Nicely written!! I thought that seeing Avatar in the 3D in the theaters was "cool" and "an experience", but I also knew right away that I couldn't take it for any length of time as it really did seem tiring to my eyes.
I think you may be right that seeing 3D films may set a precedent for how people will view the 3DS.

Thanks for that fantastic, in-depth write-up! I found your review of the system to be the most well-rounded and comprehensive I've yet come across.
I happen to enjoy 3D cinema, but I see it for what it is - a spectacle. A shiny little extra, like the candy coating on a M&M. So my personal anticipation for the 3D effect on the 3DS wouldn't really be let down by your hands-on experience. It sounds exactly as I've been picturing it. However, it also reminds me of how the dual screens were (barely) utilized when the DS launched and for some time afterward. They were a tacked-on extra to games that could've easily been handled by the GBA.
However, once devs hit their stride, learned from experimentation and freed their minds, we got to see some really innovative implementation of two screens and touch control, as well as an explosion of casual titles that expanded the market. So my confidence is high that the use of 3D will also travel a similar developmental arc over the course of this system's lifespan.

@DynamoJoe: Expanding the market was A)short term and B) unrepeatable.
iPhone/Android gaming is exploding, and in large part, I'd say we can thank the DS for that. Apple created a smaller, more universal device that offered a lot of the things casual DS games did, at a lower price. The expanded market is moving to phones, so Nintendo's going to have a hard time marketing this to anyone new.
By emphasizing accessibility last time, Nintendo attracted a lot of new buyers. I don't think that'll work again, given the new environment created by phone gaming.
Though, you're right, new tech = rough launch titles and more time = better releases. I do think we'll see more and better ideas using the 3D, but there's only so much from the DS we can expect to see again.
Anyway, thanks for the review/write-up/impressions/thing.

This is going to have Mega Man Legends 3. It doesn't matter if it's in 4-bit and 1D, I'm getting it.
Thanks for the comments, everyone.
@DynamoJoe: You're right that developers will probably get better at implementing the 3DS' capabilities into their games further into the handheld's lifespan, and the fact that there were instances when the 3D was impressive (Pro Evo and AR Games) suggests that there are unexplored possibilities. The motion blurring, even though some games were better than others, seems like a big problem which will almost certainly bug the console for its entire lifespan though, while the 3D visual effect still looks artificial and distracting: every time I turned the game back to 2D, there were compelling reasons to leave it there. I think the analogue stick and power upgrade will definitely be the main reasons for getting a 3DS near launch. Several people, including an hilariously unimpressed Frenchman ("Eet eez not even as good as ze tree-dee at ze movies! What is ze price of zis toy?"), echoed my sentiments about the 3D, although in fairness there were some people who seemed impressed.
@Elsa: Since I only got between five and ten minutes with each game, it was difficult to judge how tiring the 3D will be on the eyes. I've never had that problem in the cinema, but I think the violent movement blurring in games like Pro Evo and Ridge Racer will be the main cause of headaches and the like, rather than the times when the 3D is (relatively) well implemented.
@Roager: Interesting points about the phone market. I think Nintendo will get early adopters purely from the fascination of 3D and the familiarity of the design, but the high price could be a big point of contention. However, I don't think people buy DSes for the same reasons that they buy phones and if Nintendo can provide a steady stream of games that are sufficiently different from their cheap, phone-based alternatives, they should do fine. People do seem to like their DSes, so some of that goodwill could carry over too.

Good write up, I personally don't care for the 3D, and I also agree that the handhelds are trying to replicate console gaming to much, and forgetting what they are, anyways like the NGP I'll get the 3DS when they give me some games that are not remakes, or dumbed down version of their console counterparts, although at the end of the day that's what all games on handheld sum up to.....but I think you guys get my point.
Awesome to read something from someone who has actually had some hands on time with one. Your experience, (the actors, etc.) sounds kind of hilarious.
Honestly the 3D isn't a huge selling point for me either. I fully expect that when I get one I'll have it in 2D mode almost all of the time, other than initial try-outs of different games in that mode. 3D movies bother me really, I've never seen the appeal of them as they just seem to detract from an experience for me. I suppose I just like the 3DS for what a nice piece of hardware it is, and a few of the games slated for release for it.

A comprehensive and solid write-up with good details in there. I was already cautious about this, and I will probably continue to be. Especially due to your "XL" comment, which I can totally see happening, too.
The comment about Kid Icarus is particularly telling, Nintendo's hardware designs have been a headache for 3rd parties to work with for some time... now it seems that Nintendo themselves seem to have a hard time coherently using all of 3DS' features.
The idea of pocket copies of SSF4 and Blazblue has piqued my interest for the 3DS, but I'm still not sure its something worth 300 duckets. I will say though even if they are not making the most out of the new 3D gimmick so far the launch line-up is looking pretty nice, better than some systems anyway.
The moment Avatar came out, I knew, like a homeless man knew of Armageddon, the things it would bring. I do not like embracing 3D, but....this is a more powerful DS, and I love my DS. Thank you for giving me a grain of salt in which to take the 3DS with. With the announcement of the NGP (Kind of cool, kind of interested, ki, and the possibility of a 3DS lite (They say no, but I think it'll happen), I will be waiting patiently for my next handheld. Great write up.
