I hope everyone on Earth reads this blog and quits saying the Wii isn't worth it. It's getting old already.
I've been playing Rune Factory Frontier and it's ruining my life. It's a spin-off of Harvest Moon, and it adds dungeon crawling to the formula of farming and junk. There's also three installments on the DS, but I haven't touched them... yet.
It's good articles ..

Solid list!! I'd say if a person is a sports fan, specifically of soccer, to check out PES since the Wii controls are amazing. It's one of those control schemes that turns out so much better than dual analogs.
Also I can't believe I keep forgetting to check out Little King's Story! I was pumped for that game when it released. I also gotta get Mario Kart, SMG2, DCKR, KEY, the Bit.Trip game and several dozen VC games among many, many other titles....>_>

Thanks for the comments everyone! Hope it has made your Christmas shopping that little bit easier...
@J.Ho / Celica: I was planning on doing a few more categories, but by the time I'd reached 'Shooting' and still had three lists to go, thought it was probably going to end up being long enough! I was planning on doing sports, RPGs and online, which would have included some of the games you both listed. The ridiculous thing was that I started writing this in the hope that I'd be able to knock out something useful a little quicker than my usual posts, but it ended up being over twice as long!
@Pedrovay: Amen, although I do think some of the problem is that so many of the Wii's best third-party games are not the kinds of AAA releases that most people typically hear about, hence the list. The only AAA third-party games on the console that I can think of from the top of my head are Epic Mickey, Monster Hunter Tri and maybe GoldenEye 007. That's not good for a four-year old console!

Also, I should have found room on the Guide somewhere for Deadly Creatures. It was THQ's "If no-one buys this, we're not developing traditional games for Wii anymore!" release and was actually brilliant, but given how it starred a scorpion and a tarantula and received zero marketing, was never going to have much appeal to a Western world packed full of arachnophobes. It's got a really intense atmosphere and the motion controls work pretty well for fighting (it's basically a brawler). Another one I'd definitely recommend picking up, it must be going for dirt cheap prices too.
Rune Factory Frontier! YEAH!
And Little King's Story! OH YEAH!
@ Xander- This is a phenomenal list, and I in no way meant to imply that it was lacking anything. It's just the right length.
It's just that in the end, it always feels like you need to list more.

Great list, but there's one part I don't quite agree with...
"Avoid: Anything with 'Party', 'Games', 'Carnival' or a word ending with 'z' in the title."
I know you kinda rectified what I'm about to say with the sentence following that one, but Wii Party is actually pretty fantastic. It's been entertaining me and my friends since it's release.

Fantastic list. I'd throw Kirby's Epic Yarn on there as a family friendly game bc the lack of a death mechanic and the super cute style of it make it awesome for just about anyone. My mom sat around watching me and the brother play it over his thanksgiving break and enjoyed even that.
Tis be a mighty fine article for those wanting to give the Wii a shot, my only complaint would be this little line here:
"Look deeper than its casual reputation and the copious quantity of garbage Nintendo has inexplicably allowed to infest its library "
Could be stop blaming Nintendo for 3rd party crap already? i don't remember anyone bitching to Sony about it last gen when the PS2 was the shovelware magnet of that time.
As for some recommended titles (besides the ones included already by others):
-Lost Winds and Lost Winds Winter of Melodias: yes one of 'em is a Wiiware launch title, but its still one of the best Wiiware games out there.
-Cave Story: need i say more?
-Tatsunoko vs. Capcom: Ultimate All-Stars: In the fighting category the Wii lacks variety but this one will satisfy the most core of fans in the genre.
-Excitebots: Trick Racing: Mario Kart maybe the undisputed king, but this is a good option in the racing genre.
-Silent Hill Shattered Memories: A fantastic return to the Silent Hill psychological thriller roots, action fans might find it lacking but SH core fans bothered by the turn into more mainstream action of the HD releases will love it.
Finally i want to add some stuff to look out for next year, ya know in case you have some spare cash to save after the holidays (lucky you):
-Zelda: Skyward Sword
-Super Meat Boy
-The Last Story

You should include Cave Story....but actually people can get if for free so...
Anyways great list and Merry Christmas!

@Edgy Dude: Frankly, I found Shattered Memories to be utter rubbish. The exploration sections were boring, the Nightmare sections frustrating to the point of being broken and the 'psychological profiling' made absolutely no difference to any significant part of the game. I was really looking forward to it as well, since I'd never played a Silent Hill before. Unless someone ports SH2 to the Wii or PC for some random reason, I now don't think I will again.
Boom Blox was really a nice surprise, you know. Also, I better get on with SMG2. I haven't touched it yet!
@Xander Markham: Different strokes for different folks i guess, i can understand your frustration to the nightmare parts since i also experienced it a bit but the whole echo research and figuring out what happened part i loved to death, i actually liked both SH:SM and SH: Homecoming, now if we could mix the best parts of both... nah, that'll never happen, Konami isn't that clever. Also, SH2 was ported to PC actually, problem is right now it's price is quite steep.
Amazing guide, man. I already new everything mentioned (you're amazing for mentioning ABAHB), but this is the best Holiday Wii guide I've seen. Definitely better than IGN's -_-
Thanks for reminding me that I still need to pick up Little King's Story, and Muramasa though.

Sweet blog post! I, too, am sick and tired of being sick and tired of people dissing the Wii and saying the system does nothing but collects dust. The Wii is an amazing system, with some amazing games. Great list is great, except I would add Punch Out!! and one of the best pure platform games I have ever played, Donkey Kong Country Returns. Happy Holidays!
