Linux and gaming – Your Experiences?

I would love to make the full transition from Windows XP to Fedora, the only thing holding me back so far is the fact that I still have a few PC games stopping me from switching to Linux completely.

In the past I have had little to no luck with Games in Linux, I managed to get Day Of Defeat running under Wine on my old machine, but the frame rate was too low to actually enjoy the game. I've heard reports of WoW running quite nicely under Wine but haven't tried it myself. I'd expect your system specifications will have a lot to do with how well Windows games would run under a Windows emulation layer.

Most console emulators you will need have already been ported to Linux, which is great. So, not all gaming is lost when Linux is installed. There's also quite a big selection of native Linux games available for download.

I even have the Xbox 360 wired controller running under Linux too.

But I'm talking about the games that are mostly windows only, the big hitters.

I've just had no luck in the past running Windows games in Linux. I have seen videos and stuff of games running seamlessly in Linux, but found myself having little to no luck..

I would love to hear other members experiences using Linux and running games. Have you had any luck? Did you use Wine or the paid alternatives crossover Linux or Cedega? Do you use Linux now as your main operating system and play widows games?   read

Hackers are gay for Halo.

Halo 3 seems to be a magnet to hackers. You always hear about people manipulating the game. It was even a problem in Halo 2, in the form of "Standby-ing"

Standby-ing was the act of pressing a “standby” button on your modem, (not available on all) which would send the opposing players to a “please wait” blue screen while the standbyer's run around and rack up kills.

Now, they seem to be taking it to a new level; Using botnet software to find out they're opponent's IP address, then point a few dozen zombie machines at them in a distributed denial-of-service attack.

I'd never heard of this method until a few days ago. And it tickles me how some people will risk getting themselves in trouble with the law over exacting revenge on someone who stole their flag...

Apparently these types of programs are becoming mainstream, so you can probably expect to start seeing similar attacks emerge from other Xbox live games.

What do you think makes Halo so appealing to Hackers? I have to say, to put yourself at a risk of being arrested over a Halo 3 game is pretty hardcore lol.

Bale FREAKS OUT on Terminator set - mp3 (NVGR)

Fan of Christian Bale? Check this out. The guy absolutely flips out on the set of Terminator Salvation. I was never the greatest Bale fan although I thought he was amazing in American Psycho..that Welsh-American accent he speaks with drives me nuts. Apparantley he only talks with the accent as to not alienate the "mainstream" american audiences.

But the way he talks down to the crew here, I find disgusting.

Listen to the mp3 yourself and form your own opinion... HERE

He's gotta be pissed that this was released to the public.. But if that was me he was talking to, I would kick his ass (or at least try).

Was he right to flip out? Or, do you think his outbursts are the ramblings of an egotistical asshole?

10 things you didn't know about XYU

I'm sure you've all heard the tales and legends of my great victories and accomplishments over the campfire, so here's a few facts you won't find on my Wikipedia entry or my IMDB page:

1 – I smoke way to much weed; So much that it starts effecting everyday life. But I wouldn’t have it any other way.

2 – Making music is my first love; Even before gaming, music is what I love. Making it, Jamming it, whatever. All kinds. From electronic to traditional.

3 – I hate people who moan a lot. Especialy about the XBL community in general. You don’t like it, play with some RL friends or shutup.

4 – I never completed Final Fantasy 8 and it mocks me in my dreams to this day.

5 – I like action figures. Not so much collecting them, although I have a few, It’s more of an appreciation for the craftsmanship and detail.

6 – Gears of War 1/2 online is shit. I hate Gears online. The best word I can use to describe this is Bland.

7 – Lazy. To the point where I would spite myself, or go without rather than actually do anything about it.

8 – I went to see Spice Girls the movie in the Cinema. Nuff’ said.

9 – Every time I watch Edward scissorhands the ending brings a tear to my eye.

10 – I hate fakers. I only post in shit that I care about. I don’t pretend to know the gaming industry like the back of my hand. I only blog about stuff I care about and only reply to stuff I care about. I always try to be sincere.

Also, meet my Dog, Reginald a.k.a. Reg a.k.a. Reggie a.k.a Death Lord.

10 Years too late: Pokemon Indigo

When I was 12 or 13 the only thing I gave a shit about was Pokemon, I had to have them all. Back in the late 90’s the majority of kids’ lives were spent watching Pokemon, playing Pokemon and trading Pokemon cards. I was no exception, I even had a Pokedex. Yep.

Obviously, having such an impact on me as a youth, a lingering nostalgic Pokemon interest remains. I think most of us play the new RPG’s that come out every few years. They’re great and all, but it’s just never the same as when I first played Pokemon Red.

Well, 9 years later my prayers has been answered in the form of: Pokemon Indigo. An unofficial, web based, fan made, 2d Pokemon MMORPG in Beta.

I haven’t played it (yet) although I probably will tonight. And to be honest, I think it could be fun.

Anyway, if you care to give it a blast then head over Here to signup and give the latest beta a whirl.

Would you try this out? If not for the lolz, then just to experience a Pokemon mmorpg?   read

Star Wars goes scary. (NVGR)

There have been many different spin off’s and tie-in’s across all different media when it comes to Star Wars. From books, to comics, to video games, to TV shows and movies. Star Wars is without a doubt one of the most expanded and detailed universes know to any franchise.

Now a new novel set to be released October 27th takes Star Wars in a whole new direction; Horror. That’s right, a Star Wars horror novel...

I’m not against the idea, although it IS a bit “out there”. It could turn out very well, I’m not a big reader but this is definitely the kind of thing that would get my ass out the door and to the local WHSmith.

So far details on the plot are being kept quiet, although my moneys on Zombie Storm Troopers…
Jedi + Sith vs. Horde of undead Storm Troopers = WIN. (If this was a game it would be awesome; Bikini Zombie Slayers + Force Unleashed)

Halo Warz!!

As Halo Wars prepares to launch, I can’t help but start to feel excited about a new Halo game. The Halo franchise has always stuck with me, if I had to choose one game to compete in, I would Choose Halo 2/3…I think of Halo as “my” game. I’ve never been as good at many games as I am good at Halo. (My mom tells me I’m good)

My worst fear for Halo Wars is that it falls flat on its face trying to be and feel like a Halo game. I think Ensemble have a major challenge on their hands in this sense.

My main concerns are;

1) I was a little bit sore for a while over the fact that a company other than Bungee would be dipping their fingers in the goodness of the Halo honey jar. Over time I’ve come to just accept that they want to make money out of an established franchise.
2) Also another of my main concerns are the units…I hope to god they don’t Pull a Star Wars prequel trilogy and have units that do not make sense or just don’t fit in the Halo universe. Or have units that seem more advance than what was around in the other Halo games.
3) Most importantly to me, is the fact that if it doesn’t feel like a Halo game then, in my eyes, Ensemble has effectively wasted 2-3years of development.

I still love the Halo franchise. Although I dont spend as much time playing Halo 3 latley as I would like to. Most of you probably don’t feel as closely tied to Halo as I’ve found myself over the last few years, I hope some of you are. Either way, I’m sure you don’t want to see the Halo name run into the ground by cash-ins and spin off’s. After having an awesome trilogy of games which pretty much innovated the way we find and play games online, and also ranking systems (Thank you, Halo 2)

I guess though even if Halo Wars sucks, us Halo fans can at least push it to the side and pretend it doesn’t exist, like a Muslim father disowning his recently deflowered daughter.

At the end of the day I want Halo 4...But not now…It’s too soon. So in a way I’m very glad that at least Halo games are still coming out. At least ODST is made by Bungee, so I feel I can rest easy knowing that the game is in capable hands, and I’m actually really looking forward to ODST, It’s not Halo 4, but at least it’s something that feel’s “official” until we get Halo 4.

Thoughts. Give them to me.   read

MMORPG: Is that all there is?

Recently I left the world of Azeroth, seemingly for good. Part of the reason I choose to leave was I assumed there would be another MMO on-par with WoW in terms of content and overall experience that I could begin to play…

I was wrong….

Have you tried Final Fantasy XI recently? I downloaded the 14day trial thinking “how could a Final Fantasy game possibly be bad”. There were so many things I disliked about FF11, from that pointless piece of crap “play online viewer” to the pixelated 2003 graphics… I didn’t keep it for longer that an hour I admit, but it seemed so dated and bare and insignificant compared to the mighty mmo overlord, WoW.

Anyway, this isn’t about Final Fantasy XI in particular, but just about the sheer lack of great fantasy MMO’s compared to WoW… Sure, I’m sick of Azeroth, but I wouldn’t lower my standards or play a greatly inferior MMO for that simple fact.

I’ve tried Conan, Guild Wars, LOTR, EvE online, FFXI and countless pay2play Korean grind-fest’s, basically all the big hitters, with no joy. I blame Blizzard for making WoW so damn good.

I have yet to try Warhammer, But I’ve read a lot of reviews and it really doesn’t seem to stack up against WoW. I may still give it a try, but I’m not too optimistic.

The more MMO’s I try, the more I’m realizing the greatness of WoW. That Blizzard really did make a spectacular game, far ahead of anything else on the market (or anything that would come out in the next few years, it seems)

It’s becoming clear that there’s really not a title out there that could compete against WoW for “best MMO” without being completely out of its league and ends up running home to its mother crying, with its trousers soaked in urine.

I guess if you take all the MMO’s out at the moment, and compare them to Warcraft….You could consider WoW the perfect MMO, I mean, if every MMO you can compare fails against WoW….Doesn’t that kinda make WoW the perfect MMO by default? (for now, at least)

So as 2009 begins, so do my hopes of a game that could compete against WoW. The most promising so far seems to be The Old Republic.

What are some promising MMO’s scheduled for a 2009 release on PC? Do you have your eye on any inparticular?

Warner Bros and Fox settle Watchmen dispute

Given the recent circumstances surrounding the watchmen film, a lot of fans feared that the film they have been waiting so long to see will never reach the light of day.

Well Watchmen fans can now rejoice, because according to the Hollywood reporter a settlement has been made between Fox and Warner Bros.

Warner Bros. and Fox have resolved their dispute over Watchmen, with the studios scheduled to present the settlement to Judge Gary Feess on Friday morning and request that the case be dismissed. Terms of the agreement will not be disclosed, but it is said to involve a sizable cash payment to Fox and a percentage of the film’s box office.

Being a huge fan of the original graphic novel this is great news. I am aware that not really many people have actually read Watchmen, but never the less, even if you haven’t read the graphic novel you can’t deny that Watchmen looks set to be one of the most stylish, ass kicking films of 2009.

How does this news sit with Dtoiders? Are you as relieved as I am? Do you even care?

Crayon Physics Deluxe fills my heart with joy

I’d had my eye on Crayon Physics deluxe for a long while. After playing Crayon Physics, I enjoyed the game but it was in no way of “ZOMFG” calibre.

Then I got the E-mail from Kloonigames stating “ýCrayon Physics Deluxe is here”. “Delightful” I thought as I stumbled over to the official site and paid my $20.

Wow, what a game. I've barley turned it off since getting it, Just playing this gem makes me happy. If you’re ever annoyed at real life stuff, go play crayon physics deluxe and after 30 seconds of staring at the screen you will be totally oblivious to what was going on and thinking only of magical lands where midgets in tuxedos await your every command (no matter how filthy)

For example, As usual, my girlfriend is nagging me to “show her some attention” and “get off the computer” so, stay with me on this one, instead of just hitting her in the face and telling her to STFU, I actually listened to her and simply told her to STFU without hitting her. I now realise I don’t need to beat her ALL the time! Just the threat is enough to shut her up. Our relationship is doing so much better since.

(Yes, I am completely disgusting and depraved)

And for this, I thank Crayon Physics Deluxe for shining a ray of happiness into my cold, black heart, with it’s delightful graphics and ever soothing music…

Fake? Ghostbusters 3 site sets me up for a fall

Oh how I’ve dreamt of a Ghostbusters 3… I’ll be picking up the new Ghostbusters game for sure. But the movie is what I'm really waiting for.

So, First we got word some writers from “The Office” were penning Ghostbusters 3, then Bill Murray revealed his renewed love for the Peter Venkman character after recording dialogue for the Ghostbusters game. (as long As GB3 has Bill Murray I’m happy)

So finally it may actually be happening.

Then I see this; apparently the site “Ghostspy” claims to have footage from the set of Ghostbusters 3, and also a CGI video of a huge garbage monster, which I’m pretty sure I remember from The Real Ghostbusters animated series.

Also they claim to have pictures of the new proton packs…Which, if real, I am NOT happy with. (They look like they've been designed by Apple) iPacks?

There seems to be an awful lot of pictures and information for a fake site and the videos do show a large production crew in New York...but I remain highly sceptical on the legitimacy of Ghostspy.

Anyhow, check out the site here HERE

What are your thoughts? This site must be fake, right? If those are the new proton packs, how do you feel about them?   read

Fun for free - Cube 2: instaCTF

I don’t know whether the fact I’m advertising a single mode is worth calling this a review, so I won’t. I’m not going to go into a lot of detail about the game, as I tend to only play instaCTF mode, I’m simply writing this to make people aware of the game, for those who have never played it.

Head over to http://sauerbraten.org/ to download the latest CTF Edition of the game. It’s a hyper fast-paced, instant-kill CTF game using crossbows!

I haven’t dabbled too much in the other, less psycho game modes and I don’t need to. InstaCTF is what got me hooked to this game and is what keeps me coming back. It also has level editing capabilities, where you can join a multiplayer game and you can all edit maps together. You can create underground tunnels and other pretty nifty stuff.

From the site:
“Much like the original Cube, the aim of this game is not necessarily to produce the most features & eye candy possible, but rather to allow map/geometry editing to be done dynamically in-game, to create fun gameplay and an elegant engine.”

I first downloaded this game around July last year, since then I’ve spent many an hour impaling little blue cat people to walls. If little cat people are not your thing the game allows you to change the skins of character models from the options menu. For me, there’s something strangely alluring about pinning cat-men to walls with crossbows…

Obviously the fact instaCTF is 1 hit kill really creates a lot of amazing moment’s in-game. Too many times have I found myself chasing the opposing team’s flag carrier frantically trying to nail him with a well placed arrow before he can reach his team’s score point. And due to the fact the maps are small/medium in size; catching up to a flag carrier is usually an easy task. Some of the maps have shortcuts and other little tricks to try and allow you to loose you pursuer.

All in all, I have to say Sauerbraten instaCTF is quite addictive, I’ve found myself playing it at least a couple of hours each week since downloading. Which is good considering this is a free game and is trying to compete for my time with bigger titles like Left4Dead and GoW2.

So again, head over to http://sauerbraten.org/ to download. Anyone played before? What are your thoughts on instaCTF or the game in general?..
