RRoD has brought itself upon me, or how Microsoft ruined my Summer break.
Xiofire | 10:59 AM on 08.14.2008 16 comments

Much like all of you, I own an Xbox 360, and was very happy with my purchase. However, this morning during a casual match of Domination on Call of Duty 4, that all changed. This wasn't any ordinary match, for I had just unlocked the Red Tiger camo for my AK47, and was excited to see what it looked like. As the match countdown started, I could just see my newly acquired beauty behind the shadow that covers the screen before the match starts. Then, as the darkness faded away, and my comrade shouted "TAKE NO PRISONERS COMRA---"....This happened.

Not my image, just a representation

The screen froze, and looked like a quadrilateral-afied mess. And sure enough, when I reset the console, the inevitable happened.

Unfortunately, I didn't unlock 80 gamer score, and neither is it the end of our story. No, my Xbox refuses to die. Rather than go down gracefully, admitting defeat, it now won't show the Red glow, but opts rather to boot up, work for 2 minutes, then freeze.
It even, at one point in its mad near death rage showed me one red light, stating a E71 code, but that has now gone also.

Most annoying part of all is that I start college in like, 2-3 weeks, and i wanted to get some gaming in before then seems as I'm on Summer break. Not only that but my copy of Soul Calibur 4 comes tomorrow, which is just a further kick in the peen.

This just makes it hard, because if I send it in, I cant say it has the RRoD, because it wont show it any more. When it gets to the repair shop, won't they just turn it on, see it working and send it back? This is the wrong thing to say, but is there a way to force it permanently red ring?

Halp fellow Dtoiders?

Gioteck Real Triggers for PSTriple Review
Xiofire | 6:48 AM on 06.18.2008 5 comments

Having played my PS3 to the ends of the earth as of late with the release of MGS4 and MGO, I really found the L2 and R2 trigger/buttons/wutevers to be a bit of a pain. This was also apparent in my play through of Motorstorm, with me having to change the control settings so the R2 button was no longer accelerate. After looking on Play.com, I came across these
The Gioteck Real Triggers. They are two pieces of plastic which clip over the R2 and L2 buttons, and turn them into a trigger, similar to that of the Xbox 360.

For £3.49, I did feel a little ripped off when just that showed up, a small card insert and some molded plastic, but what else was I expecting? The trigger themselves are made out of the same plastic as the triggers on the controller, and even retain the bumpy/coarse texture of the original buttons. This really makes them feel original, and not some bunged on 3rd party adapter. They also do not effect the travel of the button, with it remainings smooth on press down.

Before

After

My favourite thing about these triggers, is that they make the controller feel bigger, more chunkier, and more forming to the hand. I always felt that the PS3 controller was too small when compared to the 360 controller, and I always preferred the latter, but with these triggers, it just makes the whole thing a lot more comfortable to hold, and play with.

When tested with games, such as MGO and Motorstorm, I had varying results. Motorstorm was a great improvement, with my finger conforming to the trigger, giving it a more natural feel, and with no risk of my finger slipping off. With MGO however, where they are just used to browse the inventory, it did slightly feel in the way, or that it slowed things down a bit. I could still access the menus, and select my required weapon, but it just felt a bit delayed.

Overall, I'd say that for the money, these were a worthwhile investment. They made some games all the more playable, and added to the whole feeling, however with others, they felt alien, and slowed down the action by just a fraction. Im going to stick with them, and I would recommend them, be it only to people who are experiencing a problem.

MGS4, I has it! EDIT: UPDATED with new pictures.
Xiofire | 5:49 AM on 06.11.2008 18 comments

At 11:45am this morning, on the 11th of June, the Parcelforce man kindly dropped this at my front door.

And it contains...

Yes, the UK Limited Edition version of MGS4, exclusive to Play.com. My previous blog post discussed if Limited Editions were worth it, and whether it was just the UK that got shafted, but Im glad to say Mr Kojima (or Kojima-san) and Konami have redeemed my faith.

The box contains a 6" figure of Old Snake, The game, 2 "making of" documentaries, and the sound track. The figure is nicely made, with detail on all the interesting parts. No innuendo intended.

But right now, before I fully open this, i have an exam to sit. Will be back later with more pictures and what not.

EDIT: Back from the exam, and have opened this sucker. Firstly, the contents of the box. Inside was the Solid Snake "Olive Drab" 6" figure, with removable electro blade and rifle. Pretty good figure overall.

Then. behind the figure, was a completely blank, silver box, which contains both the game and the special features (Making of and Soundtrack.)

Oh, and inside the special features blu ray, was a nice little slip of paper which warned me of the upcoming spoilers that lay ahead on the disc.

So thats it. My new MGS4 UK LE completely unboxed. Im off to play this thing to death for the next two days.

Oh and just to show you guys.

Limited Editions, Worth It Or Not?
Xiofire | 10:25 AM on 05.17.2008 9 comments

Over the last couple of years, most predominantly over the current generation of video game consoles, there has been a massive introduction of special or limited editions of video games on the market, with big titles such as GTA IV, Metal Gear Solid IV, Devil May Cry 4 and Bioshock all bringing their own to the view of the video gaming public. These come in multiple shapes and sizes, from collectors tin cases, to bags and even action figures of characters in the game.

I myself haven't had the best luck with limited editions, mainly due to either short supply or the fact that I am located in the UK. either way, my luck with collectors editions has been abysmal. Halo 3's Legendary edition had me watering at the mouth with its life-size Mater Chief helmet, and additional DVD with documentaries from Bungie themselves, and i was sorely disappointed when the man at my local GAME said all preorders had been filled.

Walking away from the Halo 3 release with my slightly lesser Limited Edition was slightly disappointing, only worsened by the amounts of online stories and posts over people securing their helmets at midnight.

Devil May Cry 4 was then on the horizon, and after the announcement of a US Special Edition, I soon became hopeful for a UK one too. This was again brought to an abrupt halt, when i found out the British version only came with a tin case and an art book, whereas the American version came with much nicer box art, the first 4 DMC Anime episodes on DVD and an extra DVD in the case. Again, I stuck to the only limited edition I could get, and felt disappointed after flicking through the art book once.

Finally, the same occurances happened with Rainbow Six Vegas 2, with the US getting a far superior Special Edition to us Brits. However, again, our version came with much less, making me feel a little cheated once again. I still however bought the special edition.

I now find myself in the same predicament as all the above cases. Metal Gear Solid 4 is to be released in a few weeks time, along with another Limited Edition offering which consists of the Game, a Solid Snake 6" Figure and a Making of Blu Ray disc. This all comes in at £79.99, double that of the standard game.

TL; DR? My question is this; Is the MGS4 special edition worth the extra cash, and what are your thoughts/opinions on special/collectors editions overall?

What will they add in Tekken 6?
Xiofire | 4:04 PM on 01.06.2008 4 comments

Having just bought Tekken Dark Resurrection Online for my PS3, I was thinking to myself, what can they add to this experience in Tekken 6? New moves? Sure, we can make it so Jin can kick ass in a dozen more ways, and also a dozen more moves to make winning with Eddie even easier. New stages? Yeah, because we don't wanna be fighting in the same areas over and over. New Characters? New characters are OK if implemented right. But non of these sum up to a new overall experience that makes the whole thing sweeter.

I just can't think what they can add to Tekken that will make it an overall better experience. The expected changes like upgraded graphics and cinematics are understandable and justifiable, but other than that, I cant see where Bamco will go with this franchise.

Any ideas? They could just go the DOA route and make the females more "jiggly"?
