Why I've given up on Wii
XYU | 1:33 PM on 05.13.2008 23 comments

It honestly makes me sad to say, but I feel I have officially given up on Wii. But I am no where near giving up on the DS or Nintendo, not by far.

I've always loved Nintendo, even though I never actually owned a NES or a SNES as a kid (because my parents choose to buy me a Master System then a Mega Drive on Christmas) But a few neighbours and friends had them when I was growing up. One Christmas my brother got an N64, I got a Dreamcast.

I ragged the shit out of that N64 playing Maio64, Golden eye, perfect Dark, Super Smash Bros, OoT, Majoras mask.....Basically I loved it, as for the dreamcast...Uhh, not so much..i owned it for about 2 months. Then we got a gamecube each and I loved that even more. I spent so much money on that thing and still think it was the best console of its generation.

When I first bought the Wii, my imagination was going crazy thinking about the kind of games Nintendo would release on this holy beast, the possibilities seemed endless. I knew the console itself was much less powerful than either of its competitors. But my faith in Nintendo was strong.

But what I felt we got was far far less than what I expected. The whole “I'm sick of seeing Mario in the same fucking games for the last 20years” thing doesn't even come into it, and I know Nintendo are making a shit load of cash from its newest console.

I guess one of the reasons I feel I'm giving up on the Wii is the lack of the top games from years past...if that makes sense...I mean, will we be seeing Resident evil 5 on Wii? Soul calibur 4? MGS4? I'm talking about the top tier games. These are games that we all know and love.... We KNOW they are going to be awesome, before they are even released.

The gamecube had awesome games including Res4, MGS, Soul Calibur 2 and many others. I realise the Wii has resident evil 4, but see my next point about that. Instead the Wii gets games like soul calibur legends and other half assed, toned down versions of games and PS2 ports with Wii controls slapped on.

But when it comes down to it, the main reason the Wii just doesn't set in stone with me as an awesome console, are the controls. Yeah they are fun, new, fresh, innovative But its just not the same. Not the same as holding a controller in your hand, where your thumbs can freely move to any button quickly. Also, precision is a major issue for me the on the Wii,...Can you honestly tell me the wii remote is just as precise as say, an xbox or playstation controller?

The fate of my Wii remains unknown, even to me. I could sell it, but its an import...may be hard to sell. Or maybe I might hold on to it for a few more months and see how it goes...

I'm not biased in any way. I play the shit out of my 360 and DS. And like I said earlier, I have no where near given up on the DS or Nintendo, not by far.

One might suggest checking out Lost Winds and FFCC:MLAAK on WiiWare, and playing Metroid Prime3 and No More Heroes (if you haven't already) before making a permanent decision.

Others might say-

Everyone has their own opinion, obviously, but I think you're just looking at the big hitters in general on this current generation. There are plenty of Grade A titles for the Wii that have gone under the radar, and I'm willing to bet you just haven't given them a chance.

Sure, MGS4 looks pretty and Resident Evil 5 will play great, but have you played Umbrella Chronicles? Have you played No More Heroes? Endless Ocean? All negative feelings aside, give some of these games a chance. The Wii is unique with it's lineup. I think if you just look a little bit for yourself you'll find that the Wii is just as great as it's hyped up to be.

The Wii has a ton of good games --- The hard part is wading through all the shit that's on the system to get to the real gems.

And I'll make a prediction here --- I'll bet we do one day see a Wii version of Resident Evil 5. 4 worked so well on the Wii --- Much better than any other version --- And I'll bet they port it sometime. Sure, it won't look as good, but if the controls remain the same as 4, I'll pick it up just for that.

Are you European and imported US Wii or US and imported Japanese Wii?

Have you played No More Heroes or Zach & Wiki? RE: Umbrella Chronicles?

I agree, in the sense that I really dont like motion controls. If given the option to use a controller, I take it every time

I say imported, I live in Wales and its actually from Germany. I had to get it from there because i just couldn't get one here. No i haven't played No More Heroes...Zach and Wiki doesn't turn me on so i haven't checked it out yet. I liked umbrella chronicles though.

I loved SSB an Melee, but Brawl isnt out here in the UK yet. One of the main reasons i bought my Wii was for Brawl, but the wait has been sooo long i guess i kinda just gave up. Its out next month and i'll probably still have my Wii then...Maybe i should start investing more into my Wii...

If you got the Wii for Brawl and give up on it the MONTH before it comes out...cmon, really? So all that was in vain. Fo' shame!

I was going to make fun of you for writing a year-old blog, but I sadly agree. Wii is now my console for something that sounds new and different, like Boom Blox. But when I want a game, something that has evolved and been refined through 20+ years and several generations of home consoles, I don't reach for the Wiimote.

This is totally what happens with Nintendo consoles. You can count on Nintendo to publish awesome games for its consoles, and 3rd party developers will never be as consistent in making quality games as Nintendo.
No More Heroes is great! Brawl is the same Super Smash Bros. game we have been playing since 1999.
If you own a Wii and you'd rather be playing the goods on the 360 and PS3, then get the other console! The Wii is going to offer you a different play experience than the other consoles, then switch! Hopefully, it will send a message to Nintendo to CREATE A NEW ORIGINAL IP!!

Things are changing on the Wii front, WiiWare especially is bringing in a lot of new and interesting ideas and third parties are starting to see how the motion controls can be used beyond the waggle.

Stick with the Wii, things are starting to turn around.

I kinda go up and down with Nintendo consoles, loved both the nes/snes. I got a 64 and really didnt care for most of the games so I went with the PS1. Then I was all over the GC, until the games started to slow, but my roommate at the time had a PS2 so all was good.

But with new consoles I went with the 360, I was torn between that and the PS3. But in the end there was just more games I wanted for the 360. As far as the Wii, it was never an option I just never liked the motion controls.

The most important point in this blog is about the precision (or lack thereof) of the WiiMote. I can't tell you how many times I've done the required motion (even in a game like Bully) and it has just not registered. More sensitive motion controls (and a bit of dead reckoning) would make the Wii deserving of the sales it is getting. Why does every Nintendo game have 10x the precision of third party games?

Let's just say that I'll never be able to play Baroque with a standard controller, ever. And it's a PS2 port, so it was built with the PS2 controller in mind! The Wii Remote controls are so much better and more comfortable it isn't even funny.

Honestly, I like Metroid Prime 3's controls as an FPS over any game on the 360/PS3 that I've played. Much more precise than those lame analog sticks.

And yeah, you're right about the Wii not getting as many 'top-tier' releases, mainly because the Wii isn't High-Def. A LOT of people (myself kind of included) see this as a downside to the console's lasting power. However, if you look at the system specs from last generation, the PS2 was the weakest, and it probably had the most sales(don't quote me, I didn't look up the sales for a fucking comment on a blog, but I'm pretty sure this is true, as who DOESN'T own a PS2?)

Anyway, my point is, it's still relatively early on in the console generation, and there's time for the Wii to get some more good titles out. If you feel that the games coming out on WiiWare, Virtual Console, or the Wii itself aren't for you, then that's great, spend your money somewhere else, intelligent gamers won't care. I, personally, can't wait for some things to change about the Wii, but I can deal with them, as I'm broke, and can't afford one of the 'current-gen' consoles.

Put it like this:

My PS2, 360, Dreamcast are upstairs. Both Wiis i have (mine and my dads.) are downstairs.

I'm hardly downstairs. I'm always upstairs. It used to be downstairs cause the only other HDTV that wasn't my parents was downstairs. Now that I have my own, it's like...there. Brawl doesn't make me want to play. I haven't even finished Zelda, Metroid, and Galaxy yet. I think I just get tired of having to hold the wiimote for said games after awhile.

It has the potential to be a good system...just not great. Plus until Nintendo get rid of Friend Codes and get with the program, Internet rapes Nintndo consoles/handhelds.

At least someone else out there like the Gamecube. I don't know about best system of the gen, but I damn did enjoy it. Best Smash Brothers period in my mind.

The Wii is still gimmicky for me. I use it most when friends are over, but it's not a hardcore console like my 360 for me.
