Warner Bros and Fox settle Watchmen dispute
XYU | 2:33 AM on 01.16.2009 10 comments

Given the recent circumstances surrounding the watchmen film, a lot of fans feared that the film they have been waiting so long to see will never reach the light of day.

Well Watchmen fans can now rejoice, because according to the Hollywood reporter a settlement has been made between Fox and Warner Bros.

Warner Bros. and Fox have resolved their dispute over Watchmen, with the studios scheduled to present the settlement to Judge Gary Feess on Friday morning and request that the case be dismissed. Terms of the agreement will not be disclosed, but it is said to involve a sizable cash payment to Fox and a percentage of the film’s box office.

Being a huge fan of the original graphic novel this is great news. I am aware that not really many people have actually read Watchmen, but never the less, even if you haven’t read the graphic novel you can’t deny that Watchmen looks set to be one of the most stylish, ass kicking films of 2009.

How does this news sit with Dtoiders? Are you as relieved as I am? Do you even care?

Your thoughts, give them to me.

I'll be happy, so long as it doesn't reek of failure. I've got my fingers crossed, but there's so much material to boil down into a single film. I don't know how well it could possibly be handled.

I'm going to go with "cautiously optimistic" on this one. Kevin Smith gushed over it at comic con so I'm glad it'll at least see the light of day in a timely fashion.

You know that producer got chewed out. I heard some movie dude say if WB had secured the disputed rights before production it would have been around 5 million, I'm guessing they payed much more than that.

I'm glad the mess is being fixed but I'm worried about the quality of the film. The graphic novel is not the sort of material that most big Hollywood comic book movies are made of. That worries me. Snyder's 300 wasn't so good either. It wasn't enough to just translate the work; he had to make it more extreme with the big mutant that almost kills Leonidas and the rhino riders from Lord of the Rings. If Snyder stays true to the comic, the movie will be thought provoking and more about the dialog than the action. I wonder if he's up for at sort of film.

I no longer have the direct quote, and I know some dtoiders are reading the book right now, so this will be pretty mangled: Alan Moore had a look at one of the scripts (I believe the one written by Hayter) and said that the feeling and moral ambiguity had been preserved, not that any movie can properly capture a graphic novel, but it wasn't a travesty. People shouldn't care whether or not theres a _____ at the end.

I'm pretty optimistic about it.

Good news indeed. I'll be honest I had never even heard of the comic until after I saw the trailer. I went and read it, loved it, and was mad I didn't find it sooner. Lets just hope that the early priase from Kevin Smith and a few others that have seen it holds up and this movie kicks ass.
