit but the rest are well worth the money and time.
THE PS3 IS A PIECE OF SHIT!
I don't need more whining kids on the PSN.
Anyway, having said that... I want to get one. There are definitely a few games I want that can only be found on the PS3. I just won't be getting one anytime soon. I honestly don't have enough time as it is to devote to my 360 games. I couldn't imagine throwing another console into the mix.
It sucks really that the game industry forces us to choose with exclusives. I chose the 360 at the beginning and haven't regretted it. There are plenty of games I would have been sore about missing on it had I gotten a PS3. I have been seeing a few games here and there that are making the PS3 more interesting to me, but like I said... I just don't have the time. I really don't have the money either, even though the price drop has really made it a good deal.
I am looking forward to some PS3 games someday. Someday.
@ Takeshi
Yeah I know, we got enough spoiled 9-12 year old tikes on PSN as it is! (( CoD:4/W@W ))
No more would be appreciated. No doubt.
@ y0j1mb0s #3. Reason...
That's what subscription fees for XBL are for. The sense that it's better than Free PSN. Bragging rights i guess.
@ VWGTI
I think you are exactly 110% right!
Also, Welcome Back Homie!
I have no idea what you are talking about. I would never plug my Gamer Limit stories here at Destructoid.
@Takeshi:
I agree man. Let's convince everyone that the PS3 is shitty, because I also do not want a bunch of asshole kids telling me they are Elite on PSN.
I hate those guys so much. If Sony can kick up the advertising just to get em off the air I'd become a Sony fanboy.
I hate to sound like Karl Rove, but I think that Sony could benefit from some good ole fashioned negative campaigning. Though I admit that I am unsure whether they could find themselves in legal trouble for slander or libel or something, since I don't know the current laws and loopholes regarding video game ads.
I'm Laird, and I approve this message.
Thanks for some additions, I needed to have my illusions dispelled a bit
When Mom and Dad or an "average" gamer walks into that store... and the 360/PS3 price is comparative - the PS3 should simply sell better. They don't generally care much about backward compatibility (especially if upgrading from a PS2 and already owning one)... they primarily care about value vs. the other console and it's easier to see the value when the two units are comparably priced.
With the price drop I'll also likely get my sister-in-law one for Christmas and I know of others who intend buying a second unit for kids or others in the existing household... with free online play there are no "extra" costs such as gold memberships for two people in the same house to play online... all those co-op and online games!
... they do however need to rebrand Playstation and take it back to the "live in your world, play in ours" type of branding... something other than the mess of advertising they currently have.
Thanks, dude. I sneak around here nowadays.
@ Jack
LOL
For example, why include a built-in wifi adapter, when wireless technology is not fast enough for reliable online gaming? Removing the adapter would save money, while at least partially improving the condition of the network. Ask any PC gamer if wifi works out well for them in games like TF2 or SFIV.
It just feels like they are trying to push units to a casual crowd instead of creating a more solid experience. If Sony really wanted to get the 360 crowd on board, they would focus their efforts on making PSN a more attractive online service than Live. I know I would be more interested if the features and performance started to rival the 360.
So I guess that means we ... agree!?
