Okay so here's the deal. If you have read any of my comments regarding anything about buying anything (or more specifically the evil PSPgo) then you would know that I have a very teeny tiny income. It's pretty ridiculous and can barely sustain a healthy gaming diet. Plus, I won't lie, about 70% of that goes toward Rock Band DLC. Don't hate.
But Rocktober is looking like a good month for me. Brutal Legend, the Abbey Road DLC, and DJ Hero are all looking well within my budget. But of course typical me can't save up money without toying with temptation and my biggest stumbling block on the road to fiscal prosperity has been and always will be Craigslist.
Recently while looking for a DS with which to Scribblenaut all over I stumbled upon a chap selling a 20GB PS3 (the model with BC) for $150. Fuckin' sweet. I was planning on getting a white Slim with controllers Q1 next year from Colorware but I'd be lying if I didn't say it would kick ass to have one of the few PS3s with BC. It's not like it's that big of a deal for me, not at all, but it would certainly kick ass and buying it for $150 and then sending it to Colorware to get it painted would be WAY cheaper than the $800 for a white Slim with four white controllers that I was gonna buy before (DON'T CRITICIZE MY SPENDING!).
Problem is if I buy this thing than there goes my entire Rocktober which wold suck for obvious reasons. I'm finally making enough to buy games day one and it rocks but dude that PS3 is looking mighty sweet.
Should I sacrifice my Rocktober dreams for a PS3 or just hope another one comes along and, ya know, quit spazzing out?
Wow this is a tough choice. I guess it really comes down to whether or not you really want to play the PS3 exclusive titles that are out right now. The other games you mentioned, Brutal Legend and DJ Hero, are both multiplatform games. I mean the high percentage of games out there are multiplatform as well, and since you already own an XBOX360 it means you only need a PS3 if you want to play Sony exclusive titles like God of War 3, Uncharted 2, MAG, Gran Turismo 5, The Last Gaurdian, etc etc.
On the other hand, that is a pretty sweet deal for a PS3. The good news is the PS3 will always be there, as will all those games you were going to buy in October. At least if you wait on the games there is a good chance they will eventually fall in price and you'll be able to get them cheaper.
On the 20GB PS3... it's a good price but you'll also have to consider the price of swapping out the HDD and putting a new one in at some point. With betas, demos and game installs, that 20GB won't last long at all. I have a 60GB and every time I get a beta I have to delete games and I'm considering doing the HDD upgrade.
... also, not to criticize the spending... but you say your income is low and yet you'd consider paying an exorbitant fee just to have your PS3 colored? Out of curiosity are you spending on credit or using savings? If you're using your savings, do you still have some emergency savings left over?
Well you can easily pick up Brutal Legend and DJ Hero for the cheap a few months down the road. Plus that PS3 is a pretty good bargain, so.. I'd go with the PS3.
That's an amazing price for ANY PS3, let alone one that has full B/C. I'd grab it, but as Elsa said, 20gb won't last you very long. Luckily, internal hard drives are dirt cheap, especially when compared to the 360's hard drive price. I'd grab it if I were you for the sole reason that you won't find one for that price ever again. Just keep in mind the 20gb model doesn't have wifi or card readers, if that matters.
@Elsa
I have a bunch of money in savings. I just have a low spending budget but come next year when I plan on getting the Slim I'll have more than enough. I don't spend much. As of right now I have a ton of cash in savings an the $150 would be a small dent. $800 later on down the road would a bigger dent I'd still have a few hundred left.
@Pedro
Woah no wifi? Yeah that actually is a big deal for me. I wonder if I can just take my 360 router (not the official Microsoft one) and put it on a PS3.
Colorware is just not wise. It seems like a good idea, but it nullifies your Sony warranty (regardless of what they say on their site) and it costs way too much. Just be happy with a black one, and enjoy the amazing slew of PS3 exclusives. Demon's Soul is worth the cost of the PS3, and you also get to play Infamous, Ratchet and Clank, etc.
Just don't colorware, it's not worth it in the long run.
The way I see it this deal for the PS3 is a limited kind of deal and the games you want will be in store for quite some time so you should go for the limited deal here. Also, it will probably save you money to get the cheaper PS3 with better compatibility and then use the money you were planning to spend on the 800$ one to buy the games you want.....Well, that's what I think anyways.

I didn't help much at all did I?

I'd do what sadistic said. Pick up the ps3, get the rocktober stuff later on. Brutal legend will go down in price but youll just have to wait.

If you find a GREAT deal go with it! Sometimes you can't always hit gold twice.
is this not a Forum thing?
This particular Rocktober happens only once, but PS3s will be cheap and be around forever.
