Never buy memory cards on the internetz, they can be duplicates.
Also, I demand that anyone who has a PSP shall get Dracula X Chronicles, Metal Gear Solid Portable Ops and Megaman Powered Up!
Get your PSP custom firmwared. Seriously if you don't you are an idiot and it's a waste of a machine otherwise.
Do what Gamegoblin says, I don't have a PSP but my friends that have it custom firmwared are always "yay!!" while the others are "fuck this shit :(".
Get Jeanne D'Arc.
The custom firmware is worth the time you need to install it, even if it was only to play the games you already have on UMD on your memory stick. Better loading times and the battery last longer because of no UMD spinning. Also with the newer custom firmwares when you are up-to-date you can just upgrade with the network update feature. There is also tons of homebrew software for the thing.
Yeah, custom firmware is the way to go. It basically enables you to run homebrew programs (which range from emulators for you to play NES, SNES, and other classic games on your PSP to whatever other random apps you could want) and it also allows you to store your games on your memory stick (which helps them load faster, preserves your UMDs, and allows for a LOT more games on the go).
For a memory stick, I'd recommend getting a 4GB stick, especially if you want to take advantage of custom firmware. I don't know how compatible 8GB sticks are with custom firmware, but either way, make sure you get a Sandisk (they're actually higher quality than Sony brand) and don't buy it off the internet (unless it's from Best Buy or something, not eBay or Amazon). It could easily be fake which means slower read/write times and possible issues with loading games.
As for games, there's not a whole lot I can name off-hand. There aren't really many great PSP games, IMO. The screen's blur makes a lot of the great games (MGS: Portable Ops, for example) hard for me to enjoy. I bought my PSP mostly with homebrew in mind.
yes as said already, custom firmware is the only way to go. especially for someone like you who said they're not in the rich department, get a 4 gig mem stick, get the firmware on there, and start downloading the games. Just a few to name about looking into
Legend of Heroes series
Jeanne D'arc
Brave Story
Tales of Eternia (find the Euro version.)
just a few RPGs that I know were decent or good.

Be warey of the "cheepest" Memory Stick Pro Duos online... a lot of times you will find that they are Sandisk or Sony knock-offs with an awful penchant for loosing your data very often. Check around stores, I know that you can get 2 GB sticks for $25~$30 at Sears (or it was when I bought three XD). If you're going to get it online though, make sure that it's through someone like Amazon (not a 3rd party seller!) to make sure that you're not getting a dud...
